Edited by: The R00k on 20/04/2011 21:17:26 So several years ago Fanfest was all abuze about a certain feature CCP showed promising a future for eve where at least a crow could seamlessly travel from inner atmosphere to space flight. There was a nice video of it and lots of excited people. It was my most anticipated feature for years. Now I have to ask Has CCP dropped planetary flight. Maybe I missed the devblog.
Has DUST 514 taken over? does it make it a impracticality for us to fly into the atmosphere of a planet breaking all kinds of sound barriers at 100ft well some poor 11year old xbox player has his surround sound on trying to kill another 11 year old. And I blast is ears off with a flyby?
Basically what I am asking is: Has CCP stopped/cancelled development of planetary flight for eve players and if not what stage was it last seen at in house?

It was just a prerendered video, nothing more. So the project can't be dead because there never was such a project. |

"This is atmospheric flight" clap-clap-clap-clap, during DUST fanfest introduction 2 years back.
Planetary flight for eve was never planned, nothing is ever planned with Agile Scrum.
When DUST delivers "atmospheric flight" then that will be that... "See we did it".
Eve is not an over-arching sci-fi sim like they would like to believe but a basically broken core game, with a few mini-games attached to deliver features in tacked-on piecemeal fashion.

The first 3 points are correct (mostly).
I think if you compare the aerial combat that will be in DUST to the "standard EVE combat with a sky/terrain background" that we saw in the planetary flight video most people would have to agree there is no contest. DUST will be a far, far better medium to deliver both aerial combat and FPS action than EVE could ever deliver. EVE just isn't geared that way.
This does not mean that EVE is a broken game at it's core. Nor does it mean that DUST is a tacked on mini-game. They are two separate games optimized for entirely different types of gaming, that happen to interact closely (hopefully very closely) with each other.
It's never been done, and is a bold concept. I look forward to see how it pans out.

Of course. Eve engine is a dead-end, they have to deliver these features in other games, then claim that somehow makes them part of the eve universe.
It's all marketing now mate.

I fail to see how their claim could possibly not be true.
The two games interact with each other, they share writers, they share lore, they share art styles (if not outright art assets)... pretty sure that damn well enough qualifies them to claim they're part of the same "EVE Universe".
If you want to get pedantic, they're not the same GAME... but that's ****ing obvious. So who gives a ****?

The EVE engine is designed to be able to deliver strategic combat on an extremely large scale that has yet to be matched in any other game. It is fundamentally different from an engine designed for twitch based, small scale ground/air FPS combat.
Any 13year old recognizes this. Your Troll Fu is weak today my friend.
