I've noticed many visual artifacts, especially on Stations and Stargates, that appear to be caused by insufficient precision in the Z-buffer. I see polygons popping through eachother and I see really bad zig-zags when two polygons intersect with eachother. These sort of things usually happen with a 16 bit Z-buffer, but my GeForce 4200 is capable of using a 24 bit Z-buffer. What precision buffer does Eve use, and can I change it?

I remember this problem with World War II Online, in such cases it was critical as a lot of the game depended on manual visual targetting, as WW2 weaponry did not auto-target!
They managed to solve it, and removed the "scrolling zig-zag" effect, I'm sure it can be done in EVE.

Yeah I wold liek to have a CCP take a look at this topic, z-fighting is the only thing that makes me go 'ewww' when I approach stations and such :)

This is one thing that annoys me about EVE... it looks like the models are poorly put together but it is as you say a z-buffer problem...
I've tried messing around with my graphics card settings but haven't had any luck improving it. -------------------------------------------

I get this a lot - it seems much worse on Minmatar stations due to their complexity. You get lots of black stripes flashing across it, and black triangles against all the edges.
All these disappear when you get very close.
I've tried every display setting I've got (ATI Radeon 9700 pro) but can't fix it.
Has anyone filed a bug report with screen shots?

I don't know how to file bug reports with screenshots. I'll start trying to collect some screenshots though.

CCP are already aware of this problem. There is nothing you can do to solve it, it has to be done by them
Read more about it here: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=21957 and a long one here: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=19599

Well at least we hope they're aware of it, I've told them enough times and posted enough, but as yet they've not offcially reconised this as a problem.

hello all if you go to prefs file in the cache folder and add advancedDevice=1 in a new line, start up eve and go to the graphics tab there should be some new options and you can change the Z-buffer thingy higher than 16 hope this helps some people...sorry if i break ur eve totaly n stuff

Put the line advanceDevice=1 in your prefs file which is found in the cache folder.
This will give you extra options in the in game graphics menu.
If you set an option that your card doesnt support, EVE may keep crashing. Just change line to =0 to turn off extra options, run EVE then quit and change back to =1 again to start again.
Make sure it is the first line in the prefs file also. When I changed mine months ago it woundnt work unless you put advancedDevice=1 on the first line for some reason, dont know if this is still required.

this works perfectly for me, with one exception
some stations show up what looks like texture jitter.
specifically this is true for oris and theology counsel in amarr, i would think its those to paticular models that has issues, since nothing else gives me trouble.
even the paranoid has real enemies...
