I read the instructions, but . . .
I've wasted 3 so far. I have some ideas about what went wrong but I'm not sure I got it all. I've been launching from about 5000 km. With my skills I have a velocity of 3000 m/s and a flight time of 1920 s. (5760 km?)
Basically I launch and nothing happens except the probe disappears. ??? I kind of expected to see something in the scan window some time, like at least after 32 minutes, but so far I see no changes in the scan window at any time.
To line up on the moon I put the ship box inside the moon selection box. I don't have the camera offset. Any problems there?
First launch I left the system and on the second I went into a station while waiting.
For the third launch, which I did before DT, I haven't left the system but I have cloaked. Does that disconnect the probe?
Anyway, right now I'm closing on the moon, cloaked, to get ready for the 4th launch, which will be made un-cloaked. I plan to launch at 1000 meters if I can get that close. I'm at 4867 right now.
Any relevant suggestions?

You don't need to be that close to launch them. You do need to stay insystem, at the end of it's timer your moon scanner will pop up with results on the resources that moon has. It will only do it when the probes timer runs out. It doesn't need to hit the moon, it just needs to be going towards it. And yes you have the method right, aim towards moon and keep going to ensure your launch will be straight since the survey probes are like bombs. Then launch and wait. Be aware though that the only places those moon resources can be extracted is a .3 system or below and you need a pos to do it. Most moons are not worth anchoring a pos on.

Thank you very much. That's exactly what I needed to know.
What range do you usually launch from?

Click on each type of Moon Probe for info on amount of time needed to complete scan. Depending on the type of Probe used, it can be less than 5 minutes up to 40 minutes or more to get result.
Also being cloaked shouldn't interfere with the scanning process, just have to de-cloak to launch probes.

When you land on-grid to the moon, click the moon and click the approach button. When you're moving full speed towards the moon, launch your probe. Fly to the other moons and launch probes on all of them (you can have multiple probes going at the same time.) If the moon is barren, it won't return results, otherwise it will show up in the moon scan window. Highsec and w-space moons are barren. Moon mining is a lowsec/0.0 activity. A session change will clear your results (docking or changing systems.)

That's not true. The recent patch made it so you don't need charters in 0.4, but the moon harvesting array still needs lower than 0.4 (i.e. 0.3 and lower.)

nothing really, its only of use if you were to put in pos to moon mine. And if its a. 3 or below system they probably didn't put a pos there because its not profitable.

Not always true, but it is worth doing the math for the whole process from mining -> complex reactions. The bigger issue is someone coming along with their dreads ready to steal your math.
