Belt rats named "Sansha's Loader" and there may be more variants...
NPC Sansha belt rats that don't fire at you - you kill them, check their cargo hold, and inside is either 100k tritanium or 40k pyerite (that I've seen so far - I've only found two).
Anyone have more experience with these? When did these get added?

Anyways, sounds like hauler spawns, which have been around for as long as I can remember.

Hauler spawns have been around since before I started the game. Probably from the very beginning tbh.

They are hauler spawns, been around forever.
Once you kill the largest spawn possible in a belt, you have a chance to do the following
a) Spawn a hauler spawn
b) Spawn a faction/officer
c) Start back at the smallest spawn
...Then when you stopped to think about it. All you really said was Lalala. |

I think RMR is around when they showed up.
Although that might qualify as the very beginning for some people 
@OP:
They're hauler spawns, unique NPCs that carry large quantities of common materials. I've not heard of them dropping rare minerals like megacyte or zydrine, though.

@OP:

I've had them drop 90k zydrine in 0.0 many times.
Usually, you'll get one rare and one common drop, though sometimes you can get both common or both rare minerals (yummy).
Also, when they drop common minerals in 0.0, they always drop millions of them - so many, that in old days you'd see the 4-5 cans and go f***, lol
