Is it possible for a frigate to take down battleship sized rats in null sec in a reasonable amount of time?
If so, which one would you use?
I would imagine an assault frigate, but could combat inties stand a chance? --- DIE - EVE-O's SADOMASICHIST I WHO HAVE NOTHING! |

Yes, stealth bomber on Serpentis belt rats. Whether joining Goons or Test just to rat in their space is worth it is up to you.

i've heard of t2 fit rifters killing the 500k ones pretty easily. But just use a cruiser.

What cruiser would you recommend? --- DIE - EVE-O's SADOMASICHIST I WHO HAVE NOTHING! |

SB
T2 launchers, javelin torps, range rigs = more then 100 km range
Snipe snipe and run from frigs No tank needed at those distances...

I have been successfully doing this in a daredevil. Good dps with blasters and nice signature/speed tanking abilities.
On the cheap side, a destroyer works fine provided you can get beneath the optimal range of the large rats. Otherwise you'll become a wreck in no time.

Stealth Bomber works, but you have to pay attention if a frigate comes along. Also bombers are so bloody paper thin that it's risk on it's own.
I personally use the ishkur for it. Drones help a along way when it comes to frigates and you can engage the whole belt at the same time (no need to first kill the frigates etc). I use the ishkur for the BS and drones for the frigs. When the frigs are dead you can order the drones to help you with the BS. Takes about 2min to take down a 500-700k BS and usually not a single hit on you.
The annoying part with frigate size is the cargo and the lack of a salvager. Yes, you can fit a salvager, but...it gimps it...if you want to have a cloak...and you do. Combat inties (specially the blasteranis) make almost the same dps as a normal AF so there shouldn't be a problem.

Edited by: Seraph Castillon on 28/03/2011 13:47:03 Ishkur, Taranis, ... basicly any high dps frig with enough speed and/or rep power to stay alive.
Like others said though: if it's making money you are after then you might want to look past the traditional frigates. I wouldn't go for a T1 cruiser either. They make for too much of an easy target. Everyone will want to have a go at you.

You can easily use a bomber and you don't have to do it from 100km range. If you fit a MSE you can easily still sig tank the damage, just have to stay away from the frigs.
Also, you don't have to join any alliance.. The joy of a SB, is they will never catch you unless you screw up. I rat up my sec status from time to time out in Pure Blind and locals don't tend to like me much cause we shoot them often.
Rat up sec status in their space and kill them in it..

Done it with a Blarpy vs Guristas. I think the best BS I could take were the 1 million ones, any higher and I coulden't break the tank. I tanked with an AB and a Gisti B booster, never had an issue, with the one exception, iirc, of a pair of elite battle cruisers. But as other posters have noted, ratting like this is not exactly fast. |

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions!
I haven't made up my mind yet, so many places to go.
Would ratting in a PvP fit be viable or am I stuck with gtfo only? I'm liking the daredevil idea a lot. --- DIE - EVE-O's SADOMASICHIST I WHO HAVE NOTHING! |

TBH, The only reason to fight rats in null is if you hunt for faction spawns in many systems after DT, etc. Not worth it for the bountys, just lewts and maybe a little pew pew
