Question about drafting aggression in missions, if I attack an idling npc in a mission pocket do I necessarily have to do damage to it to draw its fire.
I'm thinking about fitting a civilian gun in one of my highs for a capless ammoless agression gun.

No, just shooting at it is all you need, even if it's far out of range. Using a single civilian gun to draw room aggro is standard practice for Gallente drone boats before unleashing drones.

Painters are occasionally weird. The first time I pulled Angel Extravaganza after I got into my torp Golem, I was in room four and on the third wave. The trigger for the final wave was about 70 km off from me, well out of even javelin range, so I killed the other ships that were closer, then I turned my painters on the trigger while my drones went to work on the elite frigates. The trigger battleship deaggressed and sat still, 70km off, even with 3 painters on him. In the end, I had to slowboat up until I got into javelin range and shoot him before he'd aggro me and start closing. ______________________________________________________ PVP is a question that has no one right answer but a lot of wrong ones. - Aelana Anais

Don't put out your drones until you have agro.

Activating an offensive module against a target will only aggro the group the target belongs to. If your drones head off after that target, it is likely that the drones will gain aggression on other groups through their proximity.
As Tau said make sure you have aggro before releasing drones, but also be sure your drones aren't going to proximity-aggro any NPCs.
