I just started playing EvE today and have no clue what I'm doing. Theg ame looked very cool from the clips I seen and I'm an avid spaceship. I'm going through the tutorial still but so far it seems very overwhelming. Also I guess Corporations are like Guilds in other MMOs? Are there such corps that can benefit from helping a new player get started and understanding the game?

Edited by: Mendolence on 28/04/2011 21:55:44 First, welcome to EVE. Second, you're in good company. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, or supposed to be doing, for a good month or more. Heck, what am I saying, I still don't really know what I'm doing and I've been playing for about two years.
You might want to try joining Eve University (player corporation). I've never been a member, but I've heard very good things about them.

One key to enjoying EVE is to not let the complexity frustrate you.
Corporations are like guilds in some other MMO. Alliances are collections of corporations under the same banner.
You might find Industrial Sized Knowledgebase useful as a general reference. There are also tons of other guides available depending on what specifically you want to learn about.

Ok. The point of the game is more PVP than it is PVE. You make your money from various PVE activities (mining, missions, trade, etc etc) and you spend that money on PVP vs. other players. There are huge areas of nullsec and lowsec to facilitate this, and huge alliances and corps going at it in massive wars all over the place.
Yes, corporations here are like guilds in other MMO's, with a few differences. Security is of high concern here because the wrong person can take everything a corp has in its offices (guild banks), so you get recruited based on trust more than on what you've trained. This is also because you can train anything (you're not limited to healer, tank, DPS) so as a result there is no specific need that any corporation has. Finally, corporations here can own assets such as starbases and outposts, they can hold sovereignty which marks the map with their name and gives them various benefits, and they can associate into alliances (the game code supports this) and declare wars (and fight wars).
Your game experience may vary, depending on what you want to do, but, generally, start with the idea that "ships are tools" and you're supposed to have dozens of them, to use and throw away as you see fit. Use them to create fun for yourself. Your character will generally train a whole bunch of skills (the average is 150-200 different ones), and you'll want to train for a series of ships, typically from frigates to cruisers to battlecruisers to battleships to tech 2 specialized ships or to capital ships (carriers and such). As you progress from ship to bigger ship, you're supposed to train the myriad of skills so you can also properly use the right weapons for that ship, the bigger defenses, etc etc.
You're not limited at all in what to train, you just get diminishing returns (a skill gives 5% bonus per level; the first level takes 30 minutes, the second 2 hours, 3 days, 3 weeks, and the last 5% takes 2 months). You can train any race's line of ships, and they all have plenty of ships for a variety of situations. There are also several industry-related skills that let you mine, refine, manufacture, trade, or "research" stuff.
At this point in time I would recommend looking at the EVE EVELOPEDIA (link is in the menu on the left side) and/or searching the internet for various guides about what the ships for the various races are/can do, so you can get an idea. Feel free to ask your questions here, and/or browse the Ships, Industry, and Market forums. There are sticky posts at the top of each with a ton of guides and resources.
Once you kinda decide what you want to do and on a set of ships to train for, you simply buy the skills from the market and off you go.

Edited by: Lanrick on 28/04/2011 22:14:29 Tau is absolutely right. Don't feel like you have to start doing it all to get it right and not get behind. Find what you enjoy doing now and learn more about that. You will never run out of new things to learn and shoot for in EVE. It is huge. Just let the vastness wash over you and enjoy the ride.
The career agents are really good for helping you find what you might want to do. Don't fret over needing to learn exactly the right skills to maximize this or that. Set a goal, and then learn what you need to get to that goal. You can always learn something else later. E
Eve Uni is a good choice also. Nice folks. Join the E-UNI channel. You can get a lot just from there even if you don't choose to join them. ------- "The strong are often wrong but the weak are never free." |

There are better corporations out there for people who know exactly what they want to do in game and specialize in that aspect. Whether that be pvp, wormholes, mission running or trade and industry.
For a general education however there really isnt anything to beat the uni as they teach most everything to a reasonable standard.
By its nature Eve is not a complex game. Its just there are hundreds of simple things to learn.

Edited by: Lanrick on 29/04/2011 16:16:28 Yes, UniWiki http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/ is great. Lots of good stuff to learn from.
Also download a pdf copy of the new ISK guide. http://www.eveonline.com/news.asp?a=single&nid=4381&tid=1 Really good stuff.
But in both cases, don't let the shear volume of what can be done overwhelm you. Pick what you want to do and then go find out more about that. Leave the rest for now. Eve is not like themepark games where you are expected to do it all since there are only a couple of things to do anyway. It is not like skipping crafting from the beginning is going make it a pain to go back and catch it up later.
Eve is a sandbox game. It excels at giving you a dozen different directions to go right from the beginning. Don't let the choice overload get to you. Pick what seems fun and try it. You can go other directions later because the other toys in the sandbox are always there waiting for you. ------- "The strong are often wrong but the weak are never free." |

"Join eve university, I've never been a member but.."
Please.
The best you can say about them is that they're carebear by the numbers. The worst? Well I have quite a few issues with their PVP training being a lesson in "how to out-blob the other guy."
YOU work out what YOU want to do. Then go find some like minded people and have a blast. It's the only way of doing anything in life.

