Edited by: Silver Night on 27/02/2011 20:12:12 Silver's Second Annual Fiction Contest
The Contest: Just write a short piece of Eve fiction. The contest will run 3 weeks from the time of this post. Submit a link to your story in this thread. Winners will be picked by me at the end of the submission period.
The Prizes: 1st Prize: Winner's choice of any one of the following faction battleships, with a 300m fitting stipend. Choices are: Bhaalgorn, Vindicator, Rattlesnake, Machariel, Nightmare, Raven Navy Issue, Tempest Fleet Issue, Apocalypse Navy Issue, Megathron Navy Issue, Dominix Navy Issue, Typhoon Fleet Issue, Armageddon Navy Issue, or Scorpion Navy Issue.
2nd Prize: Choice of any one of the Navy Issue or Fleet Issue battleships listed above. There will be 2 second prize winners.
3rd Prize: Choice of Empire Faction Cruisers from the following list: Caracal Navy Issue, Omen Navy Issue, Vexor Navy Issue, or Stabber Navy Issue. There will be 4 3rd place winners.
That is seven chances to win.
The Rules:
- Stories should be no more than 3000 words. This year this rule will be strictly enforced, as there were over 100 entries last year.
- One entry per person.
- New (previously unpublished) fiction only.
- Fiction must be set in the Eve universe.
- Stories cannot include your character (the one you play the game with).
- Stories cannot center around a pod pilot. They can be mentioned, or involved, but your protagonist(s) should not be one.
- Story needs to be within the bounds of Eve PF (Canon). If you aren't sure about something, I suggest asking - the 'OOC' channel in-game would be a good place to start. If you aren't familiar with the PF, there is plenty on this site in the backstory section. Tip: Due to my personal preferences I would suggest not leaning heavily on anything from the TEA Eve novel.
- Please post a link to your story in this thread, but not the full story. A short 'teaser' is okay. Post the body of the story elsewhere: It's own thread on this forum is fine. I can also recommend Blogger or Backstage. You can post it elsewhere, but I may decline to click on links I find shady. Get in touch via eve-mail if you have an issue with where to post.
- All decisions by me in regards to the contest are final. There is no appeal. Don't feel I've been fair to you? I will try to be fair, but in the end, Eve isn't fair. Value it as a learning experience.
- Contest will run for 3 weeks, starting at the time stamp on this post.
- Rules subject to change.
- Prizes will be contracted in Jita in the week following the close of the contest. Contracts will be set to two weeks, assigned to the character who submitted the story. I know, Jita. Deal with it.
Misc:
Judging the entries may take up to a couple weeks, depending on volume. Thank you in advance for your patience.
Stories that stand out may also get their own special prizes.
Finally, feel free to check out last year's competition.

I was thinking about entering...because I haven't written fiction in a long time and wanted to see if I still had the desire, but I'm turned off by one thing.
"Stories cannot center around a pod pilot. They can be mentioned, or involved, but your protagonist(s) should not be one."
What is the purpose of telling people what they can/can't write about?

I feel that Eve is an extremely rich setting. I mean, there are hundreds or perhaps thousands of populated worlds, plus stations, habitable moons, asteroid bases, etc.
That rule is to encourage people to look at those parts of the game that are outside the pod, as it were.
You are obviously free to enter or not as you choose, but it's my hope that people will explore bits of the world of Eve that they might not have considered before. --------------

I agree with you about the richness of what Eve has to offer, but I disagree on limited a writers options on what they would like to write about. It's completely possible to include any of what you mentioned while centering the story on the pod pilot.
Pod Pilots are the center of Eve, taking them out as an option for an Eve fiction contest just doesn't seem right to me.

