I'm thinking of skilling up for an Orca and was thinking of using it to AFK mine while my main does missions.
The Fit:
Highs:
Salvager I
Tractor Beam
Medium Remote Armor Repair II
Mids:
2x Large shield extender II
Heat Dissipation Amplifier II
Magnetic Scattering Amplifier II
Lows:
Damage Control II
Shield Power Relay II
Rigs:
Mining drone Augmentor I
2xMining drone Augmentor II
Drones:
5x Hornet EC-300
5x Warrior II
5x Mining Drone II
With max skills in drones it yields a little over 400m3 a minute with travel time included. It has loads of space to store ore. The med armor rep is for the drones if you don't get back fast enough to use your warriors.

Nice idea, but I think it's not worth it.
Mining with that, you will make about 2 million ISK per hour. That's not really much, especially if you compare it with the costs.
First of all, you have to pay the Orca itself. Let's say about 400 million. That would be about 200 hours mining with it to get to the point were it starts to be profitable. And you are using a second account for that. That means, the second account must also pay itself to be profitable (or you could just buy the PLEX and sell it wich would be more profitable). You have to make at least enough ISK to pay PLEX. Let's say you have to make about 350 million a month. This would mean AFK mining with that account about 6 hours every day.
Calculate that with your other sources of income you have if it's really worth it and if you really have more income than before.

You'd be better off skilling the alt to run ganglinks and sit in a BC.

/shrugs its just Indutrial mining taken to a stupid level.
Droping that in a belt is asking for someone whos bored and could care less about the sec hit to pop it.
droping it into missions with roid belts is a bit better but not by mutch.
as a "mobile base" for mission running or exporing they are fairly good.

Drop the shield power relay and add reinforced bulkheads. The Orca has more than enough passive regeneration for high sec rats without it, while the bulkheads add a lot of buffer which might save you against suicide gankers.

How often do suicide attempts on an Orca occur in hisec? Since they cant drop anything of value due to the corp hangar, and the cost of the firepower required to take out a tanked Orca, does it happen very often in hisec?

TBH the orca kills in empire are probably more colateral damage from hulkagedon sweeps than anythig else.

I have done this in the past - using the Orca to boost a fleet, while mining out asteroids. Scan the belt, set one drone on each of the highest capacity rocks, set Orca to approach the biggest rock, let it go while the rest of the fleet runs the mission.
Using that same alt to fly an AFK T2 sentry drone dominix increases my income from missioning by more than the mining income.

Aside from anything else Mining Drones, even T2 ones, are very fragile. You would more than likely have them destroyed very quickly.

Unless you're micro-managing drones, you'll probably lose as much replacing the ones that die to belt rats than you'll make from actually mining.

Mining in an Orca is just so terribly inefficient, I don't even see the point. Get a Hulk, throw in cargo expanders and rigs, and it has plenty of capacity. If it is really that big a deal to have to fly back and forth to the station a few times per hour, maybe you should think of new ways to make afk-isk?
