I have a 22 month old that won't let me leave the room, and insists on watching programs filled with deranged looking childrenĘs entertainers and Day-Glo shaded puppets. I need something to keep my poor, old, tired brain active and this looks to be that game. I adore the idea of a game that lets ME decide what I want to do, and doesn't just shuffle me off into raiding that I don't really like and get no enjoyment out of.
So far I am doing all the tutorials, and then want to practice for a while honing the skills the tutorial gave me. I am not planning on being into PVP as thatĘs not where my strengths lie I feel being someone who easily gets flustered. However I like the idea of mining and industry and so on, and non PVP pursuits.
From what I am reading skills make a lot of difference to anything in this game, even if you have a decent ship, the skills you have can make a lot of difference. Similarly with any other profession you decide to embark on. What I would like to know is if their is a site with a list of all skills and what they are good for. I have eve survival bookmarked however just wondered if there was a site that would help me plan out the skills and what I wish to do a little more. I am very patient and donĘt need to be making tons of isk NOW, I know that this game takes a lot of effort and patient and that's kind of the draw for me. Just wondering if there are any resources out there to help me plan more efficiently.
Thank you in advance for your time Nim

Hi, welcome :)
Look here for descriptions, click on a "Main article: ... skills overview" category for a comprehensive overview. Alternatively, download EVEmon --> make a plan --> look at what all the skills do.
There's an overwhelming lot of information but eventually you'll get the picture, don't be discouraged.

I don't if there's a site with all the skills, what you CAN do is go to your char sheet ingame, then settings and do "show all skills", then go back to your skills. Now you'll see all the skills ingame and you can rclick>info them to see if they would be of interest to you. Bit of effort I agree but there's no substitute for having your own "aha!" moments.
Other than that there's many ways to make isk, some you can combine nicely (trading+hauling+production). Also, try joining a good (starter) corp like EVE-University where you can mingle with others and learn a lot.

It's not so much skills as it is about having a clue of what you're doing... but yes, skills do help.

None that I know of, but you can ask here, for example, for general advise on some profession. Plus there are profession-specific guides that explain what skills needed (don't ask me where I never used those... well, except maybe piracy guide). There's a bit too much to cover so no "ultimate guide" that explains all skills around. Best I know of is ISK, but that's more of a game manual that CCP should have done.

That's good, it's rather slow-paced for most people, better now with learning skills removed tho.
There's EveMon that helps with skill planing (won't explin anything, but handy to have... especially if you keep track of multiple accounts).
And EFT for fittings (mostly handy to check what/how you can actually fit before buying stuff).
That shuld cover most basic needs, unless you're into market. |

Thanks so much for all your replies, they are very helpful, and to be fair, just what I was looking for, some direction as to where I should be looking to be able to plan out what I would like to do.
Isk making comes a poor second to me actually enjoying my TIME in game, for a good few years now I have been running our household on the money I have made from character portraits, guild/clan sites, and all kinds of MMO related artwork that usually cannot be purchased with in-game money.
However it seems I am reliably informed by many people asking for commissions at the moment that EVE allows such items to be bought with ingame gold and plexes, a new thing for me really *smile* However actually enjoying my time in game, there is really no substitue for that!
Thanks again that site is indeed now bookmarked and will be read avidly, and I will also have a good look at all the skils in game for my own Ahah moment. Thanks again! Nim

Yup; practically anything you can think of can be bought with ISK (don't call it "gold", it gets people riled). Game time, artwork, sexual favours, as long as you can agree on the price then go right ahead. The only big no-no you should be aware of is that selling ISK for real money is forbidden, and will earn you universal derision and get all your accounts banned.
The only way in which ISK and real money ever interact (legitimately) is when you buy a 60-day game time card from CCP or one of their licensed resellers) and turn it into 2 PLEX, which you can then sell in-game for ISK.

Nim,
This game is essentially a space ship game. Industry and science are not the most exciting things you can do in this game. it's more about flying the ships themself and using them to pewpew other ships.
However, to be able to do anything in this game, whether it be industry or piracy, you need isk. For science and industry probably alot more than pewpew. Mission running is your bread and butter. You can make a decent amount of isk plus LP and standing (needed to set up a pos for industrial or science jobs)in relative safety. To be able to do missions, you need combat ships and skills. Start with those first. Go for Caldari coz they are the PvE kings (tengu, golem, navy raven) altho not the best at PvP. Also, dont htink it's safe to do industry alone as you will find out as soon as you start your first corp. You will most likely be war decced by a griefer who will try and ransom you because, after all, a mininghulk or an industrial doesnt shoot back
After ou got some hopurs of flight look around and you will see that you dont neccesarely need skills to make isk. You can grief, scam steal your way through eve by just using your common sense. Have fun lol.

I would also suggest checking out this guide for info on pretty much anything in EVE - it gives some good advice on what skills and stuffs you need to achieve certain goals - reading the sections on Industry/mining will give you an idea of the sort of stuff you should aim for.

Get eve mon! it is almost needed in eve.
skills help and the tutorials will give you a good base of skills to start.
best thing is to get into a good corp and ask questions. ______ Hello WoW players. Look at your toon, now back to me. Sadly it isn't me, but if it wasn't simplistic pre scripted linear mono dimensional game you could look like me. I'm in a Paladin |

Edited by: Dead Bait on 03/03/2011 18:49:09 Welcome to Eve.
I agree with those above
Eve Fitting Tool and Eve Mon
You would find VERY useful.
Best advice I can think of for starting a character... Don't try to train everything at once, pick 1 ship you like and train to fly it well, then branch out.
It doesn't take long to be playing in the top tier of Eve, what most veteran players have over new ones is knowledge of the game and more choices in what they can fly.
