Why? For the lulz. Srsly, think of all the tears this would cause. CCP could get in some of that griefing they want us to do.
It would be epic IMO.
Also, projectiles are OP. And thats my story.

After all, I started training Projectile turrets 48 hours ago.

Both projectiles and missiles share one thing: the propulsion is in the charge and not in the module firing the charge.
Hence they use no cap.
That's just how it works.

If we get picky with "reality", railguns should totally destroy projectile turrets in damage, projection and tracking. And also ammo should cost a fraction.
Real naval (Large) railguns in development accurately hit a 5m target over 370Km away while firing 10 rounds per minute. Something no futuristic ship in EvE seems able to reproduce. At all. In an environment without gravity or air to muck up the firing calculations.
In short: future EvE-esque technology will unravel the mysteries of the warp drive, nearly magical cloning and eternal life extension, conscience projection across the universe, and naval engineering/terraforming to surpass our wildest dreams...but future railguns are worse than railguns ALREADY OPERATIONAL in XXI century boats from Earth.
Nice one, CCP :D

On the other hand, EVE != RL.
Also, RL Naval "autocannons" and arty are pretty awesome too, and just as in EVE they actually work, whilst railguns need a lot of love.

Pfffft. Railguns have anti-matter ammo. If we get really picky, why not just get rid of the middle man and simply magnetically propel the raw anti-matter at the target instead of wasting time on a slug?
And what's with lead railgun ammo? Lead isn't magnetic...
Etc., etc., etc..

Edited by: Sjugar on 04/05/2011 15:42:43 Realism in Eve.
Eve has got 1400 mm artillery, which is 1,4 meter and, which makes for a .7 radius. 3.14*.49^2 is about an area of 3 square meter. According to eve the volume of a charge is 0.025 m3.
which in effect would mean that the charge would be about 0.4 cm "long" .
We're not shooting projectiles but flat discs at the enemy. So much for realism.

1400mm refers to the size of the warp tunnel created that the round travels through. Turrets hit instantly which means that the rounds (even the laser beams) are traveling at faster than light speeds.
Which also explains why we can shoot through objects such as asteroids, stations and other ships. But doesn't explain why we can see lasers traveling to their target.
Eve. Realism. Two words that should never appear in the same sentence.

sigh, i have the same luck, the day the patch came out "introducting tracking, the way things are meant to hit and miss". That was the same day i was able to fit 1400 artys to my tempest, from the top to the bottom of the pile in a matter of hours.....

The depiction of arty and auto cannons in EVE are also underpowered compared to RL, in the 50s the US where testing 280mm 15kt artillery shells that where a lot more powerful than say a Hurricane spitting out 6x 425mm shells with fission warheads every few seconds.
By the RL tests weapons carried by something like a Cane or Vaga could decimate continents in a few minutes but are nothing like that powerful in game.

Lets not discuss reality here. In reality, if a single 425mm anti-matter shell hit an unshielded ship, it would violently decompress and blow up into a million pieces.
Space combat won't work as you see it in EvE.

If a single 420mm anti-matter shell hit anything, it would result in a fireball that could obliterate a smallish country, much less a ship.
1 KG of antimatter is enough to equal the Tsar Bomba 50 megaton bomb. I am fairly certain you could fit quite a few kilo's into a 420mm shell.

So that's it, then. A 425mm railgun shooting an antimatter charge could be the Gallente doomsday device, when in fact people using them are laughed at by other people firing conventional projectile weapons loaded with "carbonized" lead slugs.

SF wise I doubt the shell would have more than a few grams of antimatter in if you compare them to say quantum/photon torpedoes from Startrek they carry very small amounts of Hydrogen and anti hydrogen and then mix it on impact to get the best detonation and the bulk of the warhead is filled with containment systems.
The shells in EVE apparently contain it within plasma but how the techno babble plays out with that it doesn't really say, maybe they compress it into the molecular space of other matter or something to prevent annihilation? either way the shell wouldn't contain much as you need to contain it somehow.

Hmm, 1st few comments was outlining the "trollness" of everything this thread is about, however, i'd like to redirect people's atention to the fact you can shoot guns all day without the need for any capacitance, as the firing mechanism/propulsion method is that of a chemical explosion, wasteful and ineffiecient.
