Would it be such a bad thing to introduce a system where PLEX could be used for other eve merchandise? For example I would probably not ever pay for the magazine with cash since it's pretty expensive, but being space rich it's not as big of a concern to me. So for a few plexes, I could probably justify grabbing an issue here and there for fun.
I'm aware that the eve store and magazine crew are somewhat separate from CCP as an entity, but if they can find a way to use PLEX for natural disaster relief I'm sure there is an amicable way to convert it into money for their business partners. I imagine the demand for PLEX would go up as well, so you'd have more people buying PLEX for ISK increasing overall sales.
The only initial concern I had was what happens if RMT'rs starts buying up RL assets and selling them at discount for cash. Thinking further on that wouldn't it just create even more demand for PLEX, thus damaging the profitability of their illegal ISK sales? Not sure on that point, I suppose it's up for debate.
Still I thought it would be sort of cool to be able to get IRL space junk with ISK, and it seems like a pretty realistic way to make it happen... Probably already been discussed to death, but i'm still for it.

If they implemented this, my wallet would be empty. The only reason I worry about this is it would effectively be a CCP sign off on RMT - while an EVE shirt isn't as good as cash, you can sell it for cash
Then again, when I looked last, they permit trading of ISK for eve related services like Vent, web hosting, and signature design.
Taxes aren't the issue for the same reason they aren't an issue for people who use PLEX. Taxes occur at point of sale, which is between the original buyer of the PLEX and CCP.

Edited by: Kuronaga on 10/03/2011 02:41:00 CCP already condones RMT -- just only with them. Anyone with eyes can see that, but maybe it's not a bad thing if its done right.
To an extent, I also have some fear that these items could be re-sold. It certainly seems like the obvious RMT strategy.
Even so, the original amount of the items value still had to have been purchased from CCP (via plex) before anything could even be attempted from the RMT side. The RMT'r would also have to sell for less then CCP's shop price, which in conjunction with the increased demand/value of PLEX sort of screws over the RMT market even more.
If they were to start buying stuff from the eve store in bulk along with everyone else then the RMT market would end up killing itself due to the plex demand increase, I think.
Remember though, the idea isn't to stop all forms of RMT with ISK -- that would involve destroying plex and that just isn't possible at this point (if it ever was). The idea is to make sure the value of ISK/plex gives both CCP and the honest customer the most benefit, and not folks running RMT websites.
It seems to me that this would benefit everyone but the RMT guys.

Buying an EvE Online T-Shirt with plex: 600m ISK.
Having to delete your character because your 5000 man alliance is trying to hunt you down for consuming their entire 250 billion ISK war fund to pay for shipping: Priceless.

CCP sells Fanfest tickets for PLEX. While you can't sell your ticket off as it's non-transferable, you can just buy it for someone else.
CCP doesn't exactly make RMT impossible as long as they're involved. Sites that sell in-game crap for cash are, of course, a different story. Credit card fraud anyone?
