I've been listening to Eve University's lectures, specifically the Dark Side of Eve and other related piracy, espionage, spying, ninja-ing lectures, etc. I've been ninja salvaging for 4 days now and I absolutely love it. I run an Imicus fitted with the standard probe equipment and some gravity rigs. I also run an Incursus fitted for speed, salvagers, and some tackle rigs. I've made roughly 60 million in 3 days within the same system. The system is hot and full of good loot.
I set my filter for battleships, command ships and marauders. I also use my directional scanner to check from a safe zone(Previous probe down location that is empty now) to check to see if the target has come back to take the aggro. I've had a few close calls, once I warped in on my target with an aggression timer from stealing his loot, luckily I warped away in time back to my safe zone. Another time I was in the last pocket and wasn't paying attention to overview. I was reading chat and I didn't even notice two targets warping into my location with my aggression timer on.
The feeling of ninja salvaging and stealing their loot is very satisfying. It is way more fun than mission running. But I'm wondering if there are ways I can further improve upon my income and strategies.
Is bait salvaging worth it? Anything I can do to improve upon what I am doing now? Are covert ops worth the investment for probing? Any recommendations for better salvage ships than the Incursus?
I appreciate any tips and tricks you guys can provide. I'm really enjoying my new mini profession.

Ninja Salvagers dont do it for the isk, you could make 60 million isk in a few hours of doing the same missions as your victims. Real ninja salvagers do it for the tears (not from stealing loot but from popping ships from those stupid enough to fight).

Yes because brand new players have access to the ships, modules, and agents that MRs do.
Ninja salvagers start out doing it for the isk, and when the training is right they start doing it for the tears. But salvaging has been and will be one of the easiest and most profitable ways a brand new character can make poop loads of easy isk. ♥

It's fast, per above, but also because it can fit the expanded probe launcher while having room for other stuff.
[Vigil, Ninja!] Co-Processor I Co-Processor I Co-Processor I
Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters Medium Azeotropic Ward Salubrity I Ship Scanner I
Salvager I Salvager I Expanded Probe Launcher I, Core Scanner Probe I
Small Ancillary Current Router I Small Ancillary Current Router I Small Ancillary Current Router I
Warrior II x1
Shipscanner is useful if you have uhm... "other reasons" to salvage missions, the drone is handy if a carebear decides to face Concord's wrath in an attempt to punish you for your salvaging deeds.

while the above fit could probably work fine..
you want to be scanning and salvaging/looting in different vessels if at all possible

That Vigil fit makes me sad. I started out with something like the below and flavor to taste. Once I improved my capacitor skills I dropped the rechargers in favor of a ship scanner and passive targeter.
There's absolutely no reason not to scan in a separate, bonused frigate and then salvage in the Vigil. My current Vigil fit with a T2 AB does ~1750 m/s
3x Salvager
1mn Afterburner 2x Cap Recharger
3x Nanofiber Internal Structure II

You don't need a bonused prober to find ravens and stuff like that, not even with low skills.
For someone who puts effort into this all then yeah go for 2 ships (or more possibly using an orca alt) but for a true newbie making it all work with one ship works just fine.

I did train up for a vigil after you recommended it, and man does that beast fly fast. To the Ninja Dojo, I will reserve your invitation for the future. I just joined up with a high-sec industrial/mission corp (Non pirate). So right now I have to mind my manners to stay in. However, if things don't work out, you will be the first people I contact. I appreciate the discussion, advice and invitations that were given here. Fly safe!

You can start by joining our public channel "Ninja Dojo", and checking our new forums at http://y0ink.us/forum. Recruiting is currently on hold due to wardecs in progress, but no harm in dropping by or filling out an app.

personally I use the cheetah to do my probing and my probe frigate to do the looting as with 2 T2 expander it can hold 650m3. 2 salvagers, an afterburner and s ship scanner.
the area that i work out of is reasonably safe as it's farmer infested and they don't shoot....trust me I taking the stuff from right under their nose and they don't shoot....really annoying as I feel CCP owes me a CNR killmail.
I look forward too talking witih like minded individuals and finding out how to provoke a fight with these targets. my first eve video

It would be best if you were to probe with a different ship, and use the Vigil solely for salvaging, since that's where it really shines. Having an MWD on it is a waste and a liability seeing that it both nerfs your cap, and bloats your sig radius. Sure, you'll be extremely fast, but you'll overshoot most of the wrecks, thus losing you time if you want to loot them as well (who doesn't nowadays). A Vigil with an afterburner is plenty fast enough (1.9km/s on mine) and most importantly, the lack of bloated sig combined with a truly insane speed means that you won't get hit by pretty much anything in a mission (webbing and scramming frigs are still a danger though).
Also, if you fit a Vigil correctly, you can take down up to BC sized mission runners (depending on their fit), should they shoot at you. That's what makes it truly awesome. (and yes, I've done so, taking down even Myrmidons and Drakes with it)
