It's not required but it does help you focus on two different area at the same time.
Also it's easier to make money if you have two characters.

Hi Oosel,
I am posting on my MAIN character, and to answer your question(s) you CAN enjoy all aspects of Eveonline without the headaches of having more than one character. Even tho it may seem like it would be more fun with more than a main character I have come to find out it's more manageable with just one and just concentrate on skills that I need for now.
I enjoy industry as a miner and even in mission running and 0.0 ops as well with my corpmates and alliance. Sure, an alt may be nice sometimes but I see no real need especially when you cannot skill an alt on your main account while your skill training is active on your main character. It really in my opinion defeats the purpose of having alts unless you want to add another account to train an alt there full time as well.
I have seen enough members of the community here do such a thing and feel it's just a waste of time and money that you don't need to spend unless you have a rich uncle around (hehehe), in closing it's up to your to decide if one is enough or if your want to spend extra money to open another account to have another alt to do the things you want it to do.
Hope this helps a little bit, Fly Safe

Only true benefit is controlled / throw away cyno characters.
After that, you really need 'friends' in this MMO, not more micromanagement.

I spent the first 12-18 months only using one account.
If you're not in a corp you hit a point at which you either go down the alt/second account route or you accept that large chunks of the game aren't accessible to you. Eg - I have a JF alt so moving from one region to another is painless enough for me to do, can't do it without someone to light the cyno and when the ship is 5bill+ and the cargo is much the same then best to light it yourself on a second account
tl;dr most people that do anything other than highsec missioning have a second account

I'm a low sec pirate with no corp (1 man corp) and get along just fine with a solo account. I activated a second account after about 18mo of playing, but consilidated my accounts because I found I don't really need an alt. While they are handy, I find the game more enjoyable (and more challenging) with only one account Of course this is a alt on that account, for protection purposes =)

I have no alts, and am doing just fine. Get a couple good friends that play with you regularly and you can do anything you want, plus the company makes it more fun than if you were doing it yourself.
Obviously those who look at "just the bottom line" will realize that using alts of their own allows them to get more isk per hour, but those people are also not playing eve for fun, but are rather making it work. _______________________________________________ "If you want to taste the ground, feel free to attack." - Kenshin Himura

This.
I've had up to four accounts running at once and it's far more trouble than I believe it to be worth. On the up-side, I did manage a healthy profit by selling my alts on the bazaar. That's about the only thing I do with an alt account these days: train up a character purely for sale (or re-sale).

You can enjoy everything. You just can't specialize a lot if you train dispersed so it will take a very long time until you'll be very good at one thing, let alone at a lot of things. Skilltraining is just very, very slow in EVE.
And well the least you can do is make a forum alt!!

of course
my philosophy is that my character is my real avatar in the world of game not only a toon/tool. So there cant be more "me" than one in one game.
Ive spent like an hour with my gf to make my char look like me in rl (i believe ive done it right - my gf when seeing my character always says "oh sheet, he really does look like you". My char name is the name i am using in every game/chat.
I value maximum of honesty and visilibity and no matter what i adress people always as me and i always make my intentions clear at the start.
Having alts if ones intentions are clear is okay imo and i respect people with more than one accounts unless mthey use them for hiding something (alt forum posting, corp thiefs, long term corp devious scheming, ninjas, etc.).
I saw some guys saying they post with alts... really people you are so low...

EDIT: Actually I have one character on Duality for testing the new player experience, but it will, of course, disappear when the next mirror happens. But on Singularity, I have only one character--she is my alter-ego in New Eden and I have no desire to make another.
If I could make any single change to EVE, it'd be that everyone would be limited to one character only. It's just a dream, but it's a nice one. -----WARNING SIGNATURE BELOW-----

Agreed, it's a silly word ...
And one character would be nice but it would make life a lot harder (and boring). And next to that, you just can't prevent people using more accounts anyway. EVE is really designed to cater a many account way of playing (never seen "power of two" advertisements in any other game and in my opinion EVE has the largest multi account population of any ptp game) and I don't just mean cyno alts or highsec trade alts and neutral repper alts but just the time it takes to train and specialize in more than one way.

