Note: Title meaning, using A destroyer to ferry around cargo.
Hello, all. I have a nice little trade plan going here which my old strategy has proven inefficient. When I was working in trading Frigate modules, I could just go around in a frigate and pick them up, bringing them to my home station, loading them up in my indy, and then I head out. However, now that I have upgraded to trading cruiser modules (25 m^3, as opposed to 5 m^3), I have found that frigates can't really hold that many of them. So, I came up with the idea of using a destroyer to fly around my area and pick up my goods, then bring them back to my Indy. I was wondering if this is a decent tactic, or if I'm doing something wrong altogether.

Each race has a cruiser that can be used for indy purposes, though the Exequror is the best, I think it can get 1,700m3+ in cargo space and can fit a decent buffer tank.

I use a small "mining" frigate, one of the 320m3 version to run around and scoop up smaller loads. They are fast, carry a decent load, and eat up MUCH less space in the Cargo of the Indy. Unlike a Destroyer or Cruiser, the reduction in cargo capacity to house the "quick transport" ship is minimal.
As a side note, a corp mate uses an Orca as their main hauler. With a ship maintenance bay, he has Inty V, and a mining frigate in there, so it's not taking up cargo space. Sure the Orca is as slow as a freighter, but the usability of Large, Medium, Small sized cargo from various locations is a real bonus. That and he dumps cheap garbage in the scannable cargo bays, the good stuff is left in the corphanger.

Rumia, there is a frigate (magnate) that can carry about 1000m3 of stuff when fully expanded.
Other than that, I suggest you try this:
- take the entry point racial hauler, they give at least one or 2 at the tutorials for free.
- put some nanofiber internal structures / inertia stabilizers in the lows
- eventually put agility rigs
You should get something with WAY bigger room than a destroyer or even a cruiser, cheap and that still warps around at a decent speed. - Auditing & consulting

VV beat me to it. Back in my trading days I motored around in a Magnate. Biggest cargo for a frigate and if you roleplay (on a scale of 0 to 10 of roleplaying, I'm a 1, but still) it's a 'luxury' craft so it makes sense that Internet Spaceships traders would fly it.

e: Wait, what? You're using a frigate to move things to your indy? Cripes man, just use the indy.

Edited by: HillAnt on 01/03/2011 23:52:27 I ♥ Hauler Magnates. Buy a rigged one from contracts and you dont need the rig skills in order to have rigs on it.
train amarr indy 2, buy a cargo expanded bestower off of the contract market, below the market price of the 3 rigs + bestower. This takes less then 12 hours to train for. a rigged cargo expanded bestower can hold about 21K m3. With Giant Secure Containers it can haul a jetcan per trip (27.5K m3)
Next on the ladder is the mammoth, with rigs it can hold 27.5K m3 and with giant jetcans, 35.6K m3 of small items (which are below 1951 m3 per unit).
The Iteron 5 can hold about 38K m3, with giant jetcans about 49K m3 of small items.

The largest low skill industrial is the Bestower. Amarr Frigate 3 + Amarr Industrial 1.
The ultimate fast hauler is a Blockade Runner, one of the tech 2 Transports.
Still if you want something smaller (I wouldn't bother if I had a Bestower):
[Magnate, Big Cargoho'ld = 1,008.72 m3] Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II

There is something seriously wrong with game balance when you can fit a frigate to have a larger cargohold than a battleship.
That being said, train your racial industrial skill. You can get the skillbook and ship as a mission reward from the business and industrial tutorial agents. Neocom Help Career Funnel shows where your racial agents are located.

Edited by: Cyniac on 02/03/2011 09:57:12 If it fits in the Magnate (1000 m3) then go for the magnate, much faster than any of the indies and it's a great way to get into some dynamic trading of modules and stuff.
Perky little ship really. Additional bonus with a bit of practice you can run it just as happily through lowsec and through highsec (though you'll need to learn a couple of tricks first)
A few other thoughts -
Destroyers are sluggish, don't use those for trading, they don't move much faster than an industrial.
Also just for the record, I hit the capacity limit of my magnate when trading around 500 million worth of goods. Still a nice ship though to build up some iskies.

The tier 1 indies have amazing agility, especially rigged. Destroyers don't have bad cargohold with expanders and can be used also. I know the thrasher has good agility. I'd really recommend just getting a wreathe or sigil with an inertial stab.
