I'm working on skills for level 3 missions in a Myrmidon. One issue I haven't really considered is which size drones to use. With 75 bandwidth I could use 2 Ogres, 2 Hornets and a Hobgoblin. Should I try to use all of my bandwdith? I've rarely used more than one type of drone at a time... Are ther advantages/disadvantages I should consider? What strategies do you use in picking drones?

Edited by: Estel Arador on 01/04/2011 11:44:20 My strategy is to always use medium sized drones, but is kinda the most lazy strategy possible
Drone sizes are essentially like gun sizes in that light drones (/small guns) work well against frigates, medium drones (/medium guns) work well against cruisers, and heavy drones (/large guns) work well against battleships.
In your case, for level 3 missions with no battleships, I wouldn't bring heavy drones. Instead bring a full flight of medium drones and a full flight of small drones. Use the small drones first to kill frigates, once the frigates are gone, call them back and launch the medium drones to help with the cruiser-sized targets.

I used medium drones, supplemented by railguns. Recall the mediums and launch scouts if you're attacked by webber/scram frigates.

5 medium drones is your best bet for several reasons:
(1) They all reach their target at the same time
(2) They're faster than the ogres
(3) They can still hit most small targets (if needed) and usually do enough damage to down the large targets you'll find in L3s, so they offer ultimate flexibility as combat drones go.
Remember that Ogres lose a lot of applied damage to travel time. I'd keep a flight of small drones in your hold as backup for small things that are too slippery for you, and a bank of guns for chasing down large, slow targets that are too tough for the drones alone if needed. ---

I would recommend a set of medium drones, and backup light drones in case you end up going against some fast elite frigs. _______________________ Find out whome to vote for in the CSM. Match your answers with the candidates. |

I was hoping this would be an answer since I haven't trained beyond those yet anyway, and micromanaging individual drones sounds painfull and inneffective (like using ungrouped guns).
I should have exclusively T2 in my low and medium slots, but my high slots are weak, so I'll really be depending on drone DPS (definately plan to use the drone link augmentor, and adapt my strategy as needed).

Be aware, myrmidon has no weapon bonuses, so don't feel obligated to fit railguns (which are probably the 2nd worst weapon in the game, right after blasters.) Popular on myrms are projectile weapons because they use no capacitor and are good weapons. You can group different sizes of drones, and doing the ogre-mix is the better raw DPS, but you lose out to travel time and no appropriate targets. As the others, I much prefer the full rack of med/light. Consider your ewar options too... a web can help your drones pop those close frigs if you've got the room and capacitor for it. Make sure you've got a good PVE tank, ideally resisting the damage types your opponent deals out, and use drones that your opponent is vulnerable to.

5 mediums is amazing, especially t2s. If you plan on tackling big things i would go with ogres. From experience I know that 5 hammerhead I's are pretty good against the gurista rats I find in Caldari space while mining. o7 -sam |

I use my Myrm with 3 sentries, 5 hammers and 5 hobgoblins, but it depends on the mission as well.
When groups are far away, get aggro with guns and release sentries who fire out far (i.e. wardens). Till they come near, you already have killed some ships with your sentries and railguns. Depending on what kind of rat comes in close, pull in sentries and release hammers/hobgoblins.
When i tried mixing the drone group (heavies, medium, scout) different flight times/speed of the drones makes it kinda ineffective, as those ogres are slow as hell.
Hope that helps.

Yes - if you're running missions flying what is primarily a drone boat:
See the Eve Player Guide: Drones.
1) Carry Mediums and Lights each in groups of 5 of the same type. You can organize groups for your drones by right clicking on a drone or highlighted group of drones in the bay. Use Lights against frigates, Mediums against cruisers.
2) Carry Drones that match the vulnerabilities of your Rats - See the EVE Player Guide On Missions.. The Damage types the drones do is; Amarr - EM, Caldari - Kinetic, Gallente - Thermal and Minmatar - Explosive. If you don't have some of each type most rats have a primary or secondary damage type of Thermal so use Gallente.
3) You also have 3 different Drone Upgrades that you can fit. Drone Link Augmentor I, Omnidirectional Tracking Link I and Drone Navigation Computer I. There is a fourth but it's only for Carriers and such.
4) In the upper left hand corner of your drones window on your HUD is the drone settings - set this to focus fire. I also prefer Passive for missions as I want to direct my drones targets - not having them pick them out themselves ... Once you get them going though - all you have to do is direct fire on one of your targets - and the drones will engage that target.
5) The drones usually do what you tell them to. Have your drone window open so that you can see all the Drones In Space - and watch their damage read outs - if one starts taking damage - pull it back into the bay and launch a replacement if you have one.
6) You can also train the skills Remote Armor Repair Systems and Remote Hull Repair Systems then mount a Small Remote Armor Repairer and a Small Remote Hull Repairer. This will Let you fix your own drones. If you're only going to fix your own drones - the small ones will do.
7) If you are working with other ships - you can use the drone commands Guard and Assist. Now ... iirc ... Guard will keep the drones by you but they will defend another ship if it is attacked - while Assist will send the drones off to that other ship where it will help that ship attack. This Assist function also has the benefit of getting those drones in the vicinity of the other ship - where you can Abandon them - and the other ship can scoop them to it's drone bay and take control. Thus allowing you to swap drones or replace them for a ship that has all it's drones shot up. Thus - say you have a RR Logistics Ship like an Exequror - it can carry spare drones to swap with the combat ship - repair the shot up drones - and then swap them back for more shot up drones. Now here - if you are also going to be repairing other ships - you might want to fit the medium remote repair modules.

One thing that I keep forgetting is that it takes a little time even for T2 drones to kill a frigate. While they are working on that one frigate, you're on your own. If there are a lot of frigates in the mission, you're going to end up killing most of them yourself, no matter what drones you use.
After a lot of switching back and forth, I ended up settling on Hobgoblins for the Myrmidon, but you really need to see what works best for your style of mission combat.
Basically, I don't think there is a 'one size fits all' answer to the question.

Right because of this you should have good drone skills (like drone-interfacing for increased damage)and use Tech II drones. Send the drones against the frigates and use your other (bigger) guns to take out destroyers and cruisers. You can also keep a set of long-range and short-range ammunition to switch if necessary. If you have a mission with many frigates attacking you, you might consider using rockets.

Get Drone navigation to 5 if you plan on using heavies. I am hoping that by the end of patching my Ogre will have returned to the drone bay. And as stated, don't use heavies in a frig fight.
