What is a blob? Is it anything more than one? I have heard it used many times for all sorts of group sized hostile or neutral pilots. I believe it is time to unoficially sort this out, as I am easily confused, and what better place than here on the forums?
There must be standardization folks. I propose we start using galactically accepted terminology henceforth to define blobs by size. This will cut down on confusion and one will immediately know the severity of impending danger. Furthermore, my fellow forum warriors, future posts can be easily identified as great capsuleer feats or epic failures depending on actions vs. accepted blob sizes.
My proposal is as follows:
Anything greater than 1 pilot that is netural or hostile should be referred to as a "blob". Depending on size, it should have different names. Here is my first attempt:
2-5 pilots - Teensy blob 5-10 pilots - Small blob 10-15 pilots - Just a blob 15-20 pilots - Uh-Oh blob 20-25 pilots - Large blob 25-30 pilots - Time to cloak or hide blob 30-50 pilots - Ridiculous blob 50+ pilots - Fleet

Edited by: Lt Angus on 17/02/2011 16:56:10 wouldnt really call anything bellow 30 a blob but of course it tends to be relational to how many ships you have vs them, say 30 ships agains 100 wouldnt be a blob but 30 against 2 might be. so standardization would end up being difference between the 2 groups :-P 30 against 2 being a 15point blob

What does it matter? its a blob, or its not a blob. No need to get fancy over something this simple.

Edited by: Durnin Stormbrow on 17/02/2011 17:37:24 IMHO, a blob is any force big enough that an individual player is insignificant to the group as a whole, and becomes nothing more than +1 to the gang.
What size that is is largely dependant on how well the force is lead and managed. A 200 man wing divided into many squads, where each pilot has a defined roll within that squad, and each squad has goals and objectives might not seem like a blob to any of its members.
OTOH, a 20 man gang with no planning, purpose, or direction won't miss the loss of a single player; to my mind, that's a blob.
Edit: "Getting blobbed" otoh, is getting crushed by any force that is much larger than yours, and has nothing to do with how either force is planned or lead.

Two definitions of a blob
Rational: **** ton of ships that's gonna kill you and who ever you are flying with no matter what you do.
Irrational: YOU HAVE 3 MORE SHIPS THAN ME YOU ****ING BLOBBERS

The term originated years ago when pirates would use the map to identify systems where groups of players were running a mining op in nullsec. The brighter the 'blob' showed up on the map, the bigger the op was.
So in answer to your question about how many people make a 'blob', it used to be anything that stood out on the map. I guess the meaning has evolved now though, with greater numbers of concurrent players and more heavily populated nullsec.

A blob is any group of pilots I lose my ship to in circumstances I do not like.
More serious answer: it's a ratio thing. "blobbing" one ship with 6 is just as legitimate a label as the 00 "blobs."

Blob: A fleet with more than one squad of which the squads are not organized into specific branches. No squad or wing has a specific role. All squads and wings listen to a single commander.
