Happened to me a few times now in FW, used to have no trouble with these in a Nano Stabber or Frig, but as of late I have been getting caught and killed.
Basically I jump through, realise its a pirate gate camp. Take a breather, check out what ships there are and where they are before I decloak. Get ready to head in a direction that will take me away from the blob.
Decloak, more or less head straight, hit MWD, overheat it, so I get it in the next cycle if they give chase, turn on my DC for any hits. I usually MWD away to a good safe distance and warp. But lately when Im starting to build up speed 'wham' MWD dies. Ive been scrammed. Soon Im dead.
I'm not trying to warp from the decloak because usually the campers are Sensor boosted up to the Wa-Zoo. So Im trying to figure out what it could be.
However in all cases there has been those recons Arazu & Lachesis in the mix.
Would I be dealing with some Faction Scram, thats been bonus'd out for range?
BTW the ships that I fly have an align time of 5 sec in EFT.

Maybe they poured their learning skills SP into Recon 5 and just have the scram overheated, no ganglinks or faction bonuses required. |

a faction scram, overheated on a lvl 5 recon arazu / lach with fleet bonuses applied will easily reach out beyond 30km (don't know exact distance off the top of my head, maybe nearer 40)
any decent gate camp will have such a set up, ur better off waiting for ur session change and burning back for the gate than trying to burn away from such a camp. Don't believe the hype! |

I noticed that t3 with sensor subsystem and some remote sensor boosting can get to 2000 scan res without difficulty, and also have strong tank for the gate guns.
Such t3 camps can capture even interceptors. It's possible that CCP optimized some code that reduced the minimum time necessary for server-client to exchange all the messages between overview updating and scrambler activating

Edited by: Vim on 16/02/2011 11:43:43 As been said, proper gatecampers will have skirmish bonuses and with a zuzu/lach on gate: 37km scramrange. Don't expect to get away from that very easily. It is also possible that thanks to the actualy optimizations ccp are doing we are getting smoother gameplay resulting in previous 'zumzum iam gone just as you get a lock meepmeep' now rendering you 'zumzum, wtf scrammed'
Reapproach gate might be a better option =) Also, with targets slipping away from them. Dont expect pies to evolve and do their best to enhance their setups to snag things. Leaves you with cloaking tengus/t3s that is near impossible to snag in lowsec/null that can go about their business relatively unharmed, be it carebearing(fw missionrunning) or scouting and being a real threat. In null atleast you can use ceptors to decloak/tackle on gates. And then your looking at: 1sec, seeing the thing on overview, 1 sec: dblclicking in its direction(someone tell me theres an easier way to burn for a cloakys in space position, please), 2sec get to its position. =3.5-4secs, at this point in time most cloaky cruisers will be in warp.

There are loads of reasons why gate camps today are pretty hard to get by. You have the typical Loki t3 booster, T3's such as the Proteus that have the capability to be set up for almost insta scam. Not to mention the addition of sm,med rigs that made it affordable to fit scan speed rigs to pretty much any ship.
This all ends up with today's EVE where arti fit BS's or even BC's have the ability to insta lock frigs including fast aligning ceptors if you get just a slight amount of lag and often times even with out it.
Meaning if a frig can get popped by these camps, a nano Stabber isn't gonna have much luck. Today's EVE pretty much require a cloaked scout alt in highly populated low sec even if you just want to solo in a frig.

People tend to catch on to the latest trends. What good is fishing for targets if you're gonna have even the tiniest fraction of them get away? It's this kind of logic that seems to prevail nowadays.
That's why I never travel through lowsec in anything but a covops cloak fitted ship.
These camps are also pretty stable. If the pirates feel comfortable with the system, they'll be there for days on end.
Might I suggest the bait Dominix navy issue, with more than 100k in hull ehp?You know, the kind bristling with nasty e-war, especially neuts. Also, some friends. And an alt. See? pvp is easy if you come prepared

Edited by: Vihura on 16/02/2011 15:34:40 "I fly have an align time of 5 sec in EFT" This is tooo long and if you turn on MWD it will increse, my ship have 2.8s align time and is in warp before cloack animation disappear.(Set travel on the map an jum, warp, jump, warp dont wait you give them time to react. SSD HDD help a lot too :)

Approach a cloaker accurately = Double click holding CTRL in your overview. If he cloaks quickly though you are pretty much screwed. ---

-Load grid and notice the gate camp -Wait out the session timer -Align to the gate you just jumped through -Hit MWD or AB -Jump trough
This is almost certain to get you out safely in a frigate. Same goes for an agile cruiser unless they are very skilled at bumping/happen to have a ship along your path back to the gate.

All this advice on dodging and escaping gate camps is all well and good, but if you come across a competent gang with tech 3 insta lockers then you are pretty much f*****.
You will be scrammed and webbed instantly unless you are in a covops. Your only hope of escaping is slowboating back to the gate but that goes out the window if you have low ehp, then you explode.
Best bit is a cloaky scout so you can avoid the camps, also these sort of camps are usually on the same gates and done by the same group of people regularly so make a note of it. I know that you can't always have a scout with you, but that's your best option to avoid it.

If there is a Lachesis and a Huginn on the gate you're better off burning back to jump out. Attempts to run do give us a chuckle though. So please, think of the pirates. And our need for chuckles.

My alt's arazu with recon 5 and no ganglinks reaches to 25km overloaded (faction scram), it's 30km+ with a ganglink. I think what you've noticed is people are just getting better at the game. Sure new players are always coming in and old ones leaving. But those old ones often pass on their experience prior to doing so. So the tactics of the game are constantly evolving.
When I first took up piracy way back in december of 08, things like RR, ganglinks and remote sebo's were virtually unheard of in piracy. It was just a hodgepodge of BS's with a new guy in a sebo'd BC for tackle. Now it's BS's for dps, 3-4 guardians/basilisks and a remote sebo'd tackle ship like a lachesis or ashimmu. The CS/T3/guardian gang is also becoming very popular for roaming. They maybe lower dps but the resistance allows them to take on seemingly much more powerful gangs by making their RR more effective.
Thus far you shall read, but no further; for this is my sig. |

Typically there are only a few pirate camps around lowsec, and they're almost always concentrated in just a few systems with a lot of traffic (for example Rancer). It takes a little while to setup a proper camp like that and it's not exactly the most mobile of fleet compositions, so usually the pirates will hang around in one system for a few hours until a gang forces them to dock.
Easiest thing to do is to just check dotlan for recent killmails or just avoid the notorious systems altogether. If you're extra paranoid then just throw a noob alt through the system you're worried about to check it out.
