Knowing my luck there's probably already a thread two posts down but I did look, honest guv!
Currently I'm running 2 chars in Minmatar space in a typhoon (minnie spec'd) and a mega (gallante spec'd). I find missions quite effective in isk grinding but dull so my aim is to do them quicker if possible. I usually loot/salvage afterwards as despite trying not to I just can't leave a can unopened
After some reading I was going to upgrade to tengus (cross training needed) as this seemed to be the favored ship nowdays and the scourge bonus is ok with angels.
Then I read some comments by people who said that for hi-sec the drake was just as good as the tengu, which made some sense. Then I read some stuff which said the maelstrom is the best ship to run against angels and is tempting because it's about a quarter of the price of a tengu.
So know I'm confused and would appreciate your input. I've ruled out marauders as I understand it's better to use the racial ship (e.g. vargur = angels) but would take ages to get the gallante char into one.

If you want to rule out marauders, you can skill towards the machariel, which is way more effective than a tengu. If thats too expensive for you, a maelstrom is better than a phoon for low skilled pilots. Forget gallente entirely, the damage profile is bad vs angels and railguns are crap.

I would get a Maelstrom first as it should do much better than the Typhoon. Then train for a Machariel and/or Vargur. Vargur does fine against any rats in Level 4 missions.

As a fellow Angel hunter I must say that I am very happy with my Maelstrom. 800's with 3 RF gyros and 2 T2 Tracking enhancers give you the range and damage to chew through missions. The only thing that holds you back is moving her big ass from point A to B.
You've got enough mid slots for a forgiving tank, too. The only time i've warped out is the bonus room of AE4. I didn't have the range to kill all the towers first, so by the time I finished off the last cruiser the BS's started making solid hits.
But two ships mean you have one for range and one up close..