Opinions will differ. The rule stands, however.
I may do other, different contests in the future with different rules, but I like the stories I got last year with this set.
I'm not limiting anyone's writing options (People can write whatever they want) - I'm limiting their writing options if they want to enter the contest. I hope if you have stories to tell about pod pilots, you will write and post them, even if noone is currently offering any prizes for that. --------------

Entry:
I played eve online and there was no lag when I got into a fleet battle. There was also a fair balance in gameplay so neither side just blobbed by one type of ship. Also, there were no bots anywhere to be seen, sov warfare worked correctly and the CCP valued a high quality product rather than over population of the game.
All new players were met with helpfull words and realised quickly that PvP, drama and working things out for yourself make eve the game many of us love.

They will still have to be CCP vetted, but they will be taking a look at the winners. So I hope you folks can cook up some good fiction.
Edit: If you are interested in being in EON, your story should probably be over 1400 words. That is generally about their minimum. --------------

It's OOC, but ISD generally always reports things from an 'IC perspective' - even things that are explicitly otherwise. No biggy, it's standard operating procedure.
I would have trouble coming up with a reason for my character to give away 4 faction battleships for a story contest. --------------

Avery's Birthday
Avery stood looking out the window, not seeing anything but where the condensation had turned to ice. She was mesmerized by the way it had taken hold and grown. ItÆs intricate design, beautiful, but cold and painful to the touch. And now it almost completely covered the entire window. It mirrored her plan to expand her fathers trade routes, system by sytem. New Eden was not prepared for Avery Winterfell. She had set her plan in motion, to take her fatherÆs freighters and trade routes for her own. Her father was a fool, even with two CharonÆs he was happy to stay where he was and force her to do his bidding. Avery was determined and she had made sure he would never leave or cause her pain ever again. She had already turned the heat off, packed, and was ready to leave this cold godforsaken planet. She was 17, a woman, and this was going to be her birthday gift to herself. She tried to enjoy the moment but the ice had already taken her soul and now winter was taking hold of her home, her prison. It was time to find some warmth, and the only way she knew to do that was through wealth.
Horror, it had been seared into her very being, to live with her until the day she died. She had just turned 13 when her father came into her room, to steal kisses from the birthday girl, as he called it, But Avery knew he was there to plunder her virginity. His hair was black and he kept it short. He was a sloppy man, slovenly at best. He was tall, and within two strides he was at the bed. He laid his weight upon her, forced her legs apart and grunted his breath across her cheek. Hours it seemed, and with every thrust a layer of her heart turned to stone. And when he was done, He whispered, I love you Avery. That was the moment the ice began to grow.
Avery remembered how her mother had burst into the room, to late. He was done, she lay ragged and crying on the bed, her father leapt off her flying across the room to grab her mothers throat and throw her to the floor. He was beating her, she heard her mothers jaw crack. The blood was flowing from her face and dripping onto the floor. It all happened so fast, a moment, and her world was gone. Then the thunk, as he released his grip and her head fell to the floor. He turned and looked at her, Avery had tears streaming down her cheeks, a scream unable to be released, and he said, One word, and this will be you. I did this for you Avery.
Avery reached out to the window, to touch the ice that had formed. She had long delicate fingers. She was tall, like her father, with brunet hair that stretched to reach her waist. Her face was young, but you could see the years in her eyes, the structure was set as if it had been perfectly placed, her ears were holding her hair back away from her face. She would have been beautiful, but there was something missing, She was stern, hard and cold. Something was gone from those deep brown eyes, love perhaps.
As her fingers touched the ice, the window broke from the warmth of the blood on her fingers. She quickly turned and moved to her bedroom door. Her jacket was cinched tight against her form. A woman grown and determination in those dark brown eyes. She opened the door and looked back at her father. He lay fully clothed on the bed and his throat had been sliced down to the bone. Goodbye father, for the devil be your savior. Avery thought of the ice, intricate, beautiful and cold. No one will ever touch me again she thought to herself. Grinning, she shut the door and was gone, to seek warmth and wealth through the trade routes.

