yea I know we can't do that yet CQ is still solo.
I'm assuming people will all see whatever they put into their own folders, and not what other people see.
Will CCP be o.k. with that or will they rescind their acceptance of the new toy?
Just wondering.

Lots of threads about this but never a CCP reply, so I assume the silence is an acceptance of sorts. It is harmless fun anyway but strictly speaking forbidden.
Since some data is streaming to the screen (updates on sov, new pilots, etc) I am still hoping that more up to date videos and graphics will appear streaming as well later on.
Also: Amarr Victor you dirty ape
EDIT: http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&nbid=2418 New dev blog says its ok.

Disclaimer: I don't know exactly what happens code-wise, since I don't have client's source, but as a software engineer I can give you my tech-assumption.
Until the devblog was published, people used to modify CQ videos directly inside EVE's installation folder. That is considered unsafe and CCP revealed that they have an alternative source of the "BIK" videos that will show in the client - in the cache folder like described in the devblog.
The game client itself will look inside that folder and add those files to you internal "playlist". That means that your client is doing all the work and rendering. In this case, what happens in your client will stay in your client. When someone else enter your CQ, his client will start the rendering procedures for the screen and activate his own CQ video playlist from his own local folder(s). No information is sent about the video you play to the server or to other clients.
It's similar to your in-game jukebox. You can add any song to it or use EVE's music while you are in CQ or Incarna Establishments in the future. That doesn't mean that everyone else will hear what your jukebox is playing.
TL;DR It's a local setting of the client. The client renders on CQ screen what it can grab from your video folder(s) - each client on its own. |

That's pretty much it.
Now, what we'd need is an exploit in the player to inject code that allows us to connect the client to some video-feeding server and watch from there, so CCP changes the code and implements it themselves, so we get EvE TV !!!
I mean, seriously ... that idea isn't even far fetched. Implement it and ppl WILL use the feature and new businesses will arise. :) Or like ... watching "EvE is real"-Videos in the CQ ... that's something even i'd do. Feeling, baby ! :D
(I don't even have a TV IRL and i really can't understand why ppl would sit in front of their screen,) (looking at their avatar who sits in front of his screen ................................................................) (BUT i love the possibility nonetheless :) |

Probably not that hard for static videos. A Windows app that runs in the background, periodically checks up with a server somewhere and downloads new bik files to put into your cache folder as they become ready, and therefore display them on your CQ. I've no idea about streaming though, that could be a different kettle of fedos.....
Would be kinda handy PR/New thing for big alliances I guess (that actually wanted to use CG like this...). Imagine sitting on your sofa seeing propaganda from your alliance about what your enemies are doing, upcoming events, fleets etc...
