It's not new, myself used this as an exploit very long ago in UO with pets guarding doors so you could attack someone without faction lost, but if well done it can be a nice feature and not exploitable ;)
A good feature for drones, is a "protect asset" function, you select a cargo, get out your drones, and say "protect my cargo".
The cargo would have then a little green tab like it's yours, and your drones would fly around it.
When someone try to take an item from your cargo, it would be considered an attack, and drones would retaliate without penalty for the owner of the drones whatever the sec level of the system.
The owner could even leave the roid belt, the drones would continue to do them job of protection till the cargo poof or they get destroyed by npc pirates or players.
In a high sec system, opening fire on the drones would be still considered an offense by CONCORD, and an attack against the owner of the drones who could then open fire on the griefer.
In a low sec system, that would force griefers to come up in numbers and put up a fight and win it before getting the reward.
That would push out of the game the little griefers in indy coming to steal the good peoples wealth, anyway those guys are****gots who bring nothing good into the game except frustration.

Myself don't need it, my corp never mine in systems higher than 0.0 security level, and I am the security escort, and if someone came with an indy to steal our cargo, I can tell you that his biomass would be in the trophee section of our corp hangar.
But that would give a new fun function to drones.

The current situation seems to be a great way to force noobe players to work together, even if they want to play solo outside of a corp.
If you have got to the stage of owning a swarm of combat drones, it maybe time for you to take an indy flyer under your wing so that you can work together.

a GUARD ME feature on the drones would be much more useful, for miners and combatants alike. ------------------------------------------- If you kill them, they will die!
Sport the war, war support The sport is war, total war When victory's really a massacre. The final swing is not a drill It's how many people I can kill! |

"a GUARD ME feature" or better yet a guard gang feature. This could give a team of players a great deal of supporting cover at very high speed.
Can you imagine the shock on the face of a BattleShip player if a swamp of 50 or 60 drones headed his way the second he takes out a member of a gang.