Sorry to some I befriended. There was a lot of talk about APIs and such from various people and their coporations not to mention the entire lesbian rights movment going on in EVE by players who contacted me. While trying to sort out the interface and controls of the game this lowered my interest a lot in EVE. I'll stick to MMOs where lesbians and criminals don't populate or have access to my gaming accounts and social beliefs. - What a trip and set back... wow.

Now I'm confused. There can't possibly be enough female EVE players to justify this statement... A movement?

People ask about API's because of security concerns for their corp, that's normal.

Well ... if you haven't quit the game yet - quit that corporation and change your API.
Next - don't join another corporation for a little while ... just do the career agent missions and learn something about the game - then think about joining another corporation.
One of the things about online games is ... anyone, of any political persuassion in the whole world can play and ... they do ...
So ... you might run into any type of person there is playing a game anyone can play. Keep in mind here that this is as true of any other online game as it is of EVE ... So going else where is no guarantee that you won't run into a group of political people pushing their agenda.
That is odd though. I've been playing almost 4 years and ... never heard of that before.
If you don't care for some people ... stay away from them. You can block them from talking to you if they're bothering you and report them to the GM's if it becomes harassment.
Now ... if you're getting robbed in game - that is part of the game ... so you're not likely to get redress there.
Think about this ...
Once upon a time these Vikings (not known to be nice people) settled this island called Iceland.
Some centuries later - some of their descendants formed a computer company called Crowd Control Productions (CCP) and published a game called EVE ...
Is there a connection ... ? Maybe ... .
EVE is a harsh game though so if you want a friendly, less challenging atmosphere ... this may not be the place for you. But give it another try before you go. Not everyone playing this game is some kind of a political person who can't leave their personal politics out of the game ...

Since i was a part of the conversation that have lead Kazack to decide to stop playing i feel i should explain to the public what happend.
First some back story. I read over the forums and found his thread and figured "Meh im bored, can just as well see if he is online and need help with something". Sure enough he was and we had a rather pleasant conversation and i did my best to answear his questions.
At a later point (a couple of hours) he joined our public channel. Now please note that our public channel has a lot of different people in them, some that are friends of friends, some that are just bored and enjoy the random conversations that can occur there. During this conversation he asked what was requiered to join our corp. All the rules where fine but limited API keys threw him off and he wanted to do more research on this, which is fine ofc. As a new player you are not familiar with this. We gave him varius links to eve wiki and such and he was going to take a look at a later point.
Now please remember what i said earlier with random people that hang around in our channel. As long as they dont start to smack talk or act like asses,we dont mind. New faces are always welcome. But one of these random people (please note that i have no idea weather or not said person is a real female or not) had a female character and the title "a girl that likes girls". They had been in some sort of discussion (i dident pay much attention at this point i should add,but he/she was appologising for not understanding what he ment). This was followed by something along the lines off (sorry i cant post chat logs on these forums) that apparently one of our members had been lying when he stated our corp had morals, and i THINK he was trying to say that a lesbian obviusly cant understand whatever he was talking about.
This ofc raised a lot of warning flags for me,since we do have people in our corp that are homosexual and/or bi. I asked him (politely) if he had a problem with lesbians, and he made it rather clear that yes he had. We then settled that our corp where not the right corp for him (mutual agreement that went without any harsh words).
He proceeded to send me a mail on how to get in touch with him,and explained how he..hmm...Im sorry but me not being native english i dont know how to explain this any other way so it will be a copy paste. "But no worries at all as I'm a liberal and very fond of certain types of characters however I'm also one to avoid and ignore without remorse."
I thanked him for his mail,he left our public channel and sendt me this "You're a bad person huh?". Ofc i sendt him a reply and asked why he was of this opinion, but i never recived an answear.
So short version. Kazack i am sorry that you feel that a game that..accepts? homosexual players is bad and i do hope that you find a game where you wont run into this issue.
For the rest of you,i just wanted this out in the open since i do not wish this story to be made out to anything else then it is. Honestly im still not sure what happend but well, now you know what i know

I imagine it's a bummer: most MMO's contain representations of the devil (all them dragons), and the one spaceship one that he found that doesn't is now "ruined" for him. Good thing he hasn't found out about all the Amarr roleplayers (false god), or the percentage of the playerbase that is male but plays female characters, or the various Women of EVE or character portrait contests (adultery). Or the alliance politics, forum wars, and meta-game (lying).
It could be a minor and his parents saw the discussion and decided to block him; you don't have a guarantee that you're talking to only one person via text chat, and often when discussions don't make sense it's multiple people taking over and talking.

This reminds me of a story. I have no idea if it is true ... but anyway ...
Once upon a time ... Sir Walter Raleigh, who fell in and out of favor with his rulers, during one of his several trips to jail, wrote a History of The World.
While he was finishing up, one morning he observed through his window, a fight in the courtyard below. During the course of the day he then heard three different versions of the fight - none of which agreed with each other or what he himself believed he had seen.
He went to his room, took his History of The World - and threw it in the fire ....

I'd ask for your stuff in exchange for man-love but that might make you all scared.
Enjoy WOW - I heared Blizzard ban all openly GLBT guilds. That should fit well with your "liberal" mindset lol.
