Moved from EVE General Discussion to Ships & Modules - Jacques Archambault
Ok, what is the deal with mining barges? i have come back to Eve after a 6 month hibernation, and i have no idea what these things are for. Are there new types of mining lasers or somthing? its only got one hi-slot so whatever is fitted there it had better be good, right? Is that cheap-o one better at mining than an Osprey with 3xMiner IIs? -------------- Caldari and proud of it! |

small - mounts 1 strip miner laser medium - mounts 2 strip miner lasers large - mounts 3 strip miner lasers
Ice belts are around and the materials refined from Ice are used to power POSs (Player Owned Structures). A barge is the only ship able to mine Ice.
A large barge can mine ore faster than an Apoc with 8 miner IIs. It's a lot cheaper than a BS but has paper thin shields making it almost impossible to mine alone in (in lower sec space).
Mining normal asteroids the barges have a 3 minute cycle time. Mining Ice the barges have a 9 minute cycle time to which u can train Ice Harvesting skill to reduce that cycle by 30 seconds per level.
Oh and before you ask the strip miner lasers say they take 3000 cpu per laser, the mining barge reduces that to 60 due to a special ability. Basically it's to stop people from mounting the strip miners on any other ship. ___________________________________________ http://www.eve-tutor.com

I don't know anyone that uses a small and yes I think the osprey will out mine it although I haven't checked. ___________________________________________ http://www.eve-tutor.com

Edited by: Lidza on 30/01/2005 21:37:43 Just to help you with some numbers
Mining Pyroxeres per minute
Skills Mining 5 Astrogeology 5 Caldari cruiser 4 Mining Barge 5
Cruisers Vexor = 1200 p/m (4 mining lasers II) enough cargohold to store 1 run Thorax = 1500 p/m (5 mining lasers II) not enough cargohold to store 1 run Osprey = 1620 p/m (3 mining lasers II) enough cargohold to store 1 run
Battleships Dominix = 1800 p/m (6 mining lasers II) enough cargohold to store 1 run Armageddon = 2100 p/m (7 mining lasers II) enough cargohold to store 1 run Apocalypse = 2400 p/m (8 mining lasers II) enough cargohold to store 1 run
Mining Barges Retriever = 6206 p/3 minutes (2068 p/m) (2 strip mining lasers) enough cargohold to store 1 run Covetor = 9702 p/3 minutes (3234 p/m) (3 strip mining lasers) enough to store 1 run
Notes No drones were used
* also I'll need to update all other ships with exception of Covetor because only now I've got astrogeology 5 ... so all others numbers are with astro 4 and not astro 5
However the large barge beat all the rest even without mining strip II neither crystals.
So if u are at cruiser level keep Osprey or other Minmatar cruiser also good for mining... until u get a BS with 7 mining lasers... then Apoc with 8 and only then Large barge
All other barges are a wast of ISK and time coz BS with 7 mining lasers are better than medium barge (the only exception is... if u want to mine ICE then invest in small/medium barge... if u cannot use the large one). So play to large barge instead...

also dont forget stirp miner II's with the apropreat crystals that will prolly make mining barges alot more worth it

Medium barges are worth it. They are way way way cheaper than a BS, and I personaly don't plan on moving up to BS for a while, it would take a long ass time to do so anyways

Don't get a large one if you lag out in 0.5.
*Cries over local and partial hull expanders and a strip miner oh and an uninsured Covetor*
time to get in my frigate and raise some hell

True but...
Due to its price (over 30m per unit) and without ore type crystals (since it seem that they were not introduced into the game yet)... seem atm more than useless

My only question is...
Since Barges are so easy to be taken down by a single frigate and due to their useless number of slots that doesnt give much choice of setups.
Who manage to survive in a Barge mining in 0.0 systems?

Barges are not meant to be solo defendable, they are purely roid eaters. If you want to use a barge in a low security area, then you will need to be a member of a group, they are the equivalent of a shovel, not an m16.

if you are mining low sec minerals like arkonor the med barge is just as good as an apoc with 8 lasers as strip miners get no penalty vs. low sec ore types, miner2s do....
