So I'll be spending some time in the US shortly, and was wondering about the possibilities to buy like prepaid mobile broadband services or similar for like 1-2 weeks.
Here in Sweden we have a few such services that anyone can buy, costs like $20 to buy a start package with modem etc and then like $10 per week to surf (3G/GRPS). No need to sign up and register any account and get bills etc.
Are there any similar services that I can get upon arrival to ensure my connectivity when not located at the hotel wifi? If so, how, where, costs, etc.

Check out the wireless carriers: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobilebroadband/?page=plans
Verizon has packages like what you describe. Where are you going? In Chicago we have a WiMax provider called Clear too. - - [SERVICE] Corp Standings For POS anchoring

Also depending on the region you'll be staying at, you can get Wifi free at some hotels, airports, libraries, coffee shops, etc.
Enjoy your trip!

I'll be in New York City, but the aim is to put it in my phone so I can use google maps and stuff like that - instead of having to roam using my current provider (which will cost me like $14/MB).

You should definitely be able to get a temporary mobile broadband in NY. Verizon, AT&T, Sprint should all have something like that. You should probably look into whether or not you can get some sort of WiMax service out there too. I'm pretty sure NY has a WiMax provider or two.

Virgin Mobile has cheap prepaid setups for USB broadband cards, and some android phones. You can get them at any Radioshack there. If you can find one within a few blocks of where ever you are, you're doing it wrong. I think I remember seeing virgin mobile 3g broadband card and 1 month of data (5 gigbytes) for $50 then $25 per month or something. Not too bad. ----

IIRC, this is only if your phone is quad-band GSM. The US GSM frequencies are slightly different than the European GSM frequencies, since the European GSM frequencies were already allocated when cell phones came to the US. ----------
