I don't suppose there's a way to stick Eve into wire-frame or wire-frame with flat fill colours? Kinda like Elite if anyone remembers that. Just curious if it would help in heavy lag...

lag does not mean framerate drops
lag is time it takes for packages to go from you to the server and back, and the time it takes you to process these packages and the server

Lag is a perceived delay between you making an action and that action taking place.
What you are talking about is latency. Whilst latency can be a contributing factor (ie network 'lag'), it is not the entire picture.
To the original poster - you may find disabling sound makes a huge difference to performance, especially in larger groups. ______________________________________________

I love the idea - a mode in the esc menu for wire frame and still have the hideen line removal working otherwise it will get very hard to see what is going on.
but i think your frame rate will take a massive hit.

The 'lag' is basically down to the eve-network. The servers cannot keep up with whats going on.

Exactly, Avon, thanks.
Hidden line removal for sanity.. yes! I would imagine the frame rate would go up somewhat too. ;)

CCP has said from the beginning of EVE that they will not allow anyone to play in wireframe mode

Graphics are stored client side, I'm sure someone could find a way to modify textures/shading/backgrounds so they were less complicated.
This would be a bannable offense.

You are correct, yet more accurately it's getting said bits between the client and the tables of the database(s).

From what I know, part of the problem with lag is client side. Its seems to me quite a few people don't get massive lag like others. The lag due to server and distances I thought was not the major factor just yet.
I also remember some talk about a 'strategic' type view in eve in large fleet battles.

Arud, someone did a test on Chaos (when it was around) and they edited the models to be "nothing". the frame rate increase dramatilcally.
I would say, having played this game for nearly 2 years now, that 90% of the lag I experience is client side. If CCP can provide me with an option to remove the overdrawn sprites that I never see to prove me wrong I would pay double my subscription.
When wingmates report 25 fps and I only report 1fps, and the only difference is our hardwar (indeed, I have a better connection than they do) then I must call your defence of the mechanics of eve to be incorrect.

CCP stated months ago, that they would not provide an option for "wireframe play", as it detracts from the game that they, the devs, have created.
As for editing the .stuff files, that counts as modification of the game files, and is bannable under the EULA.

I have had moments where my graphics card has 'lost' the space box environment. Putting everything on a white background. Which is scary and interesting at the same time.

If you think you can do a better job, go find yourself a datacentre to host a box, get a copy of Visual Studio, and STFU.

Detracts from the game... I pity the poor player above with 1fps... here's an idea.. if the client detects its framerate dropping to the point that it 'detracts from the game' perhaps they should automatically drop to wireframe. :)

Doh. As the person who mentioned it already said.
All I wanted to know was is there a wire frame option (NO) and would it decrease lag (Possibly).
Can anyone point me to a thread that covers why turning sound off can help so much?

True. However, my framerate never drops below 45.
IMHO the absolute majority of perceived lag in Eve comes from network... ahem... issues.

Uh I don't quite get your problems here.
I'm currently running my computer off my back up video card. Which is a Geforce 2 Ti, 64 megabyte card...because my Geforce FX 5600's fan took a crap and the GPU fried.
I don't have any lag issues at all in Eve, and the GF2 Ti card is very low end tech.
So if you're having trouble running this game...I might suggest upgrading that 486DX33 you're running to something a bit closer to modern.

Out of interest how does CCP know you've edited your textures/models if they're client side? Is there a checksum/hash created from your client resource files or something that's sent back with each session? Or.. wouldn't they know at all?

Just set "lower quality/better perfomance" options in videocard driver settings.
