Edited by: Kora Zilesti on 04/04/2011 00:13:21 In order to give appropriate terminology to this plague, I have termed it "SUCKS". Severe Unavoidable Combat Knuckle-under Syndrome. SUCK Syndrome has affected thousands of EVE players, and is characterized by a decrease in testicular fortitude, acute lack of willingness to PvP, the obsessive use of neutral repair in every empire conflict, and a greatly increased tendency to only engage pilots that have absolutely no chance of winning. Advanced stages of SUCK may also include compulsive fitting of warp-stabs and extreme paranoia.
So given my clinical analysis of this medical issue, I've come to refer with you, my colleagues, in order to get to the bottom of this.
No longer are there ships in lowsec asteroid belts that aren't aligned for warp. No longer are there true solo pilots or small gangs roaming the great space-plains of EVE. No longer are there fleets without cloaked scouts or neutral alts watching every entry point or route of travel for three systems. No longer are there 1v1 challengers without four guardians and two bump-Machariels waiting to warp in or undock.
What happened, EVE? I remember this game not being full of SUCK once.

Darwinism Happened. People adapted to achieve victory or survival with the least possible input of resources whilst achieving the greatest potential gains.
You are the last of your dying sub-species of EVE player, and you will be preserved for posterity as a lesson to others who refuse to adapt to changing circumstances.

I didn't say "lowsec miners." When you warp into a belt and there's a pilot there who's equally matched to you, and he instawarps because you're not a 100% certain kill, that's SUCK.
I'm not interested in popping miners and ratters. I got over the whole 'killboard stuffing' obsession a long time ago.

OK I'll bite. He insta warps because:
- you might have a cyno and drop OVER 9000 capships on him
- you may have friends on route either in system or next door
- becuse of falcon, or rr alts
- it takes too long to kill him/you (nerf buffer tanks) and in that time help will arrive
- he is in a belt. If ratting he is pve fit so will die to your pvp setup. Plus he has to tank rats as well as you
- you engaged him. Therefore you thought you could win. From his perspective, what do you know that he doesn't?
- Refitting a ship is a pain if the local market is sucky
- killboards.

And the fact that he has to be so rightfully paranoid is a very significant sign that SUCK syndrome has taken a heavy toll. Nobody's willing to be a gambler when it comes to PvP anymore. Not said pilot in a belt, and not the million and one pilots that would love to engage him with a 30-man fleet.

- Yes, there are. Bait Drakes. - Yes, there are. Change the environment, find another part of space or another group of players that do this. - And you say THEY are paranoid. - Then stop fighting against RR-ers and find yourself another target. hello morons,
stop talking about "adaptation."
the reason we "adapt" to real life is that we can only change the system so much; after we have reached the limits of environment manipulation (i.e., making the environment "easier" to win in), we need to change ourselves.
virtual reality is 100% controllable. We don't have to adapt to it; the developers can make it anything they want.
the OP is not UNABLE to "adapt" - he just wants the game to improve. Stop acting as if EVE is something outside of human control. It could be a much better game than it is now.

Just because everybody's been forced to adapt to Eve PVP in this way (see: NO MOMMA I WONT PVP WITHOUT BLOBS) doesn't mean it's a good thing.
Yes, people are being forced more and more to be super paranoid, never engage without crazy good odds, or simply to not engage. This is in response to how PVP has evolved with the introduction of T3's, warp to zero, T3 bs's (think abaddon), HACS, probably most important recons, and the prevalence of capital ships. Was it inevitable? Probably. Is that how people are playing now and how they probably will play for the forseable future? Likely.
Again, is it a GOOD thing for this game? Absolutely not. _______________________________________________ "If you want to taste the ground, feel free to attack." - Kenshin Himura

I think it's a case of people being bad at the game and not wanting to fight as opposed to thinking I have a dirty trick up my sleeve. I often solo in 0.0 in an interceptor, my alliance has no capitals, I'm solo and they know it based on their intel and scouting me, searching me on a killboard shows that I'm solo all of the time when I'm not in an alliance gang, and I've never used cynos, not that I can even use them on this character.
I think the problem is that there is no incentive to fight. Theres no reason for them to try and remove me apart from keeping them running their anomalys in one system and locking it down for a bit, they can't blob or camp me in based on my ship choice, which is the only pvp they often are capable of. The only way to get to these players is to use AFK cloaking, which isn't really my type of PvP since I prefer to be agressive and roam, and also look at how many forum whines there is about it...
Go to some regions like Esotoria and Impass, theres like 80 active guys in the entire region, but they dock up and won't fight 1 woman in an interceptor. I really wish there was some kind of small gang mechanic that you could do that would encourage people to fight you. However there is none. ---

This. PvP combat should be more like warfare and less like e-honor duels.
Strategy in warfare means maximizing your chances for victory while minimizing your opponent's. I see nothing wrong with this.