Fitting Out A short story about a Caldari WomanÆs trials, and the ultimate consequence of her failure to adapt into Gallente culture. Rated PG-13 for suggestive and implied descriptions, wording, and themes. (In other words, rated PG-13 for having Gallente in it!)
Link: http://nakalounge.blogspot.com/2011/03/fitting-out.html
Word Count: 3,000 on the dot, not including the title or pre-notes about content warnings and the link to this contest. Checked with Word's Word Count.
I tried to create a story that had a mix of story plot and descriptive culture. Originally, I tried to make it into a comedyà but my ability to write comedy sucks, and so it ended up developing into a darker satire instead û one that hopefully represents the darkness associated with EVE. Filled with small truths, some of which will appear all too real for some, only one thing can be concluded û I probably tried to put way too many things into this to be described within a 3,000 word limit. This work was done while experimenting with writing in a way different than the way I normally write stories, and so I will refrain from critiquing this (writing is art, and artists are their own worst critics), and hope that you, the reader, enjoy.

This man was dancing with finesse, the bass pumping his adrenaline and blood as the others around him had been. His attire was in sharp contrast to the others: he was wearing combat gear while everyone else was wearing some variation of light-emitting jeans and a white shirt. The pulsing colors made skin and fabric alike glow. The one man who didn't glow was the Civire.
He saw the men with rifles, and he made eye contact with them as the bass of the song dropped. It picked up, and it shot into a hardstyle track that played with a ferocity. His suit unfolded its helmet to the tune of the club, and the men approached him with their guns down. Still dancing, the solitary man looked through his helmet at the heat signatures of these men. Scanning them down, he knew all he needed to know about them. TEASER END

In a seldom frequented, backwater solar system in the deep and dangerous depths of outlaw space, a young man, no, a boy with no significance of any kind, was dying. His glamorous hopes and irrepressible dreams of a great existence, as an immortal Capsuleer, formed perfect, crimson globules as they were slowly pumped out of his broken body. His eyes were stretched wide like burning moons around alien planets and his face, almost ghoul like in the glow of flashing warning lights, was twisted in a ghastly grimace of anguish too great for any living person to intimately know and describe. Ceaseless spasms shook his frail body and caused him to cry out meekly. He couldnÆt understand why they wouldnÆt help him; he was here, dying, and yet they did nothing, his mind screamed into his failing consciousness. Maybe that old saying was true after all, you go into death the same way you came into life; alone. With that thought tormenting his tortured mind, the boy slipped into the eternal abyss.

A man in one of the poorer cities of the Minmatar Republic sees an opportunity to help himself and others less fortunate. Perhaps it is too good to be true, but the alternative is worse.
While I won't deny that the prospect of Fabulous Prizes was a strong incentive, I found the demand that the story be an exploration of life outside the capsuleer class quite appealing. Consequently, this story is, in truth aimed more at exploring the fabric of a civilization with a lot of conflicting pressures than developing characters or plot.
I don't believe I've said anything flatly contradicted by PF, but I have consciously tried to imagine what Minmatar society might be like away from the "high culture" of clans, tribes and storied traditions.
And this is my first attempt at any sort of fanfic, although I imagine myself a dabbling author at times!

Overwhelmed Civilian Facility
A civilian's-eye-view of what happens in an incursion. 2656 words.
Quote: Five minutes later, Michel and the rest of his class were crouched in the stationÆs life pods, wearing the bulky, one-size-fits-nobody enviro-suits. Through the podÆs windows, he could see the Sansha vessels methodically destroying the few sentry guns that had been placed around the station; he watched one of the guns in his field of view disappear, its nuclear reactor going nova. The high-tech ôglassö of the viewport darkened and polarized to shield the podÆs occupants from harmful radiation and blinding light, and the station shuddered slightly as high-speed plasma from the explosion splashed against its shields.
ôWhat do you think theyÆll do to us?ö Lian whispered from where she sat next to him, hugging her knees to her chest.
Probably implant us with mind control chips and use us as cyborg slaves aboard their ships, Michel thought, but aloud he said, ôThey wonÆt get us, donÆt worry. WeÆll be rescued.ö A second and stronger shudder shook the station, and alarms began to sound and flash red light through the pod.

