Ok guys I need some knowledge from some awesome nerds regarding how Eve Voice works vs Teamspeak/Vent and other 3rd party voice programs.
It seems like when people use E-V it slows down the system in which they are in, is this true?
Is it hooked up to the same server/node/whatever? In otherwords does it create lag for gameplay?
The reason I ask is E-V in my exp is horrible and cuts out very often also seems to slow up other gameplay but I might be wrong maybe its just my internet connection that is struggling, I just wana make sure im not giving my self a plecebo and thinking E-V makes me slower when it dosnt.
Last;y I want to know this because for the amount of work the have put into EV and if it truly slows things down, [I know many peeps in many alli`s who told me they all get on Eve COmms to lag out Nodes for defense etc, but dont know how true?] I think it would be way better for CCP just to actually rent a totally separate Server with TS or Vent or Mumble and have basic Rooms with abilities to host a 10 man comms server, anymore would be up to players.
But with all the time and money put into it , it just seems more like a gimmick than anything of value. So please nerds explain how EV works so I can see if my Idea has any merit :)

E-V does well for small engagements, however in larger engagements that slow down and lag the game it to can experience problems. That is the main advantage of TS and Ventrilo which are outside voice comms because if you do crash or blackscreen or experience massive lag you can still keep track of what the fleet is doing or suppose to be doing.
Thoughts expressed are mine and mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect my alliances thoughts.

Eve voice is designed as an opt-in voice client for ad hoc situations. It was never meant to be used in large fleet fights, and why would it be?
Given how much trouble CCP has with lag, they never implemented EV with 1000 man fleets in mind, and you can see that in the UI (impossible to tell who is speaking once more then 5-20 people are in depending on your screen resolution).
It is, however, extremely useful for any situation where you might need to interact with someone once. Not everyone keeps a teamspeak client installed and ready to go. I use it often when helping new players, or in general chat channels when we decide to have an ad-hoc fleet.

They just need to eliminate it IMO if it cause lag at all, Maybe eleminate it when servers go into rinforced mode so it wont slow up anything.
For a game that is fighting tooth and nail for no lag they sure could do alot different like missiles being insta calc`d and just appying DMG based off initial calc hitting so many secs later rather than doing space/Location checks like any other ship it might not be fair since ships move etc but in all rality Lag is way more a problem than a drake fleet whining about there missiles not going as far [5km more] as they should have. Eve Voice. And taking SC`s and making them use 5 FB`s with 4x the DMG/HP etc...It just seems like they could cut down alot if they needed to.
Even making little images of 5 FB`s in tight formation but oly counting the 5 as 1 group would help alot.
I wanted to know how much more laggy EV makes a system, but it seems if any lag in a 1k man batle is to much and little bits count.

Edited by: Mithfindel on 29/04/2011 11:31:37 EVE Voice is hosted by Vivox on separate servers. Therefore, any lag caused by it would be either lag on Vivox's server (very unlikely, I think) or then the client integration is bad and you get local lag (your computer needs to do more work). In any case, saying that Vivox's server causing load on CCP's datacenter is likely superstition - any node lag would be simply caused by your blob, and if anyone gets extra lag from overloaded voice comms, it's you. The physics engine works in one-second steps, so if the voice service would be tied to it, you could speak only once per second. (And only to people on the same node.)
The main good thing about EVE Voice is the integration with the client & built-in access control as per characters. The main bad thing is the integration with the client - game client crash will drop you out of comms. Only way to access EVE Voice out of game is using the EVE Voice Beta on EVE Gate, which will let you join your corp channel voice chat.
Also, voice quality seems rather bad if you don't have a good upload bandwidth, but I assume that is rather universal. |

TY very much for explaining.
So EV has nothing to do with actual "Lag" Cool thx
