It is on the market, there's no way to know who place it :)
You can tell who you buy things to, and who you sold to.
As the buy order fail you don't have a way to be sure who is the scammer.
You can get a probable culprit if you have brought the stuff to fulfill the order in the same station at an inflated price, as probably the seller is the same guy that has put up the buy order. But in Jita? Good luck finding him.
BTW it is not a good idea setting up this scam in Jita, you risk being underbid on the selling part by some random trader.

Yes, it's a scam. Yes it sucks. Yes, it's more sophisticated than saying "duhr, buy my 1 trit for 3 billion isk." But yes, it's really freakin' easy to avoid. Maybe start reading the news when you log in and you won't be surprised when you get screwed.
*edit, waiting for CCP to delete chunks of your wall of text as posting GM correspondence is against the forums rules.
Well you're quite the Queen Troll, wish peeps like you would just climb back into their dirty little holes and die. Maybe next time you, as well as the other trolls, might try posting a reply that's more constructive and adds useful information pertaining to the topic of the original post.
I have been playing this game for over 2 1/2 years and didn't know about this type of scam. Thanks to the OP for posting about it, now I know.
There have been threads about this scam in the fist page of the GD and Market forums almost every day for months, the OP could simply have resurrected one instead of starting a new one.

Quote: Edited by: Pinifarina on 17/02/2011 03:55:36 **********MARGIN TRADING RELATED, if you already know about it don't read.**************
Well before i tell you the exploit I will tell you how i came across it. I was like usually selling my loot in Jita market, and one of my items had a buy order for more than half a million than normal price.. but with a minimal order a little high. So, because I was needing something to do, and REALLY needing the ISKies, i went to several market hubs to buy, best market prices available, of the item. After around 2-3 hours around gathering the huge amount of items necessary, i finally went back to Jita to sell them and after "parking" my ship and verifying that the order was still there, i tryed to execute the sale. Surprisingly the order disappear when i click on the yes button. After a few hours i checked the market sales, i verified that no order was made at the high price of the buy order, so noone had made the sale before me, so the only solution was that the player buying remove the order in the exact moment i place the items for sale. Strange, but could happen, so i petition it to see what it was. Some days after i saw again one item with a high price, high volume buy order, but this time the price was so high that it was screaming scam!! So i did petition it again, but this time as a bug report and exploit. The answer to the petition was that there was no way to check the buy order, and then there was no way to check it's veracity. Amazingly i got another buy order scam in market, and so this time I screen shot it and attach it to the petition. Now they have the prove they wanted. And after thinking a little bit i figure that one way of doing it was using the attribute of the margin trade skill. I explain to the GM my theory, and after he confirm it he said it is a game feature!!!???
So here is the big juice, I monitored prices for the item and the price raise in all major hubs and it raised more than 2M from normal price, and also buy orders place by normal players raise more than 1M. Now price is under normal market price (because people like me that were try to gather the items necessary for the buy order just want to get rid of them), so here's the trick, you get an alt and train margin trade, then you check some items you got and want to sell for a better price, you place a buy order for minimal quantity high (remember that you still have to have the necessary money for the order in the moment of the order placing) and for a price a little bit higher (1 or 2M). After you place the order, you still have some money (due to margin trade skill) and immediately transfer it to another char. now you have a buy order that needs more money than you got :) so when someone trys to sell the order simply disappear (the downside is that because you didn't had the money at the time of the sale you get a 10% fine). Now you just place another buy order higher than the last and place your items at sale in the same station (verify that the profit can pay both fines of 10% and still give you some profit). After some days you can check that prices in the items drop a LOT, so now it's the time to buy, buy a big lot. Wait some more days to the prices get to normal again and do it over again.
good luck and good profits

The skill is exceptionally useful for normal traders. If you just station trade its not all that special. But if you put out many buy orders either at different stations or using regional buy orders its vital.
My total buy orders almost always exceeds my wallet. But I never have come close to not being able to cover an order that someone is trying to fill.

This is my scam. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My scam is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My scam, without me, is useless. Without my scam, I am useless. I must execute my scam true. I must scam harder than Barbie who is trying to scam me. I must scam him before he scams me. I will.
My scam and myself know that what counts in Eve is not the laughs we laugh, the forum rage of traders, nor the ISK we make. We know that it is the tears that count. We will make them cry.
Before God, I swear this creed. My scam and myself are the defenders of what is dirty and evil in Eve. We are the masters of traders. We are the bane of industrials. So be it, until the market is ours!

If anything in your post was true, you'd have a point. But it's not, and you don't.
You should probably bone up the incident, and the repercussions from the incident, before you start using it as an example.
More to the point it was a case of a CCP employee abusing his previleges, not an exploit (a flaw in the game mechanics that can be taken advantage of). ===== The world will not end in 2012, however there will be a serious nerf to Planetary Interaction. |

Ah, really, I was playing when it happened. What part of that wasnt true? T20 didnt spawn t2 BPOs for BoB? T20 did get fired after all? BoB didnt know T20 was a dev (Ive seen and heard it in chatlogs, pretend they didnt know. PLEASE)? When the BPOs were removed, CCP removed all the isk that was gained through their use? The items created by them? The BPCs of them? What part wasnt true? I said it before, I'll say it again. Read The News. A few months ago there was a full report explaining how this scam works. It was right there on the character selection screen. There have been about a dozen posts on the forums about it already, all by other people who don't read the news or the forums. You've shown up to the party late, drunk, and unwilling to help clean up.

So, sorry for asking like a noob but.. What exactly is exploitable by doing this? Who looses money and why? Doesn't the order just cancel out, making none of them lose money / buy anything?
I can't seem to get my grip on this specific "scam"/exploit. |
