Every time I try to visit EVE Gate, I wind up sitting at my computer for like a minute browsing other sites while it tries to load. It takes a really long time. What is the cause for the long delay?

I have the same problem, Eve Gate always loads like a snail, even when my connection is good. No idea what causes it  . |

It's not the mailbox. I didn't specify mail, actually. The login is slow, selecting a character is slow. Everything past that is fairly quick. It's just the loading that takes so long.

For me, EVE Gate is slow simply because packets from my computer go around the world - from Australia, across the USA, off to Europe. Response time for a ping to the content delivery network is about 300ms on a good day with a tail wind. Seriously the packets go 3/4 of the way around the planet in each direction:

There are over fifty assets which need to be fetched, total time from starting to load the page to fully loaded is about 12 seconds in Australia.
Messed up nonsense like a background image that is a 200kB JPEG doesn't help much. That takes about 1.64s to download over my link - most of which is due to latency on the more-than-international link.

You just self-owned there. "Get a decent internet connection" and you respond with Comcast. 
Further:
/LogOn/CharacterSelection takes 12s on its own to simply respond, before the HTML is returned to the browser.
Once logged in, /Home takes 30s to respond, before any content is transferred.
After this, response time comes back to a more reasonable 1-2s.

maybe you guys should check if you have your browsercache-settings in order.
https-encryption might be slow on older machines.

The issue is response time and transit time for me. Caching only benefits the UX after the resources have been loaded at least once. Encryption is not an issue either - why would you even bring that up?
Once the resources are cached, EVE Gate will respond as quickly as the new page HTML is delivered from CCP's CDN. In Australia the ping time to these services is around 300ms, the response time of the server is about 2.5s (i.e.: from mouse-click to the first byte of content being returned from the EVE Gate services). The page is completely rendered about 250ms later.
I can go to my Internet Banking site located here in Australia and get 50ms ping times with 250ms response times, on a site that has more resources to request.
