With all due respect you're stating an opinion, not a fact, therefore your argument is invalid.

Reviews are opinions. Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one. Well, except for Amarr peeps. They hatch from slime eggs. |

Touche To say that one game is better than another game is an opinion. To use that opinion to base an argument on - that advertising buys scores - is therefore invalid.
It is also untrue. Advertising revenue funds the operation of a magazine, it does not dictate editorial policy. In the same way magazines market games, but they do not dictate game design.
The FACT is that only exclusivity 'buys' coverage and as a consequence the irony is that editorial coverage negates the need for advertising. By way of an example, if Mag A runs an exclusive review of FPS 3, the publisher will probably advertise more in Mag B in order to cover all bases. I'm sure some websites/mags will offer scores as part of a coverage deal, but never in my personal experience have I heard of any instances. Call me naive... I probably am.
If you want my OPINION, Doom 3 >> Ridd1ck. But, hey, just my opinion |

Never noticed the adverts in FHM....

I think some of you people's views on gaming magazines may be a bit off. For example swedish PC Gamer decided not to review HL2 at Valve in the US to be able to have the review in their november magazine or whatever when Valve requested that they should put a HL2 picture on the cover. Instead they waited until the game came out and then reviewed it.
Anyway yeah I feel that lots of magazines are hyping EVE _a lot_, especially PC Zone and swedish PC Gamer. And that's good :)

To be honest, despite the bugs, why shouldn't they?
CCP have done a great job on the game. True, there are some REALLY annoying bits in the game (name-sorting hangers and cans being the latest), but it's very playable.
Aside from the loss of CCP's net access last night for a brief time and tiscali deciding to do something at their end for 15 minutes the other night, I've had no problems since the latest patch - not one CTD. Before that, I've had regular CTDs.
So CCP are listening and they're working to solve the bugs...

I have been playing for a week. I have encountered no bugs, and only seen the server crash twice both within an hour last night (less than 5 minuted each time). A reviewer wouldn't have spent much more time playing than I and probably wouldn't notice either. And really people this game is FLAWLESS compared to WoW, EQ (EQ Mac would go down unannounced for over 5 hours at a time on peak Saturday hours), EQ2, etc. etc. so keep the whining to a minimum. ------------------------------------- You are all worthless, and weak.

Stuart Campbell would disagree. He's written for every mag going and as a result of whistleblowing the cash for scores method employed by certain large publishers can now no longer find work in that industry. Or so he says.

I never understood why people even pay attention to reviews. It's like watching the movie critics on the news channels.
But, it's good and free (unless it's a marketing stunt, in which case, it's about time) advertizing and people that've never heard of Eve before seeing the review might consider trying it out. And that's always a good thing. If CCP can optimize the servers. And improve the most noticable bugs.

You can't try out every game and you can't watch every movie, so how else do you filter down the number to pick a select few you do have time for?
Yes, a review is just an opinion, but people are guided by opinions all the time. It's one way in which we can attempt to sort the good from the dross, even if the results aren't 100% reliable. If we didn't we'd miss the good stuff from playing/watching all the rubbish.
