'LucidEnding', a Reddit user is tracking the final few days of his life as he ends his fight with an aggressive cancer. Unable to continue with relentless invasive surgeries and treatments he has asked that he be taken off the various medications and be allowed to record his last thoughts.
LucidEnding at Reddit.
Quote: On Tuesday I'll finally end my battle with cancer thanks to Oregon's Death with dignity act. As part of my preparations I've ended my pain medication and am trying to regain what little dignity and clarity I can.
Who I was doesn't matter. I'm in pain, I'm tired and I'm finally being granted a small shred of respect.
The thread is gaining a lot of attention and some of his posts are very moving.
Godspeed mate.

Seems like a stupid thing to do. Going off the pain medication I mean, not the dying with dignity part. It's not like you have to worry about getting addicted, affording the stuff or side effects, since you're going to die anyway in a few days. Seems like a situation where you could actually use the good stuff, that doesn't just take away the pain but actually brings pleasure.

Not that I in any way would ever suggest I have any experience with this, but I would assume that in your last hours you would want to experience everything crystal clear rather than being drugged into numbness. --- Stultorum infinitus est numerus.

Heavy pain medications make you loopy.

I'm not the most sensitive person, but a lot of stuff in that thread is really humbling. Makes you stop and think about the world and people around you. --

It's nice that he was allowed to die with dignity, under his own volition.

I like this quote - Death most resembles a prophet who is without honour in his own land or a poet who is a stranger among his people.

I read that thread earlier today, and it didn't really sit right with me. I've always been pro-choice when it comes to living or chipping out in that sort of situation (and I can't believe I'm even righting that, it seems so bleeding obvious to me), but that thread just seemed a bit wrong.
The guy seems way to motivated by consideration of the people around him when it comes to his own life. I mean he's choosing the time of his death so as to be done and dusted before his sisters birthday party! and he doesn't want any loved ones around him at the time of his death so as not to upset them? Seems a bit screwed up to me. His 'consideration' may end up causing more pain to his loved ones than open honesty and allowing them to help him on his way at what is his own time and pace. I hope this doesn't turn out to be some evil ploy by some religious anti-euthanasia nut making a point about people feeling compelled to do it for the benefit of their loved ones.

Edited by: Pr1ncess Alia on 07/03/2011 05:45:38 I was going to reply to this thread this morning when it posted but as is rare for me on the internet... I had nothing to say.
Had my own brush with death last year but after 8 months I got lucky and have a decent chance of getting to live to see something else kill me
Seriously, staring down my mortality felt more bizarre than anything but it was a trip and one I don't regret living through.
I'm not sure if I learned anything, still figuring that part out. It was, for me, incredibly interesting. ... it's somehow telling (but sometimes impossible to translate) watching people's individual reactions to others' and/or their own mortality/death.
I don't think any of us really have a grasp on it. Sure, it's a simple fact we all acknowledge, but our exposure to it changes us each time. It's like the same function of our human condition that prevents us from comprehending infinity, clouds our ability to grasp an inevitable and absolute ending. A nothingness. And so we almost never really make peace with it.
Because of that we often make light of it, play games with it, become enamored and revolted by it at the same time. We try to ward it off, and even force people to hang onto theirs even if they do not wish it. Some of us even inflict it. We make up stories about how it isn't real and something else incredible happens past that barrier. (sorry, not to offend just my take on it) We treat it with the most utter reverence. We must. And I think we should.
...And while we starve for insight through acts like watching this man, it rarely if ever comes. Regardless of that..
it's kind of him to share it with us.

I was in that place over the 2009-10 Christmas and new year period, was told by a doctor in ITU my only slim chance of living was to be placed into an induced coma and I was left with 30 mins or so while they prepared everything to get my head around it as I lay dieing and asking the nurse to make a list of things to do to give to my family and some personal messages, luckily for me I got through it.
There is no way to explain how you feel to someone who has never faced it but I believe it definitely changes you.

Hardly evidence of a hoax, a suspect statement among the dozens or more posts the guy made? Also, apparently there are many other drugs involved that are given via injection before an oral substance is given that will deal the lethal blow.
But, I suppose you'll see what you want to see... your earlier comments kinda flagged you as a non-thinker anyways.
Here's a real kicker. What if he didn't reply to personal messages because he's already dead? Hoax or not I find it rather messed up they aren't supposed to allow lethal injections in that state but it's ok to swallow a lethal substance?
I'm sure some concerned individual like dr doooerpy was behind that stellar legislation.
