Hi, I was after some advice... Been playing a few weeks now with a few characters to get used to the game... Now it's time to start my "real" Game/Character and was wondering what advice you guys could give - pros and cons of a race for a developing new player.
Many thanks.

It really doesn't matter what race/bloodline/gender you choose. All of their stats are [more or less] the same and the starting skills are so basic that they are almost negligible (i.e. you can pretty much cross train to any other racial ship or weapon in a matter of hours).
The whole "racial" thing is mostly 'fluff' these days. _______________________

Race really doesn't matter other than how you look. Pick the race you like the looks of most.

Pick Caldari for PvE or Amarr/Minmatar for PvP, any for industrials.

Pick one you like the looks of because nothing else matters these days really.

The only place it would really matter a lot is if you were into Role Playing. All the back story stuff, bloodlines etc. only matter now if they're important to the history you're creating for the character you want to play. If you like role playing, there are several role playing Player Corporations. Just look at their recruiting, talk to some of their people and see what kind of stuff they're into. If you're not into role playing - none of that matters.
There may or may not also be a convention that people in Factional Warfare are from the side they're fighting for but there are no rules preventing anyone from fighting for anybody. Caldari can join the Gallente militia and vice versa - you just need to get their standings high enough to join.
Most player corporations don't really care. Their CEO has to train Racial Relations but if he wants people from outside his faction to join - then he's probably already done that. It's not that hard.
What really counts is what you do.
If you start doing things that hurt your standings with a particular faction you can find yourself having a problem entering their space without being attacked by their NPC's ... but that is a deliberate choice on your part.
As to ships - you start off with Your Faction Frigate at Level II - which you can train for any other faction in a few minutes - same thing with their basic gun.
So - if you like the looks of one particular character type and the ships of another - no problem.
If you want to set up shop in any factions space - no one cares. You'll see more characters from the faction owning that space in it - but that's just because they started out in that area and didn't leave. If you want to leave the space you start out in you can go anywhere - as long as you haven't run a bunch of missions where you killed ships from that faction and lowered your standings with it. The only things that really matter about traveling to other areas of EVE space - is the security level there - which has nothing to do with which faction owns it.
As far as it goes ... you might just as well use the characters you've already trained some skill points for - unless there's something about them you really don't like.
One thing to think about ... is which sex you want your character to be. Most people understand that the vast majority of MMO players are male and tend to assume that anyone they meet is male IRL until proven otherwise. But there are sometimes subtle differences in the way you'll be treated in game based on the sex of your character. I wouldn't want to over emphasize that though.
I made this character my forum alt ... because I am a male and wanted to represent myself as such. Posting with female characters caused some ambiguity I didn't see a need for.

Pick gallente because we're the EU.
Or the Amarr because they're the Holy Roman Empire.
Or the Caldari because they're military-run imperial Japan.
Or Minmatar because you're a big Robert Howard fan and/or can't keep your fantasy and scifi straight.
Then train whatever you want, because, as mentioned, your race makes a difference so minor it's basically zero. I was tempted to say something about starting zones and probable factions, but you can go anywhere in high in a starter ship without anyone touching you, and once you've finished the Sisters of Eve questline you're right at the border of all four spaces. ---
