To me pirates add spice to EVE. Without pirates EVE would be boring. What I dont like is alts in EVE. If you create an alt your security status should follow to the alt. If you want a low security status you will have to earn it.

amen to the 'pirates are ok and add spice' bit
back to hell with ye about the 'alts should get main's sec status following him around everywhere' bit
There are many, many reasons why flashy pirates have non-flashy empire alts. You can probably think of a few if you just...think about it. Stuff goes here |

agree. making alts to do regular things "with 0.0 sec status" is plain lame. You want to be bad guy? Well, you can. but why you hide under mother's skirt when you have what you have done?

I also agree that Pirates are OK in EVE.... i opt for a POLL to check how many people think that pirates are okay in EvE :P
anyway, if there wouldn't be ganking in high sec then high sec would be completely secure, to me, that sounds unrealistic, and by the way, mineral prices would probably go down and high-sec miners would even earn less (and its already low).

Pirates are ok'ish, even though they're scum as persons
Concord doesn't feel like police force at all if they don't remain in the crime scene for at least 20 min and let the ganked one get his items back to safety.
Stargates and stations should be locked down to criminals. Learn interstellar warpdrives or hide in the asteroid fields...

I'm happy Pirates exist. It really adds the threat of death to EVE. I wish more suicide gankers were out and about though. That would help get rid of the bot problem.

It's interesting how much and how often people tie what a character does in an MMO with the person themselves. It's like they have no experience with RPG's at all.
Not that most people playing MMO's are into the role-playing thing, or only partially into it, it's still a character you play in the game. When a person plays a pirate it is the character, not the person that is a pirate. When a person plays a miner it is the character, not the person that is a miner (fact is I doubt there's many miners that can waste money on a game like this--something to consider as you enjoy your game).
EvE is a game. I know that CCP likes to call it "real life", but it just isn't. It is true that with it's dynamic realism, the fact that player changes have effects instead of just temporarily flipping a bit, makes it so that we can all get very involved in this very fake world. It is emersive and the goals we have for our characters are as real as they can be in that there can be something beyond reaching the max level and having the most powerful set of armor/weapons available. Still though, it's a game and the characters in it are not us.
It's also a game with a lot of different styles of play available. You can be a miner, a PvE incursion pilot or whatever, a PvP pilot in hisec wardecs, lowsec, and/or 0.0 sov., you can be a spy in a corporation working for another corporation...there's just so much available.
Now, when you play a game do you always play with exactly the same style all the time? I know I don't. When I play a pirate I try to make my little female dog in heat the best darn pirate she can be. Does this mean I always want to play a pirate? Not really.
One of the things that makes EvE great is the permanence of the consequences of actions. If I stick to the same character all the time and try to play all that's available to do in EvE I'm going to have an incredibly difficult time. I tried it once and my 2 year old character is cool, and can do a lot of things, but isn't really great at anything. The only way to get the most of what EvE has to offer is with alts.
Would you like it if I told you that you had to play a miner with all your alts because you chose to make one of them a Hulk/Orca pilot? If so, I guess I will never understand you and you won't understand the likes of me. If not, why do you think it's right to force that on other players?

Many people incorrectly consider their game toons to be an extension, and therefore a part of, themselves.
The correct, forget correct healthy, mindset is that this is a thing I created, it is not me, it is not a part of me, a reflection of me, or a measure of my self worth, it is a pixel toon in a pixel game.
Punishing one pixel toon for another pixel toons actions in that context makes no sense.

I'll agree that pirates make the game more interesting, they're still scum though... you can cry play acting all you want but you choose how you interact with ppl in and out of game, and this being an mmo those aren't pixels you are screwing over, there are ppl on the otherside of the screen. Yes pirates make the game more interesting, no I'm not one of them, my only complaint with them is when they deny their inner nature. A psychopath is not an insane person, its just an amoral person out for their own interests with no concern for how their actions effect others. They are more common in real life too than you would think. Psychologist estimate 2 % of the general population are psychopaths, 25% of prison inmates and 4% of company executives. You aren't alone, fess up and embrace your immorality.

Edited by: KFenn on 20/05/2011 23:52:54 The fact of the matter is, EVE is a sandbox. People have freedom to do what they like, and if they want to flick the sand in other people's faces, then so be it. But the neutral alts allow us the ability to continue to flick sand. Without them, there are no pirates, simple as. It's (generally) too risky to run a manufacturing operation in lowsec at this moment in time. The margins certainly aren't worth it. We need the alts to buy ships, mods, and whatever we need to survive day-to-day. If those alts are involved in pirate actions them sure, their sec status will drop. But guilty by association just won't work.

I'm not a psycho outside of Eve. Not a psycho within Eve either, just playing a role that CCP made possible. You come into lowsec...well, you pays your money and you takes your chances. Everyone and everything is pretty much fair game in Eve, just have you figure out how to do it ;) Stuff goes here |

Outside of eve, I'm a member of law enforcement. Inside, well...let's just say I'm on the other side of the law. The game is all about characters and the ability to explore a lifestyle other than your own.
On the alt sec status note, alts are useful for more than just scouting/spying on targets. Many lowsec pirates have to have a hauler alt to move their loot out of system/bring their new ships in system.

The real problem is some STUPID people not knowing the diference between a computer game and reality. And apparently, you don't.
