I am having a complete nightmare finding a new desktop computer, every time I look online I end up tweaking the specs and ending up with a ú1000+ price tag which is just way too much for me at the moment. What I am looking for is something that will play Eve on top settings, STALKER games, maybe battlefield 3 although I think I maybe asking for too much with that, and other general games. My budget is ú650 for the computer, don't need monitor, accessories and such. To sum things up I need a computer for games, movie / music and general Internet douchebaggery.
Before anyone says it, I know I can save money by building the computer myself but I prefer the idea of having a full warranty and I really don't trust myself as I haven't touched the inside of a computer in years.
So any reccomemdations of a system that would be ideal?

novatech is where i get all my PC hardware. competitive prices, matched with excellent customer service equals good times for all. they have a forum where you can browse through other people's suggested set ups with comments or post your own ideas and get feedback. that may give you a starting point?
they also do pre-built systems if you're not confident in building it yourself so there is always that option to.
hope this was of at least some help

Probably not going to happen for under 1000 pounds.

@sarah mcjimmy - That system you linked looks pretty good, and at a nice price too. Doesn't have the power that I am hoping for but then again I know I am working with little funds. I'll have a proper look tomorrow though when I have time. Never heard of Novatech before so thanks for giving me more choice.
@ Caleidascopen - I doubt it is hard to get a computer to play Eve on full settings, could be mistaken though but for non-fleet work it shouldn't require a super gaming machine to achieve. As for stalker, it's kind of a benchmark for me, the better it plays that the happier I would be. As for battlefield 3, I don't expect my computer to play it with settings on high but being able to play BF3 would be nice.
Thanks for the replies.

Stalker doesn't take much to run. When I had the Athlon 2 x640 (i think) with a Radeon 5750, I could run ~ 30FPS so you don't need a BEAST of a machine to run it (I was running the Stalker (Call of Pripyat) complete mod with improved textures on max settings Directx 11 and everything). When I download the latest ATI/AMD video drivers, I notice that on the release notes there are comments about STALKER having a certain % increase in FPS due to driver optimization from time to time so things may have changed for the better since then.
Just FYI I've got - Phenom 2 965 BE 8gb ram (DDR2) Radeon 5750
Suits me just fine although I'm thinking about getting a new GFX card once CQ/Incarna comes out, most likely nVidia so I can take advantage of the Physx. Overall, my build probably set me back ú600 at the time of purchase. Only problem I've found when buying pre-built is that they can have good memory, bad GFX card or sketchy processor but good HDD. Nothing against buying pre-built but if you know what you are looking for then you'll get exactly what you need at a good price minus extra build charges. And did I mention Novatech have excellent customer service hehe? If something doesn't work then they have no problems at all with you returning it. Plus their delivery times are lightning fast.

After much consideration and searching the net I have taken peoples advice and am building my own computer, just seems stupid to get a pre-built computer at higher price and lower spec than a DIY system, I have a feeling that I'll be swearing a lot tomorrow when I have to put everything topgether .
@ Bodrul - I got my mother a laptop from Mesh Computers a few years back and the service was great, the laptop has only had one real issue and compared to my acer it's great (I hate Acer).
@ sarah mcjimmy - Thanks for the replies, Novatech looked pretty good but I have gone with overclockers.co.uk due to all the good reviews of their service elswhere and their prices were nice. And you are right, to get a decent computer with good parts accross the board it seems you really do have to build your own, or spend a fortune.
I have gone a little over budget (well over budget) but I think it's worth the price. Cost ú880.06 including VAT & delivery.

Must say, had an issue with the on-line ordering (Banks fault) so had to order over the phone and the sales guy was awesome. Even saved me some money and advised me about an incompatible part I had chosen. Now just cant wait to get it tomorrow and get it running.
Thanks again for the advice & suggestions folks, much appreciated.

All the individual parts you ordered should be covered by their own warrenty anyway. When you buy a pre built computer they just stick something on the side so that you cant open it then charge you for slotting your RAM memory back in place when it comes loose lol.
You'll have absolutely no hassle building it if you follow my guide to the letter
Computer building guide
> Contact freind who's good at building computers > Ask them if they will 'help' you build it > Wait for them to come around to 'help' then sit idly by watching them do all the work (possibly make them a brew) > Tell freind you dont know how to install windows and drivers and ask them to 'show you how to do it' > Make another brew or get some beers then sit idly by while they do all the work > Once theyve finished doing all the work for you enjoy playing with your new computer
That guide has always served me well and now I pass it on to you

@ Twisted Xistance - That has to be the best advice I have ever heard, maybe I can catch up on Prison Break while they do it.
I have built a computer in the past, about six or seven years ago and it was fine. The main reason I was looking for a pre-built computer this time was due to me not touching the insides of a computer for years except for some minor tweaking, but after peoples comments and the price difference I realized it would be stupid to pay someone else to do it.

Edited by: Vogue on 10/05/2011 11:42:33 Be very careful when placing the CPU on top of the CPU socket thingy that has spring loaded pins:-
If say the edge of the CPU clips one of those pins it can put it out of alignment. A lot of people have done this, maybe me, which can create problems such as the PC can't access beyond 4GB when it has say 8GB of memory sticks plugged in on the motherboard.