I have been playing with 1 character on 1 account since i started in 2004. Its never really held me back from enjoying the game, sure there are some things that i need to turn to other people to help me with, such as make cyno's for me to move my capitals, or helping out if i find a nice juicy highend plex, or scouting a gate so i can move a few bils worth gear into lowsec etc. But if u find yourself a good corp there is no need for multiple accounts unless u really want to start using supercapitals, or ofcourse want to have spais in other alliances.
I have 2 other 800k sp character on my account purely for keeping near market hubs to check prices and put up sell orders etc. It just takes longer specialise in multiple fields with 1 character. You can't get really good at industry AND combat with 1 charater without alot of years of training. Thats why i have spent most my time in eve training combat skills, so now i can fly all races of subcaps at lvl5 skills, and in recent years i finally turned to getting carriers for lowsec-0.0 logistics and now have 2 races of carrier skills and 1 race of dread.
Don't let having 1 account hold you back. Where 1 guy might be able to do something solo with a bunch of alts, you can have more fun by bringing a few friends along and chat sh*t on comms whislt your at it.

I quite recently dropped from multiaccount, multicharacter down to single account and one (well two) characters (the other is just my corp ceo alt)
This game as it is, just isn't worth multiaccounting anymore, nullsec is supercap-online, lowsec is rather dead bar few areas and well... highsec is the vacation spot with the annoying kids (orphanage/privateers/what not).

I have been playing for 2+ years with only one character.Yes you can make more ISK,yes you can train two different things at the same time but still you will have double expenses and you can train those skills with your main anyway no need to have a "Mining alt" or a "pve alt" just do it all in one.
The only real need I can see for alts is if you are a capital pilot in which case I consider having your independence(cyno mechanics)is a must.

I believe that with just one character you can actually have more fun than with alts. This is because you really have to deal with the consequences of your playstyle. I for example pirated for a while and had to make a plan on how to get my hands on iskies. Another player would just have used his alt to run lvl 4's in empire. Now I decided to bring my sec status back up again and have to do so in a stealth bomber, flying alone through hostile territory never knowing whats behind the next gate. It is actually exciting and way more fun than just scouting ahead with an alt. Gives you that "lone wolf" feeling.
I do not feel limited at all. I have to choose what to skill and how to play, instead to be able to do everything, which forces me to interact with other players and thinking about what to do next, just how it is intended. I havent experienced the industry side of Eve yet- so what? Do I really have to? Its like in real life, you cannot become everyone and be able to do anything. Besides, it gives me an option for training in the future, should I feel satisfied with my combat skills.
Using alts prevents you from dealing with situations where you have to rely on other players- it is more comfortable but it is also boring. Its like playing a single player game. It is maybe one of the reasons some players burn out on Eve- constantly managing alts can turn the game to work and you have to pay with rl money for each account or spend 350+ mil every month for each alt- the question is if its really worth it. For me surely not.

Originally by: McRoll I believe that with just one character you can actually have more fun than with alts. This is because you really have to deal with the consequences of your playstyle.
Those consequences can cost you a lot of time and/or ISK though. Grinding up your security standings is not that hard but most people prefer an alt that can haul stuff out of highsec; many are proud of their -10.0 but don't want to face the consequences.
Another example: FW or faction missions. That way you close yourself off from 50% of empire space and those standings are a hundred times as hard to repair. Meaning you can't get a good deal in half of empire space. You can't AP travel there. You can't haul or trade there. If you're a WH dweller and the entrance changes to another part of empire space you can only get out by pod or interceptor.
Most "consequences" are just mere "limitations" and the fact that they're easy to overcome with training an alt for a short (or longer) while saves you an incredible lot of tedium. So no wonder 99% of the players have one or more alts. Or just don't do a lot of things because the gameplay limitations you suffer from it just arenŠt worth it. In fact EVE is the ultimate alt game because, more than in any other game, the gameplay mechanisms really direct you to more characters and accounts ("power of two").
