I'm looking for an ME research slot. Last friday I had made a calendar note to remind me that to be ready of some ME slots being free in the near future. I checked, only to find that all were over 15 days in 20 jumps around jita. I know this isn't true, as I when I made this calendar note 2 weeks earlier the time left for some slots was about 15days.
Is it possible to cancel a research slot and get it free immediately, which lets you use it immediately again? That'd be pretty unfair imho, as the one who picks it first has total control over it. Nobody could ever plan to compete with the current owner. Please tell me how it works

You can queue up jobs in all types of public and private slots. So you should have done that 2 weeks ago instead of just marking your calender.

as mentioned you can queue up a job, what you do is select the slot you want to use and then plan the research as you want. you get a warning that the job will be pending until (date displayed when the job will start)it will do as a job which would run right away and the BP is locked until your job completes.

It sounds like you're missing the basic concept of queues.
You can install a job into a slot that is currently being used. As soon as the current job completes yours will begin.

If you have your own corp you can also join a research alliance and use their POS. Thanks to the 'scientific networking' skill the BPOs are safe in your corp hangar. A quick scan of the sell forum yields: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1491612, although I have never done business with them.
