Pretty much topic intended.
Been thinking about this after seeing the fanfest 'future vision' video and am wrestling with the whole concept and the key question I am struggling with the answer for is whether those who have not been exposed to the EVE universe will understand or care about the connection.
How do you guarantee the depth of involvement New Eden will need from the Dust playerbase? How do you attribute meaning and significance to winning and losing in Dust enough to make the players care about the outcome, other than the need to win itself? What is going to make the Dust player base consistent? If the intention is for console owners to be the Dust playerbase, how many Dust players will be needed to make the whole thing work? And more importantly for the Dust players; how many contracts will need to be in perpetual circulation and available for this consistency to exist? What happens if we do not issue any contracts to Dust players? Will they have nothing to do? And if 'no', what? Offline play? What if that is more fun than serving the needs of New Eden?
I know there's a lot of questions there, but they all relate to Dust players connecting with the game on a personal level - will they?
I question this, especially if Pod pilots can order orbital strikes on their own hired guns, for fun. (Which is great for us, but sad panda for them, and will no doubt result in streams of rage-quitting 'I am gonna go and play CoD - screw this!' moments...

The DUST-EVE interaction is SUPPOSED to be designed in such a way as to be able to have either one of them work perfectly well without the other even existing. Keyword "supposed".
How can one do that ?
Well, for starters, whatever any person does on one side WILL NOT directly translate "as is" on the other side, at least not initially.
There will also most certainly be plenty of computer-generated "fake interactivity" from NPCs acting as if they were players on both sides.
Basically, from the EVE side, you feed in funds, maybe some items (and maybe the occasional firepower, but not from the start), and from the other side, EVENTUALLY, you get a "result". This result will be partially random, partially depending on how much you "helped" from the EVE side, and partially depending on how the related DUST operations developed.
From the DUST side, you get bids on ops, maybe bonus items, maybe even later on requests for airstrikes or orbital strikes. Those bids you get (and the provided matTriel) are partially from EVE players, but most likely mostly from fake player NPC sources. The available scenarios will be partially based on what EVE players request, but again, most of them will probably be randomly generated based on however the EVE NPC universe is supposed to be handling things.

I hope orbital strikes won't be a part of Dust, because random death that you obviously don't have any control of whatsoever is not fun.

It is fun when you're the one that's in control of the orbital strikes..

Are you sure?
To me, it seems about as challenging and entertaining as mining or sitting at a POS waiting for it to go into reinforced mode while talking about drying paint on TS.

Dust will only be popular if they design a more awesome tank than the toy-tank thingy they showed in the video...

CCP already said there will be zero direct pew pew interaction between dust and eve past some as yet to be defined economic consequenses when you take a planet.
