i know that sentries wont hit close fast moving targets but will they hit the close non moving ones. for example if i'm in a battleship and we are 10kilometers away and i pop out sentries to fight another battle ship neither of us are moving alot so will the sentries be as effective in that situation.

You can throw the numbers directly into the normal tracking formula to check but there is a DPS graph in EFT that will do this for you.
At 10km you should be ok but any closer and I would personally switch to heavies.
I find sentries work well over 20 km, especially if you can load up your mids with omni's and TPs.
Some tips: - At close range try to user Garde II. All the other's tracking is too slow - If at all possible fit at least on Omnidirectional Tracking Link in your mids - Against smaller targets try a target painter or another omni. - Sentry tracking can be tested in EFT.
Edit: Here is a graph for Garde II against BS / BC sized targets at max traversal (without AB). Note the Drake, with it's shield bloom, will soak up more damage than the armor Myrm.

When it comes to pve you can basically nail anything that moves against you outside the 10-14km barrier. You will hit frigates, because they don't orbit at that range (so they are flying straight at you with no transversal). Cruisers can be hit even with transversal when you have omni's and skills (also right drones). Battleships are can be hit too, but I've had some problems with Angelships (if i'm not mistaken) orbiting too close. You need heavies for them.
If you can drop them before they enter the 15km (or so) barrier you should be able to hit anything. Usually I have one or two BS that slip through in big missions, but everything else can be dropped before they enter the barrier.
I used a sentryrigged domi with 2x omnis. Could be fun to try and get more gank with painters though...could become a bit scary though...

What iŠve found out about sentries - heavies:
Domi: 1 x Drone Link Augmentor, 2 x Omnidirectional, 2 x Sentrie Damage Rig
With good drone skills even Warden II one-shot frigs at distance when they burn in without transversal. When stuff comes in nearer (50km) i switch to Garde II.
When stuff comes close (-15km) i switch to proper drones (light-med-heavies).
In some of the mission where everything spawns on top of you, i leave my sentries at home, switch the omidirectionals for drone nav comp, and kill BS with heavies.

the short story is that i'm heading toward the armegedon. i hate ammo and that's the best bs for that M.O. trying to go with level 4 missions soon. the way the gedon is set up the drones can make a considerable contribution to damage. but the best damage would be drones. other wise with 5 small and 5 mediums your left with 50 m3 of drone space left over. ?? it just doesnt make sence to not use the best dammage but of course the small guys can give you problems
