Looking for ideas on ships that could be used for moon surveying.
I was thinking about a Stabber since I'm Minmatar. Any of you prospectors out there have any other ideas? Seems the most important characteristics for a survey ship would be stealth, speed and CPU grid.
The launching unit requires 220 CPU, so keep this in mind when making suggestions. __________________________________

fit 65 ish probes in hold and a few wcs and some some defences no problem. Problem with stabber is you'll only be able to fit 3 or so probes in your hold and you can quite often get over 50 moons in some systems.

Try a badger, lots of cpu and a big hold to carry the moon survey thingy's.
If you use this tell me where yuo're scanning so i can come kill you i need some more scanners, honestly tho an indy is a good choice, just fit warp stabs incase of unexpected company. =============================================

I also slapped on a cloaking device so I could probe in low sec without much of a problem. It worked very well and it can easily be done with just about any indy. But the larger versions of each race are ideal. The primary reason for choosing the indy was the available payload of probes it could carry. You'll burn through them pretty quick.

Isn't it too slow though? Seems like it would take forever to get within 5km of a moon. Is there a way to get a microwarp drive on one?
Any of you guys know if the scan probe launcher works properly? The description says it holds 12 probes, but all I've seen is one. __________________________________

Me and my mates used this:
1 Iteron MK 3 with overdrives and MWD. 1 Probe Launcher. And it worked like a charm.
3 Mates: 1 in a BS and 2 in Cruisers served as protection against waywardly PC rats. Although few of them saw my indy warped at 60 km looked at a raven and 2 cruisers and thought better of it.
Scan away.
Of course this is allot of time and planing and all that. But, you can never have enough firepower.

nope - you just warp to 15km and your almost always in range, spin your ship to point at the moon and fire away, warp to next moon and repeat and the results start coming in after 10 minutes iirc (I did have an obsession with trying to bullseye the tiny moons - sad mofo I know )

holds only one probe at a time.

it will hold 100m3 of probes. For the shorter duration moon scanning probe, that means just one probe. But when you're talking about the system scanner probes (3au, 12au etc) they take up much less volume, and so you can fit in many more of them.

Ah ok, thanks guys.
One last question, what is the proper range to "shoot" a moon with those discovery probes? I know someone mentioned nearly 15km, but the Eve tutorial mentions getting just within 5km - it didn't say whether probe type matters.

the moons on higher sec systems can be scanned for practicing the scanning art in a safe way or not? -----------------------------

Warp to moon using "within 15km" option, turn your ship to travel in the direction of the moon, launch probe.
Rinse and repeat for however many probes you got, and watch the results come in 10 mins after each probe launch (or 40 mins for the slower probe)

Yes, I did try this as a test in a 0.7 system and it worked fine, but I was within 5km of the moon. Considering the probes are 200K each, I'd rather ask a free question on the board than firing several probes at a moon just to "range the distance".
Appreciate all the advice guys. __________________________________
