Edited by: CCP Daishi on 01/03/2011 04:28:59 Edited by: CCP Daishi on 01/03/2011 04:27:30 Hello,
I am CCP Daishi (You can call me "Mike" if you'd prefer). The Director of Events and Conventions for CCP Games.
Some of you may have heard through some less than conventional methods that we are going to be holding an EVE Fan Event at PAX East 2011 in Boston. Having been to PAX Prime in Seattle twice now, I can't say enough great things about this show. It truly is a consumer gaming show that is by gamers, for gamers. The unfortunate part is that if you haven't already bought a pass to PAX East, you are out of luck as they just sold out late last week
For those attending that will be looking for our booth, we don't have one of those for this show. As most of you may already know, March is quite a busy month for us at CCP with the EVE Fanfest that is being held in Iceland, so we have to put a lot of resources and focus on that to ensure it's a great success for all those that fly the thousands of miles to attend.
When talking about PAX East and what we were going to do, I simply felt that there would be a missed opportunity if we didn't do something for our fans and friends of CCP. So here we are now! I am going to provide some simple instructions below for you to follow if you are an EVE fan attending PAX East.
1. Send an email to [email protected] 2. Title that email "PAX East Gathering" 3. In the body of the email, simply provide me with your real name and one of your character names
Not that the email address you use to send the mail will be the one used for the invite.
FAQ:
Q. Do I need to be 21 to get in? A. You most certainly do. this will be taking place at a bar and ID will be checked.
Q. What day and time will this be? A. Saturday - March 12th starting at 7:30PM.
Q. Where is this party happening? A. At an undisclosed location in Boston's Financial District. Only a quick ride away from the PAX Venue. This will be revealed on your invite.
Q. Is there limited space at this? A. There is. right now we are at about 1/2 capacity for invites, so act fast!
Q. Will there be developers there? A. Absolutely. We are bringing two of our Atlanta EVE Online developers with us.
Q. Will there be drinks? A. Definitely! You'll just have to attend to find out the extent of this answer.
Q. Will you have swag? A. Working on getting some stuff there. Not going to to promise right now, but we do have something special for those who attend
Q. I have a question that isn't on here. Can I troll you in this thread to get you to answer it? A. Yes. Trolling goes a long way on these forums if you haven't noticed! I am no exception.
Now get that email into us! Hope to see you all there?

What if you just live nearby but aren't going to PAX specifically? If the EVE event isn't badged by PAX, why not allow local EVE players in general?

You are all good. The subject isn't important. The awesome mails I am getting from girls in Russia that want to date me has increased since the Massively article. I just tossed the subject thing in here for good measure.
It's pretty easy for me to spot the real requests from the fakes one :)

Should be pretty easy to take the Silver Line from the Convention Center to South Station, and most of the financial district is within a short walk from there. Though on a Saturday, any parking garages in the area shouldn't be full; not cheap, but not full.

For the first question: Not that I am giving the venue away, but it's about 1.1 miles away from the venue. A 20 - 25 min walk if you're up to it.
For the second question: That person will need to put a mail in as well.

Well I guess it highly depends what bar, last time I was in boston I got carded a few times and the others i did not. The main issue might be the fact that I dont think the dev is inviteing alot of people so they makin sure its 21+ with valid ID's to make sure no issues of someone waitin outside the bar/resturant whatever (just my thoughts)

It's Boston so you can't even enter a bar if you are under 21 or dont have a valid id. Just an fyi.
Also, 20-30 walk? Boston's kinda small, so that about covers all of downtown Boston. But there are some really good places downtown.
Figures I'd be out of town that week. If there are any Boston EVE folks who'd like to grab a drink the week after, hit me up.

Podcast interview can be found here: New Eden Chronicles Episode #02 - CCP Dev Interviews
Date: Recorded on Thursday February 24th, 2011 Hosts: CrazyKinux, Memoocan Guests: CCP Daishi, CCP Manifest
This special episode was originally supposed to have a few segments, including the only one that made it in the final episode. At almost 90 minutes, the interview that Memoocan and I did, managed to take over the whole show, and as such no other segments were recorded. Interviewed during this show were Mike Read, aka CCP Daishi, who is Director of Events and Convetions at CCP Games, and Ned Coker, aka CCP Manifest, the man behind most of EVE Online's PR!
During the show we had a chance to learn how both of them managed to infiltrate the Icelandic behemoth that is CCP Games today, and it made for some great story telling - then again, Mike is well known to enjoy telling a good story, his story! We also covered CCP's new willingness to help out Fan gatherings and other community driven initiatives. Mike was/is all over that one! A good chunk of time was also spent talking about PAX East 2011 and EVE Fanfest 2011 (#evefanfest), both of which are coming up in over the next 2 weeks.
Overall a great show!

