I've thought of a tactic or two, but I'm anawares if they would actually work. My question is has anyone ever baited and countered a bomber hot drop with any success and how did you do it??

Edited by: Ari Kelor on 13/03/2011 14:23:07 I'd like to know what you've thought of as a counter...
You have to remember that the hotdropper holds all the cards and if they see a trap, they just won't decloak. Any good hot dropper will wait until the time is just right to catch the prey off guard. They make the call on when and where to engage, and defensive tactics are boring and tedious.
I've always found that the best way to counter a hot drop is either rat in groups or use a ship that wouldn't be a good ganking target, something that is to high risk with low reward. Tactics in this case is more of preventative measures more than an active counter defense.
Good luck,

I know someone who warped a Domi into a swarm of Stealth Bombers waiting to go a hot dropping. Something like 17 kills using smart bombs. He was kinda sad though, he did it solo figuring he would lose his ship so was not prepared to push the attack and kill the Widow and a few bombers that were outside the SB range. He got out with his ship though.

I've seen counter hot drops and standard fleet counters to hot drops as well. An SB fleet with BOs and recons is pretty hard to pin down. Even if they jump in on a bait fleet they can GTFO pretty quick. The single most common tactic is a bubble shooter at or near the cyno recon. This puts most of the bomber fleet in a bubble, which they must escape quickly since they're glass cannons. A counter group of bombers can really pummel the area with bombs. However, the cyno recon is unlikely to light the cyno if they can't account for pilots in system but not visible. The best way to work against a hotdrop SB/BO fleet is to disrupt it at the staging area. A dedicated probing team and some cyno recons could make for an interesting situation. |

An interesting footnote to this: No pilot with a brain would use a regular cyno for a covert hotdrop. They would have a toon with Cyno 5 and use a covert cyno gen. Can't see it in local? Idiots that are unaccounted for don't know where to warp until they see the blighter squealing in corp/alli chat. By that time the bombers have more than likely finished off their target and bridged/jumped back to their staging system. If they hot drop right on your head, you can see the covert cyno. infact you can see the covert cyno from anywhere on grid. so if you set up bait with a cloaked dictor sitting nearby, you might be able to trap them.

As far as I know, only BlackOps can see other covert cynos. Everyone else will be unaware.

Then I assume the magic word is 'on grid'?
I'll remember that, when I jump into my Widow

For the most part, SB/BO fleets don't jump to a regular cyno for the drop. However, a bait drake (or any other big tank) with a regular cyno can be used. If you don't expect the ship to survive anyway, it doesn't much matter that its visible.
I've been on a hotdrop that was counter dropped by two carriers with smartbombs. Most of us got away fine. In fact, the few times I've been in a fleet that was counter dropped by carriers, most everyone got away. Even when the titans had the old style DD, we mostly got away. The only real damage you can do to an SB/BO fleet is to kill the BO's and then maybe recons. The bombers are cheap to replace so no one much cares if they get killed. Recons are a little pricey, but no big loss. Any counter drop or other counter tactic (like login traps) has to focus on finding a way to trap the BO's before they can escape. The destroyed SBs and recons will be replaced and the pilots will be back on the bridge BO in less than 10 minutes. |

Yes, as a BO pilot myself this is a very key note to remember. Also anyone on grid on yourside of the bridge will see your Jump Bridge activate.
so make sure no one is in system if you plan on doing hot drops for more than a few hours or they will find you.
But yeah, having a cloaked dictor near your bait and some smart bombing ships ready to jump in, is probably the best way to counter these gangs. without the bubble they will just warp/cloak. (side note: they still take AOE damage while cloaked.)

A couple of notes.....
You cant warp to a covert cyno, but you can bookmark it... so setup a bait ship somewhere, then position a durka BS on grid, cloaked, about 200km's away. When the cyno goes up, bookmark it, and warp on top of it. Then enjoy the fireworks. If they have ships bigger than SB's, you probably won't kill them before they get out of smartbomb range.

Nano Disco BS's.
If they're doing the "Tackle with Arazu, arazu cynos", you can cover the distance REAL quick with an overloaded nano phoon. 3 Overdrive, 3 Inertia Stabs, 1 Nano, Overloaded MWD gets up to 2.9 km/s in about 10 seconds. Get two of those and you'll alpha the bombers. ------------------------

Of c. biggest problem for counter hot drops is knowing when that AFK-cloaker is actually at the keyboard, instead of being at work etc.

That needs a counter in 0.0 space..... (to those that think it doesn't go back to WH space, stay there and never come back.)

Fit a cyno on your ship. Wait for them to drop there fleet then bridge in tons of interdictors and frigates via titan bridge
