I've recently changed to Ubuntu and would like to be able to run EVE. I followed the guide posted here, but I'm having a problem getting it to run: the splash screen comes up, but won't go any further. It just claims it has encountered a serious problem and closes. I don't know enough about Linux to be able to do much to get it working, so I would appreciate any help anyone could offer.

The guide here is imo quite outdated, should have an updated.
For me on ubuntu all i did was to make sure that i use the newest Wine devel releas 1.3.17 atm and just to do a clean install on this. it worked preaty well.
Only issue migth be noot seeing the euela, but its easely fixed by adding Corefonts with wintricks.
Try to uninstal wine from Software center ot run "sudo apt-get remove wine" from terminal then delete your .wine folder located in your home folder. then if not already addod follow guide here to get accsess to the dev repo from wine http://www.winehq.org/download/deb
wich will give you accsess to the 1.3.17 version of wine.
The run the eve installer again. if you have problems with eula, run winetricks "located in the "wine" folder in your Application menue. finde corefonts and install them.
Hope this helps.

Been planning on another update to the old info sticky, but CCP has been fracked up with the new/vs./old forums tricks, so I've been holding off. We do need a new update and as soon as this forum cruft is sorted I'll try and get the sticky from here updated properly for the new forums.
But in general, wine 1.3.17 + winetricks to install vcrun2005 and vcrun2008 (for update patches), ms-ttf fonts (from ubuntu-restricted-extras) + manual copy of arial.ttf to the /home/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts folder and then the edit the user.reg file (located normally in the /home/.wine/ folder changes for directx:
(the following applies to the nvidia cards specifically to use HDL and such...ati users feel free to add that set.) ----------------------------------- Software\\Direct3d] "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl" "MaxFragmentUniforms"="1024" "MaxVaryings"="52" "MaxVertexUniforms"="1024" "Multisampling"="enabled" "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" "PixelShaderMode"="enabled" "VertexShaderMode"="enabled" "VideoMemorySize"="your cards' memory size goes here." --------------------------------------------------------
That all done, EVE SHOULD work just fine.

Well at this point -wry grin- things are sticking the way they are. (no don't look at the forums behind the curtain over there that have no security issues...ducks. )
But as to a FAQ, I'd recommend using eveevelopedia's base at this point and add/update information there. Forum stickies get old/locked/etc, but the wiki is more "update-able" ifn' ya know what I mean?