Yep that's basically the entire issue. There really isn't an incentive to come out and defend your territory except for the lulz if you manage to get a kill. Sure, someone seasoned like myself will grab a ship with some buddies and go out and pew the pew, but the average joe will just dock up and wait it out. The only real lasting harm you can do to an area is to sit in a system afk cloaked all day long so people don't mine/rat. That would cause their industrial/whatever system indexes to lower. THAT costs them a lot, but again.... gotta afk cloak with some log offed buddies to even catch them if they do come out.
There was a thread about this not long ago trying to outline some ideas on how to make incentives for pvp. Among them were CCP awarded medals for killing blows, and other more interesting tools like "Fleet Casting" where you form a fleet and you set it a certain size.. there's a certain number of command ship, logistics, and dps slots to fill, and if all dps are filled, you can't use the logistics slots to put more dps in. This will help cut down blobbing a bit (of course people can use seperate fleets but whatever). Also coupled with this would be the broadcast of your location to other enemy fleets of similar size. This would make it so people would seek like-sized gangs out and intentionally fight them, while trying to build a foundation for blob-free warfare.
But anyways, it's a tricky subject that isn't easily fixed. _______________________________________________ "If you want to taste the ground, feel free to attack." - Kenshin Himura

I was ratting in my Thrasher yesterday, working a bit on my security status, when a Harbinger stumbles upon me at a belt. He starts to lock me from ~30km away and since I have never heard of the SUCK syndrome, I oblige and stay. As expected, my wet-paper Thrasher is promptly in armor and not too long before my hull is getting some good old fashioned kicking. At this point I stop ignoring his lack of a tackling module and warp off, just to be called "pu$$y" in local.
Obviously, he has heard of the SUCK syndrome.

I agree that there should be more gangs out there willing to engage gangs that would be a good challenge BUT I disagree with the first 3 "No longer are there..." statements...
1) Aligning for Warp at a belt means they are not noobs and know the perils of EVE 2) There ARE small gangs roaming, you just need to go out and find them 3) Fleets without cloaked scouts are bad fleets...scounting and recon is part of war and battle...please don't knock people for being smart PvPers who prepare for battle

About 3 years back I was ratting in 0.4 as a noob in my brand new Omen. Heavily involved with 3 NPC cruisers, a Hurricane jumps on my butt and obliterates my Omen. He warp scrambles my pod, and demands ransom. I told him go ahead, make my day, I'll just wake up in a clone vat as I've got no implants. He laughs, and lets me go.
That was my intro to lo-sec and PvP. OP, does that suck enough for you? How many beginning players have similar experiences and carebear it for a year or two skilling up to be able to hold their own in that kind of fight? And then realize Eve is a lot more complicated than being gankbait for some "valiant" solo PvPer?
Players have moved past the romantic ideal of PvP you yearn for, that may have existed 3-9 months after Eve started, but was long gone when I started almost 4 years ago.

But yeah, I agree, there's almost no solo combat left in Eve these days. In fact, most of your points are pretty accurate.

This is particularly true, and has become extremely annoying. Except for the fact that usually people who play this way are so incompetent that you can kill them all anyway.
Protip: The trick to killing ships backed up by logistics is to put heavy neutralizing drones on the logistics while you shoot their highest dps ship. The logistics typically will cap out very fast, and then there are no reps.

I think when they introduced the option to align to celestial objects via the overview, they made it too easy for people to just warp out and escape engagements. prior to this, you had to be knowledgeable to double click and align to an object to warp off, and often times if you were careless, you paid for it. Lessons learned. I also think warp to zero is a fairly big issue with promoting fights as well. yes, the reasoning behind taking out warp to 15 was because most people had regional bookmarks that allowed them to warp to zero anyways, that was taking up gobs of space. yeah sure, that was true. However, being forced to warp to 15 caused a lot of engagements and fun fights that otherwise would not have happened. Not to mention flying a solo BS through enemy territory was super terrifying to say the least. But hey, that was also in the time when blob warfare was something you did to kill buttloads of POS's and not much else. _______________________________________________ "If you want to taste the ground, feel free to attack." - Kenshin Himura

Why would you fight a fight that you KNOW you are going to win? How is that even fun?
It's fun applying knowledge and intelligence to warfare for some people, believe it or not. For morons EVE is not the right game, luckily WOW and many bad clones cater for them.

