...what was the deal with the body modder guy named "upright man"?
I dont get what was so shocking about him. The text was kinda vague about it. Is he supposed to be a cyborg or something?
I tried doing a google search but all that comes back are biblical topics unrelated to Eve.

His entire body had been replaced with another. As for the name, no idea. |

I thought it was hilarious.

All of his insides are cybernetic, except for his skin and CNS. They did the surgery through his eye sockets, to not scar him. By what I got from it there is very little left of him in there, just his brain and skin. By the way, real men biomass when they emoragequit.

Like people have noted, his body has almost completely been replaced by wetware (artificial biological implants), cyberware and/or transplants from other people. And he was not sedated during the procedure. (Though personally, I'd assume that there would have been several better openings than the eye sockets, but well.)
On the significance of the name, I assume that the title of the "Upright Man" has two hints: First, the Upright Man isn't really "sincere" about himself, because under his skin, he isn't himself any more. Second, he is the "alpha" in the body-modder community - a bit like the "Upright Man" was used as a title of a leader of beggars and thieves.

Ah, ok. I thought it was something like that.
It sounded at first like they took his brain out of his body and replaced it with an artificial brain.