Here is my entry into the contest.. Wandering Faith
Teaser Sampler:
Wincing sharply. Still staring through the rabbit hole that have become my own eyes while droplets of red cascade down my neck before dripping off into the clear water of the sink below. Only then, when the two liquid virtues of life explode into resonating ripples do my eyes find another target to focus on. The red of my blood expanding, following with the ebon flow of the waterÆs forced determination to disappear down the drain.
And there I go, but by choice or design
I canÆt help but ask myself as I watch the fused pinkish-hue mixture swirl into the black hole of my vision. The thoughts never cease. Simply standing there, staring upon myself once moreàbut not even seeing as my chest raises and falls slowly. My imagination picturing the piece of me that escaped my body, riding upon the train that helped forge this body into existence. Imagining my blood being driven by the water throughout the network of pipes that line this particular space station.

My entry on backstage is here!
The civilian pleasure liner shuddered briefly as the inertial dampeners struggled against the gravitational forces of a forced warp collapse. Camilla started from her contemplation as attendants began calmly moving towards the respective emergency posts, to find out the reason for the unexpected stop. Unplanned stops for runaway slaves were common on a ship this close to empire borders. If this was what they were being stopped for, then it was yet another delay while the ship was scanned and sent back on their way. They had already had so many stops at several planets and pleasure hubs that one more stop was beginning to vex her.

And here is my entry to the Annual fiction contest: Who am I, really?
Quote:
I am losing an awful lot of blood here and I can almost feel my strength oozing out with it. Street fighting is like my front lawn and I do not lose when I have the home field advantage. But, alas, I lost. As I forgot to keep an eye on the back yard.
Granted, I look like a criminal. And this scar tearing the centre-right of my forehead and progressing down would suggest other wars, illegal fighting, exotic dancers and dubious hubs. I have some sort of power you are not aware of? Some power that enables me to control your mind and cause you to think what I want you to think?

Out there, among the stars, are the waters, freedom incarnate. That dark, endless void is our destiny, our path, our goal. We must not fear it, nor should we control it. Rather, we should embrace it, trust it, love it. Its ever-changing face, its protean existence, is our very essence. We are those stars, the void, the awesome waters of space: ancient, forever, free."

Edited by: Nakayme Caonis on 31/03/2011 00:57:42 Out of the five to ten I read, I have to say that I like The Ball KingÆs Subjects the most. You can find it here: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1486316&page=1
I started off by picking five stories at random, and was disappointed that most of them were Sansha based, Starship based, or had overly-powerful hero characters. I also tried to stay away from historical events. That doesnÆt mean that the stories I read were bad, but I was hoping to see a bit more variety û particularly in the kind that depicts different portions of EVE that are not much considered or reflected in the game itself.
However, the reason I like The Ball KingÆs Subjects isnÆt just because itÆs the first story I read that actually got away from this û it is written rather well, and describes the Minmatar Republic in a rather dark and grimy way û that non-capsuleers are not as fortunate, and that many, many people who are fortunate have very little control to change their own destinies, and the destinies of others.
Stories like this are what give meaning to being a capsuleer û to have the wealth of nations, the power of stars, and the influence of gods. It is from the perspective of people in Stateira KaydosÆ story that it becomes clear û Capsuleers have the power to shed the bright light of hope to millions, or to blanket their futures into the deepest, darkest recesses of despair. To us, they are but a way to profit and further our trade. But to them, the power we have is unimaginable. It is no wonder that there was such a dislike for capsuleers in CCP DropbearÆs Chronicle Jita 4-4.
So, while I did read about ten stories, some even good, The Ball KingÆs Subjects was the only one that stood out as being original, deep, and exemplary of the non-starship culture that makes EVE, well, EVE.
PS - Stateira Kaydos: If you win, you owe me a Quafe in game. K? Thx.

Take your time, and thanks for holding this contest. Actually, I'd be surprised if you got it done today - 10 days after the entry deadline. Seriously. Haven't you learned anything from the CCP contests? You have to keep everyone waiting 1-3 months - OR LONGER - to announce the winners, for suspense!
