Does anyone else feel that it takes way too long for new characters to develop? You get enough money along the way, but it takes forever to get the skill for a new ship and new equipment?

Yep.
It takes a long time for you to actually get the necessary skills.
For instance,combat.
You have to get an absolute ton of skills, and it takes some while to get them to level 3 which is the part where afterthat it usually takes 19 hours or so.
Engineering skills for capacitor rechargers
Mechanic skills for armor repairers,harderners
Shield skills for shield boosters,harderners
Gunnery skills, motion prediction, sharpshooter, etc, unless you are caldari in which you can just get a grand total of 2 skills(missle launcher operation) followed by the missle type skill
Navigation skills like afterburner operation
Electronic skills and propulsion jamming for webifiers and scramblers
Social skills especially connections(without connections it would take forever for a new player to get enough standing to use a high quality level 2 agent)
Learning skills and advanced learning skills
And finally the ship skill itself, such as destroyers, ship command, cruisers, etc.
It takes a month+ minimum to actually be able to get somewhat decent skills, then you start thinking about getting them to level 4 and starting the ridiculously long level 5 skills for, say,an assault frig(by which time you cant use it since it will get raped in most level 3 missions, which is a irony)

OMGWTFICANTJUSCREATEACCOUNTANDBUYBATTLESHIPANDWTFPWNEVERYONE!!!!!
I really feel your pain, man...
The problem is not the skill training time - it is players unwilling to learn how to fly the different ship types. This is not just about big ships and skills - training and experience is of the essence. And that takes time.
I think it takes just about the right time for new characters to develop. --------------------------------------------- When you have to kill a man, it takes nothing to be polite |

Just wanted to add, ive been playing this game now for only 7 days (it's excellent) and i think the skill process is perfect.
I have just gained the required skills to pilot a Stabber, although im not planning on moving away from my Rifter for the time being, it's ideal for all the level 1 agent missions ive been running.
By the time i come to tackle level 2 i will have the skills and money to upgrade to a cruiser and fit it out nicely.
This is a big game, there is a lot to learn. What it the rush ? just enjoy it

I completely agree with it being a big game, but its just strange for someone starting to be stuck with like next to nothing for like days. And end up doing similar courier missions and mining....just strikes me as a bit repetitive, maybe putting more intermediate ships would make starting off a bit more exciting

I've been playing about a week and, thanks to some advice in game, I can run L2 missions in my 'shield tank' Merlin frigate.
I think the skill development rate is about right *shrugs* I was patient and took all my Learning skills to level 3 first, that really seems to help -- ** All accounts cancelled - have fun guys ** |

I don't think it takes too long to train up the basic skills you need to survive in EVE. As you learn these skills, you're also gaining experience in the EVE universe by doing various things such as Mining, NPC'ing, missioning, PvP etc... You can get yourself into a cruiser soon enough, but there's the question of whether you know how to pilot it "properly". I won't say how many times I've seen cruiser setups with just small weapons (because the character can't fit mediums yet).
What REALLY takes time however, is the specialization in certain skill areas. That forces you to make a choice. Its becoming increasingly difficult to remain a "Jack of all trades"

it takes maybe a week to train a decent character, capable even of participating effectively in PVP.
You can fly cruisers within 2 weeks...
After that, well, go wherever you want. People overestimate the number and lvl of skills you need to do many things a lot of the time. ------------

2 weeks!!.....unless you sit on there for like 24 hrs, it does take a long time. Not to moan and groan about it, but just thought it *could* have been better.

You dont have to be online to train a skill, and if you plan ahead, you only need spend a few minutes a day loging in the change skill training.

I remember keeping my computer on, and being logged in for 48 hours straight, before I was told that it trains the skill while you're offline.
Think most of us have been there tbh :P
