I never played it but I belive at the time it was bigger than eve (as in eve back then not today) and I am not saying eve would not be here if it never closed they were quite differnt games but when it closed we got thousands of new players almost instantly which helped to sustain eve, anywya what was its name?

I think you are referring to Earth&Beyond.

freelancer was a good game and was not a mmorg you can still play it today although dated, I was playing that game (single player) when I got an email to play eve (beta subscribers got 2 weeks free) but I had never remebered playing eve beta but feelancer convinced me to play, after a while I remmber my eve beta experience it was a buggy piece of crap, some still say we are still in beta :)

Edited by: Manipulator General on 21/03/2011 02:24:10 Earth and Beyond announced its closure in March of 2004. The server stayed open for about 6 months, but many left after the closure was announced.
And yes, you can play it these days.

Apart from the fact it was never "larger" then EVE, yea, E&B had "walking on station" already back then

If it's the game I'm thinking of, it was more like "running in stations" and a very poor job of it too.

Developed by Westwood Studies (of CNC fame) but published by EA (Games).
It's important to note that this was the time EA was sucking up all it's developers and trying to rebrand them as EA Games. Lots of classic franchises were destroyed and many big names were turned to dust. Maxis was one of the few exceptions that retained it's identity.

Just a side note for what it is worth:
This was also at the time when EAs stock was starting to do exceptionally well.

Earth and Beyond closed in 2004 IIRC.
I remember it because a load of the players joined Eve and formed Celestial Horizon. They then spent months whining about "griefing" as EnB was a cuddly bear-shaped game. Most left, some found a spine and stayed. Not many but some.

Yes.

EA bought them out, or in some way took control of the thing. Then it went **** up, and was never the same.