You know, reading this there seems to be some lack of understanding as to what's going on here. The OP is upset because a certain style of play is becoming scarce. And it is. Small gang PVP is a playstyle that some enjoy. I know I do. I like small gang PVP (less than 10 players) and solo PVP. It happens from time to time that I'll run into another soloer and we'll get an honest to goodness fight out of it. That's how I made a lot of friends who I have gone to explore other games with and enjoyed spending time with.
People have chosen that they like to keep their ships and they want to only gank others, rather than test their skill so a lot of people choose to overwhelm with large blobbing numbers. The issue is, it removes a large quantity of ability from the players who choose to play differently.
You guys saying "suck it up and adapt" should think of it like this: small gang and solo pvp players are forced to play in a world of blobbing. What if large blobs were somehow nerfed to a point where it wasn't a great idea to fly them?

Edited by: Captain Cruncsh on 06/04/2011 12:22:36 LOL, OP your just being ******ed...
for example,
- "No longer are there ships in lowsec asteroid belts that aren't aligned for warp"
Why wouldn't I be aligned? If I'm in an astroid belt ratting and you show up in local why would I let your stupid ass come and kill me?
- "No longer are there true solo pilots or small gangs roaming the great space-plains of EVE"
100% FALSE, I go on small gang roams all the time, you just gotta be smart about it. And I can honestly say thats the most enjoyable part of the game.
- "No longer are there fleets without cloaked scouts or neutral alts watching every entry point or route of travel for three systems."
LOL you mad cause I scouted your 50 man gate camp? Remember I go on small roams and good intel is an essential part of staying alive.
- "No longer are there 1v1 challengers without four guardians and two bump-Machariels waiting to warp in or undock"
Oh ya because in real life fights people never call for back up, their friends never jump in and people always play fair.
What were you expecting to happen? People just got smart. Sounds to me like your a lazy sob who wishes for the world to bend to your will. Sorry theirs no easy button or free wins here. Eve is a tough competitive game and as time goes on people become better and better at it, end of story.

OK, I'd like to address one specific point in the OP.
How many people here - please, be honest, I won't judge you - how many people here, if they were given the opportunity to choose, would honestly choose a battle they had a chance of losing over a battle they had no chance of losing?
Sun-Tzu said "The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the enemy's not coming / But on our own readiness to receive our enemy / Not on the chance of our enemies not attacking / But rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable". He also said "The victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won / Whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory."
Why, honestly, would you choose a battle you could lose over one you could not lose? ----- Andreus Ixiris CEO, Mixed Metaphor

1) I rarely land on someone in a belt who is aligned to warp. Do they run, often, even when we're in the same ship class? Yep. But hey, stuff happens. Should have picked my warp-in distance better, may have gotten a scram on them.
2) I suggest you undock more. I dunno what your idea of "small gang" is, but I see (and am in) gangs of 4-8 people regularly, and am solo (and see, and fight) other solo pilots quite often. Keep in mind, Solo does not mean "1v1". Just because you're alone dosent mean they will be.
3) Scouting is annoying, and yep, probably ruins more potential good fights than it avoids ganks, but meh, with blobbing as prevalent as it is, cant say I blame them.
4) Stop accepting 1v1s in hisec? I have never had a agreed to 1v1 dishonored in losec, and while I dont do many of these, have probably fought in 20 or so.
The game is not perfect for small ship, solo pvp just now... but it sure isnt as bad as youre trying to make it sound.

Having 20 friends in T3s constantly watch your back is not knowledge and intelligence.
That is just doing risk free PvP, which honestly is a waste of time. PvP is about the thrill of fights. Not about "my killboard is better than yours!" I realize now that EvE has become call of duty where all people care about is their KD ratio.
SUCK syndrome sufferers are the same as Campers in FPS games, just morons who try to pad their KD and probably don't have alot of fun doing it.

