I'm just getting started and I doubt I will have a plethora of items to list on the market. I plan to start out just selling modules, salvage goods, and minerals acquired from missions. Once I have a feel of the market and gain a few more skills, I would like to embark on a possible hauling career supplying other systems with goods. Being Caldari, I will mainly be operating out of Jita and it's outlying systems. Any additional tips and advice would be welcome. Thank you.

The ones that DEFINITELY are needed for everyone's profits are broker relations and accounting as they directly impact the amount of isk you spend making your trades, all the others make trading easier. I for one don't use many orders, I don't need 300 available so my trading skills aren't so high .. nor do I use margin trading for personal reasons ;) but other people think margin trading is the best thing ever as it lets them leverage their capital.
In other words start figuring out the skills as you go, trading isn't as cut and dry as flying a ship "must have level X or you wont compete with others."
Other tips .. buy low, sell high, repeat.

for me margin trading is the best skill ever (no I don't make scam buy orders, I do like you say). I buy mission loot in bulk at above buy order prices! (sinq laison) |

A number fo the skills for placing and modifying orders remotely require Trade 4. So I recommend you get that. As far as how many orders you need, I find I sometimes run into the limit at 33. So another level beyond whatever is required for that would likely be good.

Margin trading is essential I think. It has a reputation for being involved in scams but that would be easy to fix if ccp limited the minimum order size based on the collateral. So with margin trading 5 if you wanted an order of 100 you could only have a minimum order size upto 24 units.
The procurement, marketing, visibility etc skills are useful if you are remote trading.

I have skills for 129 slots, and had them at over 40 for at least 4 years. The highest number of slots I _EVER_ simultaneously used was around 20. Normally, I seldom go above 5-6 slots used. I still made 420+ bil in the past year and a half trading. However, I was not "daytrading". MotherSammy has it right - for what the OP plans, a high number of slots is critical.
Then again, Trade/Retail both at L4 don't really take that long to train. Also, as others have pointed out, you want Trade L4 ASAP anyway because it's a prerequisite for some skills you really, really, REALLY want to train.
P.S. The most urgent of those skills is actually Accounting, IMO. _

Strictly speaking, you don't need any skills beyond the basic Trade skill.
If you wanted to sit in station (Jita) and just "buy low, sell high", you could do that.
And, assuming your profit margins were high enough that you didn't really care about taxes and fees, you'd be a happy and profit-making camper.
What the bulk of the trade skills allow you do is trim costs, trade remotely (beyond the station) and increase the number of market orders you can operate at the same time.
So, give some thought to where and how you want to trade...and choose the skills that support that strategy. -------------------------------------------------------- This space For Rent. |
