I'm reading a series of books by Stephen R. donaldson written in the late 1990's, called the "gap" series, and I must say I am shocked at the similarities that Eve has these stories. Here are some examples; Outer space is colonized and mining asteroid fields is a large part of the economy. Normal Space (empire?) is patrolled by police ships.(concord?) Forbidden space (null sec?) is not patrolled AND has pirates that will scan down your ship and blow it up and salvage it. There's a mysterious race of aliens (Jovians?) that live in forbidden space, that have superior ships and technology, some of which has leaked out to the humans. Nural implants that enhance mentality. Pirate ships are customized to gank other ships and or out run them. Ships have jump drives, warp drives, antimatter and laser cannons. There is a ship called "zephyr" A cruiser called "Punisher" They refer to invasions by the aliens as "incursions" And many many other similarities. Kinda seems like eve "borrowed" some of their ideas for this series. Anyone else read these books? Sorry for the spelling (posting from phone)

It's an excellent series to be sure (one of my favorites in the genre), but it diverges from EvE fairly significantly in that the alien race, the Amnion, are very very alien indeed, unlike the Jovians who were once human.

As an avid sci-fi reader I can confirm that a lot of recent sci-fi fits the description of the OP. Science-fiction tropes will ruin your life.

I somewhat agree Akita, however this series was written almost 15 years ago, and the list of exact name matches for ships and moduals is astounding to me. There are many, I just couldnt remember them all. Just an intersting observation to me. : )

It's just because everyone uses the same real life creatures/objects as inspiration.
Not very long ago there was a list comparing US military aircraft/vehicles with EVE ship names (including the Zephyr and Punisher, if I'm not mistaken).

The new titan doomsday is allso described as the "proton supercannon"
And, yes, I do believe EVE is based loosely on the GAP series, proberly the best SiFi ever written. I have read allmost all the books on Akita's list, but they are not even close.
Happy reading :)

Not knowing Gap, and not denying it's influence.
What I know is EVE goes back to the Elite series (which had most of the core mechanics: trade, asteroid mining, missions, empires, ranks/standing), which goes back to Traveller, which goes back to Science Fiction of that time (say Dune...), coupled with spread sheet nerdism (w/o spreadsheets).
Meaning to say most Science Fiction setting have the same roots, so at their core they will appear similar. It's the look or philosophy that will characterize them.

I have to agree with the OP, I've read lots of Sci-fi Books, and the Gap series does read like an Eve blog. Very good series btw. So was Donaldson's "Thomas Covenent series", but it's more of a fantasy then Sci-fi. |

Yes I have read these books. Well two of them, before I drop kicked both of them into the bin because I couldn't take Mourns constant crying any more, serious why the **** would you have a main character who whines and cries all the time.
Oh wait it is just like eve.
Seriously, she cries for two books. **** you Donaldson you misogynistic ****.
Read Ender, much better.

Donaldson sure can write. His explanations for warp drive technology is very advanced. Oh and the series opens up with a pirate raping a mining OP. Very complex gallery of personalities also. Authentic so it makes you want to reach into the book and punch someone.
I would be surprised if it haven't served as a source of inspiration for the people behind eve.

Mourn cries alot... but, she get's back in action again... with a vengeance.
She's a complex personality, not just your everyday action bimbo.
I tried to make my main charecter after her, but the name was taken.. ofcause!

I prefer to compare eve to anything by Alastair Reynolds, like Revelation Space or House of Suns (awesome book!), mainly due to the super science and the sheer scale of everything he writes about, dunno if anyones ever noticed that the Magate is supposed to be 80 meters long and in Eve thats tiny! Also I just plain don't like Donaldson or his characters, especially Thomas ****ing Covenant. Whines a lot goes to a magical land, doesn't believe in it, ****s a girl, whines about it, saves the day through being a whiney prick, is a hero... ****head!

I'm showing my age now. But I read Cyberpunk in the mid 80's as a teenager. And they were far in advance and imaginative than some of the EVE background and lore. Cyberpunk

As an avid reader of Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (to the guy a few posts up - sounds like you didn't really get the point of those books) I naturally moved onto the Gap series. I enjoyed them very much. There aren't many fiction books you can read and come away with a better understanding of the human psyche. Your post has made me want to revisit them.

When I was growing up my mother had a fairly large collection of science fiction books, for the most part written in the 50's and 60's, and one of the main reasons I got into EVE in the first place was all of the things that are in EVE that I had read in those books. --------------------------------------------

Yeah I had the whole series but gave them all away along with multiple cartons of other books. I used to really read a lot and periodically had to purge my collection as I just didn't have room for them.
Donaldson's big thing was taking a character and really putting them through hell. Other authors make their characters struggle but ... of the ones I've read ... I'd say Donaldson put them through the worst. And ... the thing is ... they don't all get better in the end.
Of all the comparisons to be made between EVE and Donaldson's books - I'd say the tone of a harsh, cold, totally uncaring universe is the one they have most in common.
I guess that's the thing about heroism ... is that ... the more the hero goes through ... and often the weaker they are ... the more heroic their deeds.
IRL - you don't have to go through anything like a fictional characters misfortunes to be that heroic ... simply the fact that what is happening to you - however bad it may or may not be - is real makes up for that. One of the worst things people in the real military go through - is the mind numbing boredom of much of their existence. That is what Mr. Roberts was all about.
But - in fiction - to convey that feeling of unending suffering - often times things get exaggerated to make the point. Of course ... there are historical people who've gone through some truly horrible things.
I must confess though - that after my buddy read the second Thomas Covenant series and told me it was more of the same ... I passed.

I'm a Donaldson fan myself and as was mentioned in this thread he does like to put his main characters through the mill, I loved the Gap series and the Thomas Covenant books as well but even I have to admit after the 2nd trilogy I was glad it was over, I also love the "Mordants need", fantasy not sci-fi but the premise of magic based around the use of mirrors was a interesting, that along with Donaldson's characters made for a superb read, and thankfully only 2 books.
As for the OP there's so many similarities from so many area's of the genre it's hard to say that any one piece of film or literature is the main source of influence. A lot of the ships also have names from greek mythology so you could point to Homer, Pindar, or Aesop as an inspiration.
It's safe to assume a lot of stuff like this would be found if only to tie you to the game even more by giving it real world references.