Just to point out you might want to leave early if you are trying to get a taxi, friday night it is almost impossible to get a taxi in boston. Last year it took us over half an hour, some of that was because I was stuck with a cane (mobility issues) and lots of drunk idiots were running into the streets getting cabs ahead of me (almost getting run over); but in talking to the cabbie, it is just insane all friday evening and night all the time let alone when a convention is in town.
Hoping to be there if I can somehow get there. --

As a native new englander, let me give you a piece of advice. Park the car and don't drive. Seriously, a friend of mine who is a native of boston puts it like this:
To drive anywhere in Boston, you are required to break at least two traffic laws a trip just to get anywhere. Three if where you are going is somewhere that other people are also going.
The crosswalk signals have countdown timers that some people call "time till dead".
AND, it was designed incrementally from cow-paths so there are a lot of narrow roads, one ways, 5 street intersections, etc.
IF you must drive in Boston, use a GPS as finding your way through the maze via map is insane and you will miss streets so having something that can re-direct you when you **** up will be necessary.

You'll probably want to take 93 into the city. Driving around Boston isn't that difficult to deal with on the weekends and most garages charge a discount rate. Once we know the location I can suggest some nearby parking.

Listen to Aelana!! If you don't know Boston and want to walk away liking Boston don't bring your car. There's tons of Park and Rides for the commuter rail into the city no matter which direction you're coming from. I've always done Boston on foot and it's a city that lends well to it. If anyone's taking the Providence to South Station Line let me know, we can talk nerdy to each other. http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/rail/

Sorry to imply that I could not make it "wherever". I've actually been to Boston a few times and have been quite successful in entry and exit. Coming from around Portsmouth, NH, means an easy travel down I95 for me. However, that being said this; Originally by: Aelana Anais To drive anywhere in Boston, you are required to break at least two traffic laws a trip just to get anywhere. Three if where you are going is somewhere that other people are also going.
... was epic. I'd have described NYC the same way but without the same aplomb.

Actually, for the New Hampshire/Northern MA/S Maine crew, I'd be happy to host a small little pre gathering in Exeter, NH starting around noonish the day of. Feel free to bring laptops or you can use one of my machines to do whatever it is you do in EVE. Will provide light snacks and homebrew. Then we could take the T down to Boston, or carpool. I think round trip on the T will be around 20 bucks. Ill check the schedule and provide more exact details later.
Send me an EVE Mail in game if interested.

Just double checking. Actually my wife is not coming. I love her and a few hours of geeking out over a game is asking way too much of her. However several of us are carpooling and I heard mention of a friend coming along. PS: I should point out that she did go with me to one player gathering held by DJ Zod in NYC. One geek out session per marriage is, me thinks, the limit. I just wish that went both ways as all the employees at Fashion bug (in 5 states) know my name as well as hers.

In that case I'm truly glad the missus is not coming along. The real horror for her was NOT two hours or so of endless geek talk that she was exposed to that day. What chilled her bones, to the point that she actually remembers that meet clearly, is the way you devoured buffalo wings. It's a combination of wasting absolutely nothing in the shortest time possible mixed with a little bit of starving refugee. Kind of like that one vicious character in mortal kombat whose fatality maneuver sucked in her opponent and spat out bones. I am still quite impressed.

I'm sorry you see things this way. I noticed the announcement in the log in news. I log in only a couple of times per week; I do not on a smart phone; I avoid the Eve Forums simply because there is little I find interesting; I can't stand twitter/facebook as I think it encourages are fruitless "Me! Me! Me!" neurosis in our culture; most external gaming sites give me little information that I seek but instead spend their time being as populist as any craptastical media outlet. (Hmmmm.... perhaps I should become the first Technophile Luddite.) I actually did follow the link about "alternative means" and tbh doesn't mean a hill of beans to me. It's a cute thing for what it is worth and if CCP was giving it a try big woohoo. But to think it creates some sort of exclusivity - I'm breathing typing proof it does not.

Had a good time.
Face time usually involves facing a great number of cliches. As an example, most of us guys fit our cliches - at least in appearance and manners. The many Eve women present however were not very cliche at all - and quite lovely. But I've got Athre as an example so I shouldn't be too surprised that attractive women play Eve.
Wealth, howsoever got, in Eve makes Lords of morons and gentlemen of thieves; Aptitude and intellect are needless here; 'Tis impudence and money that grants fame. |

I had to leave before I got my iPod. But, the event was awesome. Got hammered and meet some very interesting people. Also, I forget whom handed out the CSM flyer... but whoever it was handed me a beer at the time. Drunk voted for that person when I got home.

Hmm I missed the whole ipod thing... sad panda :p
Other than that I LOVED this get together :) Thanks to all the folks that set this up and everyone there who made the night fun! Sorry for having to part the crowd to get booze ;) [I was the one with the cane, btw ;)]
Now if only my knees would recover from the rest of PAX :D

This get-together was fantastic. I had a good time drinking with people that have destroyed some of my ships before and it was also very conveniently located for me since I was staying at the hotel right across the street, heheh. It was great meeting you all and I hope to be able to make it to another event like it in the future. |
