Edited by: Kronus Heilgar on 23/02/2011 03:24:19 Hello Eve,
I just wanted to ask if anyone has any ideas for new tools, games, or services that people might want for EVE. I'm a computer scientist, currently in grad school, with extensive experience in databases and web/application coding, and a bit of practice with the API (although could pick it all up pretty quickly), so I have the skillset to build pretty much anything that you might want.
Ideas for services that could generate some revenue would be nice, but if there's a tool that the EVE community could use that hasn't been done yet I'd be more than willing to give it a shot.

SMS alerts for corp/alliance pilots to subscribe to.
Most phones have the ability to receive messages via an email, such as [email protected] or [email protected] (replace obviously faked phone numbers of course). Now this to me seems like a great way to alert pilots to a CTA, home defense op, etc. The problem with that though is two fold.
1) People don't want to hand out their phone numbers to anyone in EvE (and who can blame them with spies around). 2) Mass mailing a ****-ton of cell phones would be a pain in the ass.
So you have a program where your pilots can sign up for it, perhaps using an API key to validate their part of the alliance/corp in question. They enter their cell provider and cell number, and the program securely stores this (they key is securely, idealy not even someone having admin access to the database would be able to see plain text numbers). Then they subscribe to lists, ex, Cap Pilots, XXX Corp, CEO's, etc.
Now people can send messages to these lists, best if only certain people have access to things, for example, a CEO could send messages to corp members but not the entire alliance. FC's could send messages to combat pilots, only alliance CEO/Directors, and maybe head FC could message everyone. You get the idea, everyone gets subscribed to one or more lists, and everyone gets a role which limits their power. The more customizable this portion is the better.
If suddenly an system comes under attack the FC can quickly call all available forces. If a CEO is having a meeting he can alert everyone, "Be online in 10 mins for corp meeting if you can", etc.
While I'm adding more and more options on top of this program, another great security measure would be to set times when you -don't- want to receive messages. Ex. for me would be between 12:00am and 8:00am GMT -5 (5:00 to 13:00 eve time). Also a spam prevention measure, so you can't send more than one message every 5 minutes to any particular list. Limit message size to whatever the text message character limit is (160 characters I think?)
I'm sure there's a few private tools out there, or maybe supercap pilots trading phone numbers out of necessity, but I haven't seen anything organized, open, or most importantly, secure.

I'll go ahead and toss another one out there :P This one is less web/database and more application programming. IMO the best mapping program in Eve is GARPA Topographical Survey but AFAIK the developer quit some time ago and it hasn't been improved since. Not that it's broken, but one of these days the API will change and it will be.
In the mean time there are still several improvements I can think that could be made. For example, in EVEMap if you check "show jumprange" and hover over a system, all systems that you can jump to light up, this would be a nice addition to GTS. A better import method would be nice too, building a current list of jump bridges for a large alliance and it's allies is rather tedious in XML, and if you get a system name wrong it crashes. If you could build it in the program and then click export that would be awesome.
Lets see... The ability to enter your own API and get standings (can you even do that?) or just enter allies/hostile alliances in the program so it will display what space is red/blue to you (similar to the tile overlay in the eve client map).
I've never been partial to the 3D map, but some people might like it. Once alternative that would be nice is if you could have a map like GTS but layed out according to Dotlan style (not even sure if that would fit together right with the whole universe), but Dotlan really allows you to see where pipes and deadends are, a lot of pilots are more familiar with that these days. Plotting jump routes to go by station systems would be a plus.

Like eft for it so people could play around when not near the internet, then mabye load it up to battleclinic that might make you a few bucks. Stick with i-apps and make em like a buck a peice, make 4 good ones and that $4 per person. They gotta be good to get the people tho, i like the EFT idea tho, I was thinkin bout doin it but idk how to do that tho.
Good luck with whatever you do! Fly safe

Make an app that will run in connection with a fleet where fleet members enter their mid-slot items (Warp Scrams, ewar, Target painters, etc) that displays this information for a fleet commander to review. People would pay you a lot of isk for that. Or at least I would.

It would be useful if corp leaders could generate ship skill profiles from their members. Parse character skill sheets and give profiles that match configured ship skill templates such as 'drake basic named t1', 'drake t2 shield tank, t1 launchers', etc. Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. ~Saint |

I have seen small flashplayer-windows inside internet-pages where it is possible to play trial-versions of downloadable games. Why not make a front-end where it is possible to play without downloading the game. Of course there will be a problem with passwords etc, so it might be solution for CCP inside Evegate somewhere, perhaps. Im a sailor working in a cruise ship, and we do have pc-clients for the crew like in a netcafe, but it is not possible to install any programs without permission from administrator. Some of the ships do have wireless connection, and it is possible to connect a laptop. Anyone else feeling for this? May be put the wish in a ped? The most interesting is a way to change skill-training when away for long time, normally I start some longer skills, but... ...perhaps not.

pretty easy one, but I would wait for the new headers. Those will show you what ship your members are in so you can find out how many midslots there are.

Even with the new headers this wont be possible. You would still require some api input.

With the ingame Standings display nerf, I was wondering if someone could make a standalone program for viewing member standings using Limited API keys. EVEHQ's is broken (until V2.x). __________________________________________________________

I'd like to see an office finder. You could search by region, constellation or system name and sort the results by rent rate, location, system security and availability. This would save CEO's and directors a lot of time and isks. It might even be nice to list available moons or tag alliance POS's that might be present in the area you're trying to settle in. -------------------------------------------- Armor is the b*tch that's hard to take down. Beams are the hot b*tch that'll take you down hard. |

ive actually been working on that as an addon for my application a few weeks ago but due lack of motivation to write all the stuff myself and time i kinds put it on hold but if someone really wants it i guess i can continue to work on it, a screenie from the app can be found here: http://www.evefleet.com/EveFleet_2011_03_10_wip.png
