Since I installed the new patch, I've noticed a couple of BSODs usually in nv4_disp ...
However I've noticed that the Utility that comes with my card for controlling the fan speed now doesn't think that EVE is a 3D app and runs the card at 2D fan settings, hence its overheating and eventually crashing. Its easy enough to fix, I set to 2D fan speed to be at the same as the 3D fan speed - but I shouldn't have to :(
I have a Gainward 6800GT GLH running the Version 70.90 Forceware drivers. Its not a driver issue however as over programs cause the correct fan speed to trigger, its easy to tell as you can hear it !
Anyone else getting this ?

you mean that the card dosn't automatically increase it's fan speed when it can when it gets too hot? What engineer designed that system?
yet another reason I'm glad I went to ATI cards.

Edited by: Skogen Gump on 03/02/2005 09:10:59 I've got a serious bug here Racknan, either be constructive or take your fanATIc rantings elsewhere ...
The reason that the fans is software controlled is because its not Nvidia specification, there are two 80 ml fans mounted in a special assembly that allow this card to run at speeds that exceed 6800 Ultra clockspeeds and makes my friend with an X800 XT envious... thats why it's software controlled
If you dont know what a BSOD is ... Linkage I've not seen a BSOD on this machine in 2 years - till I installed this update.

Still got a problem here, folks ...
I've got the latest drivers and software from Gainward and it makes no difference ... I'm currently running 2D mode in 100% fan speed, so EVE works.

Same here. BSOD with NV4_disp.dll Stop 0x0000008E error with the new patch. Latest drivers. Did notice that the rings around the planets are no longer squared off. So I suspect some change on EVE code vs no change to my Nvidia drivers.

I thought it was drivers, until I noticed that 'EXPERTtool' which controls the fan speed was running as if EVE was not using 3D acceleration - so my card was overheating and causing the BSOD...

hmm driver 70.xx ???
maybe use the latest stable 66.93 from nvidia.com - no problems with this version and eve
no tool needed for fan speed changes
check your card for dust preventing the airflow

Do what I did :
I run Eve on an two-year old laptop that at it's peak was only fairly decent. I have a drinking problem, in that I tend to spill anything I am drinking. (Airplane reference) So between the gallons of water, coffee, and soda I've feed my laptop and it's age, it runs not so well with Eve. The CPU fan only runs once in awhile when it feels like it and the other fan it had is dead. I thought Eve was going to be completely unplayable until my boyfriend and I played haxor and cut a hole in the lid of the laptop and rigged up a normal sized computer fan.
We chopped into the power cord and connected the fan into it so it runs at full speed constantly. I do love dremel tools. Unless it's a hundred degrees outside, my laptop doesn't crash from overheating at all no matter how long I leave it running and play Eve.
This may seem like a crappy, half-assed approach to the problem but it is easy and fun to implement, and pretty much permanent fix. I swear that this is a great solution, though I won't be at all sad when I someday get my new desktop that's water-cooled with many blue LEDs. Oh how sweet that will be! _________

Edited by: Skogen Gump on 08/02/2005 13:46:55 The tool is needed on this card for slowing the fans down because 2x80mil fans is very noisy at full speed - and the card's bios doesn't control it, the software does. It's not dust, the card it only 1.5 months old and I cleaned it on Saturday when I fitted a new PSU. Seriously - I know what I'm doing here and I'm not deaf :) when EVE starts, the fan doesn't spin up.
When every other bit of 3D accelerated software starts like Doom3, Beyond Good and Evil, Vampire Bloodlines - even the OpenGL screensavers, even EVE before this latest Patch ... the fan starts properly ... Ergo it's not Drivers or Hardware fault, it's the way that EVE initialises the graphics hardware.

I have the exact same card and it speeds up correctly when EVE starts. Well that is until I replaced the Tornado sounding twin fan cooler with one of these;
NV Silencer 5
The difference is astounding. Fan runs at 100% and I can barely hear it \o/
Anyway, back to your problem, I used to have an issue with certain games when the fan was set to dynamic speed. I changed that to fixed and set 2D at 50% and 3D at 100%. Have you tried that?

Edited by: Skogen Gump on 09/02/2005 14:10:42 I've always had it on fixed speed, the Dynamic setting gives me a whiney noise that grates on my nerves :(
I've considered one of those silencers, but this cards under warrenty still and I know of some people who've broken their cards fitting them ... I'm not gonna risk it :)
Last nights crashes were all down to Access Violations according to windbg, nothing to do with the overheating problem (which i've solved for the time being by setting both 2D and 3D fan speeds to 100%)

yeah, it does invalidate the warranty due to the fact that the double back plate needed to be hacked up to enable the cooler to vent to the outside!

since the last patch i have to run it in windowed mode or the whole computer locks up every 2-4 undockings... also on nvidia here... just another of the little joys of the new patch >_> -------------
