After much verbal abuse the cap pilot finished slowboating the 12km back to the station. Our newest teammates had arrived. Not without incident however, trying to visualize a 5km sphere from looking at the overview is not an exact science.
Randy began to question leaving warcraft for this abuse.
Dear CCP I respectfully request a 3D tactical overlay if only to save newer players the grief of lighting bad cynos.
Another alternative which would foster player interaction would be disallowing cynos on station, which would be easier to light.

In the meantime, ask him to also fit a Salvager I ù hovering over it will create this very handy 5km sphere in the overlay, and he can use that as a 3D rangefinder and as a starting aid for learning to eyeball it properly.

/me thinks Huzzah fail'd epically with this post, i mean seriously fit the damn salvager 1, mouse over and wallah this is something every ****ing cyno alt should know and use, i kind of wish the cyno mouse over was similar to the salvager that would be nice :D

I don't know what you people are on. Being a contrarian should be an Olympic sport.
Stupid UI is stupid, if you need to fit a salvager I in order to find out this very basic and useful piece of information.

You don't have to or need to. It's a training tool to get your eye in. Once you've gotten used to it, the range rings are quite sufficient.

Have you ever heard of the tactical overlay? It's right there, on your HUD.

Your intelligence is more pathetic.
The tac overlay is in 2 dimensions, it doesn't work as a range finder for things relatively above or below your ship. OP had a point, but as was pointed out, use a salvager.

How well does that actually work with the salvager?
I've noticed that the hitbox and model space are two completely different sizes. So if you are using the 5km sphere off of the station model, I'd expect that to not always work well.
On cyno spots I use often, I take the 15 minutes to mark the hitbox with cans, and then range find off the cans.
I suppose the salvager would be good for impromptu station cynos....

Collisions on a station are based on the model itself. Some stations have a docking ring of ~50km+, so it's really easy to get a cyno at 0m docking range but not have the incoming cap bump the station model. It's the ones where the undock point is the edge of the docking ring that make awful cyno stations.

I see stuff like this all the time--I think it's because most people don't read, so they hear something and take a wild guess at how it's spelled. Then it spreads on the one place most people do read--the internet.

It works perfectly. No exceptions - even the dodgy stations work first time every time.

You're wasting your time. Use the salvager - its far more accurate. For hostile systems I just use a cloaky ship to slowboat into position, make the bookmark and then dock up. A little later insta-undock in cyno boat and then warp to the cyno point at zero.