To the OP: You're problem is you've just made a bunch of generalisations in your post which are mostly untrue, but contain a small element of truth to them. Why don't you come back with a thread that doesn't blow something way out of proportion and then we'll talk.
To those claiming that people who use scouts and t3 alts only pvp for kb stats: Get real. There a million other reasons for using a scout and kb stats is the least of them. I use a scout not to avoid getting killed so much as to further my chances of finding and catching targets. In this way I use a scout because: it lowers my chance of dieing unnecessarily to a blob and cutting my roam short, an unaffiliated alt does not scare targets away like my scary piwate main does which allows me to d-scan them and pinpoint them without scaring them off, a scout can also have the ability to probe which hugely increases the possibility of finding targets and if there is no obvious pirate in system carebears are less likely to go looking for probes on their scanner.
I flew for several months solo without a scout and decided that using a scout was just simply more effective and more logical and would increase my enjoyment of eve overall. It has nothing to do with "oh my precious kb stats!".
P.S. Before anybody starts trying to talk condescendingly to me. I'm a full-time -10 pirate who's never flown in a gang bigger than 12 people, my average gang size is 2-4 people, a lot of my total flying time and kills have been solo (sometimes with scout and sometimes not with a scout). I hate blobs as much as the next guy, I hate falcons, and think an archon is a handy box for moving cargo around. So don't try to accuse me of not having experience with these issues ;)

To the OP.
I honestly live for PVP, but there are certain ships I avoid like the plague. Given mediocre piloting skills I tend to run from engagements too. Especially until I can get some isk rolling in to compensate for the losses in the learning curve. Right now, it's more profitable for me to warp out.
Kudos to you who have mastered some sort of system to generate isk. It's what we all should strive for to some degree or another. I'm working on that, and soon I'll be out there. Challenging the drop ins that come.
Making a steady income stream takes work. SUCK syndrome could be synonymous with lazy. They may be disenfranchised WoW players. See: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3088/2335016192_6003c39c4c.jpg

This cynicism of warfare really sums it up. It is true. Except I don't like the fact that this truth favours the big gangs.
I happen to like solo pvp more than being in a fleet.
Being a trader initially for more than one year and just trying pvp occassionally, I was killed again and again, mostly by being outnumbered. Now I have adapted and die less often, much better at surviving, but I am still no good at killing. Reason: I am extremely paranoid.
I can't remember the last time I encountered a solo pilot who didn't have some friends in the same system, or an adjacent system (which I have intel on).
I really understand their tactic. Being in some sort of a gang makes the probability of survival much higher than being alone.
So now I have started to think about strategies to get some kills too.
But it is difficult: Yesterday I was waiting alone in the top belt in 0.0 system. Waiting for some of the pilots in the system to attack me. I was in a cane. I was aligned to a safe spot just in case. In addition I was flying at full speed in that direction. Leaving the 0 km spot in the belt by some 170 m/s. When I was 20 km away, a Sabre and a Arazu warped in at 0 km. The bonuses of the Arazu alone would have made me a sitting duck, so I warped away just as the interdiction sphere approached me from behind, escaping by a hair's breadth...
Hence my paranoia was hardly futile. Without it I would've lost my ship and got popped. Those who attacked me were even in different corps, ie "local" gave me no initial warning.
Now I am trying to adapt to that config (Arazu + Sabre). Btw "adaption" is the key word in this thread (except "suck", of course). But I am unable to find a counter tactic as the Arazu in particular - with its sensor dampener bonus - is all passively powerful. Hmmm... In this instance I wish I could adapt in such away that the adaption would exclude the "hit warp" option. Ideas are welcome. Way too often that option is by far the most evolved one. The fittest, so to speak.

Soooo, the issue is that you cannot get easy kills?
Quote: Here's a basic rule of warfare in general:

Here is a basic rule for you: IT IS A ****ING GAME, NOT REAL LIFE (so also stop the freaking sun tzu quotes please).
To also answer another post: yes I would rather fight a fight where i got a chance to lose than a fight where i dont have a chance to lose, if I am looking for the good fights. (For example if someone attacks our sov in the last timer where i forgot evaccing all my assets I rather got an easy win than a good fight). But yeah I rather lose a good fight than win a one-sided gank. I dont care about K/D ratios, I dont play for my KB stats but to have fun. And those who have fun because of their KB stats need help.
And last thing to mention: there are still enough true small gangs arround. But while small gang fights can be alot of fun, small gangs are also those who blob most, so they dont have right to complain about blobbing. I simply define blobbing as having a ****load more ships (/firepower) than the other side. What those flying in small gangs usually see as a good fight (judging by the gfs afterwards in local), is ganking a pve ship 10 vs 1. Now if there 10 pvp ships get killed by 100 pvp ships it is suddenly blobbing, while 10 vs 1 is small gang pvp?
