Saw this game released on Steam today, and it looks really cool. Here's a synopsis:
Quote: Dwarfs!? offers an addictive, fast paced arcade-like experience, with plenty of difficulty levels and game modes to play, in the tradition of great games such as "Lemmings" and "Dwarf Fortress."
As the new overseer for your underground Dwarf base, your job is to manage the small colony and make it as rich as possible, before they meet their inevitable doom! To survive as long as possible, youÆll have to steer and guide your greedy little fellows to the richest points in the caves, while avoiding all the dangers û so they donÆt end up destroying your Town Hall and its essential supply of beer.
They explore for you, they mine for you and they fight for you - but if you don't keep an eye on them, they'll do what they do best: die for you and take everyone else with them. But, if all else fails when the Spider Queen comes for you û use the OutpostÆs Dwarf Cannon and shoot Dwarfs at her!
There are only 3 certainties in this world: death, taxes and that Dwarfs always dig too deep!
And a gameplay video - Linkage
Does Dwarf Fortress get an upgrade!? Eeeeeee!

If it doesn't have Dwarf Fortress' downright terrible and clunky interface, then I'm game .

DF interface is a bit silly, but not that bad. After 1 day of fooling around I got the UI down, its actually very simple once you engage your gray matter. Intuitive? No. Impossible to get into unless you are a total geek? No. It is unusual, but you very quickly remember the key combinations, then it becomes a non issue. It could do with a lot of streamlining of course.
That said, do use a graphics pack, so the presentation becomes a bit esier.
I use this: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.0
with the Ironhand tileset loaded. Looks a whole lot better.
All in all DF is very rewarding to get into, if you like a bit of dwarf madness. You get some very fun stories and event out of it, and keeping your fort running while under attack form various beasts and evil civilisations can be fun. One of my first games has an event I will not forget "dwarf baby killed in a cloud of fire". Happend right after I kind of breached hell and all my dwarves ended up as piles of ash. :D
That said, it is not a casual game as such, some effort is needed to get teh UI at first, and games tend to run for a long time. But it is great fun, and the world is supprisingly detailed.
But this new game on steam? Its nothing like DF, at all. Only thing in common is dwarves and mining. This is a simple flash game. I am not sure why they even listed DF as their inspiration. My guess is a marketing gimick to draw in some DF players. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a demo if you wanted to try it . The problem for me with Dwarf Fortress was that the crappy interface stood in the way of the non-crappy gameplay . It certainly wasn't impossible to overcome, but it definitely was a hassle.
I haven't purchased it yet, I just enjoy informing the public. Give it a shot!

Dwarf fortress is definitely one of those games whos learning curve dances with the y axis of a traditional Cartesian plane.
That said, at one point I did get a few forts to live 4-5 years, but usually at some point some random event happened and everyone died. :(

Indeed :D
Tho, more often then not its a failing of planning. I have had it happen to me lots of times. Alwasy some wierd thing I do. Sometimes you are just unlcuky tho.
I got a 10 year old fort now, and still going strong. Already a barony of my civilization, and I aiming for monarchy :).
Becoming self sufficient inside your fort, even with it seald up is key :D So making sure you got access to water, and some mushrooms and you are set. Baring any dwarves going insane and starting a tantrum spiral and it is all good. I have had 80 dwarves living sealed up for a 2 year long siege like this :D

Yeah, i generally get the whole self sufficient thing mostly good. The issue is somewhere between fell moods (wanting stupid stuff like bone or shells or hides).
Then, at some point i do something stupid like try to mine stuff, and find the caves, and something stupid like a single *little bitty monster* will tear my entire fortress apart

I have had my fair share of "accidents" as well. Demons for instance can't take a joke, and my miners like standing in magma pools for too long.
But I have not had a fell mood dwarf yet. I just engrave my enitre large dining hall to make em all have happy thoughts. And if I do get a dwarf going berserk, I sick my militia on him. Not much he can do against my war hammers :P.
Aslo, I always use metal amror now. Leather is totally useless I discoverd :D
But generally, I tend to wall off the lower caverns untiel I am good and prepared to enter them. And I am very careful of caverns were teh exit is open out to map edge. Things tend to wander in from out there...
But, sooner or later, **** happens, then all the dwarves die :D --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dwarfs!? isn't much more than what the demo gives you. Just a few game modes missing. The only thing it has in common with dwarf fortress is digging dwarfs.
Imo not worth the 8$ since it's just a glorified flash game. No offense to the developers but it has barely any content.
If you haven't played dwarf fortress yet because of the interface but want to try it, then I really suggest watching the "Lazy Newb Pack Tutorial" (It's kind of long though)
This is the link to the lazy newb pack page: Linkage Just click on "NEW: Feature Length Tutorial (2.5hr!)"

Dwarf Fortress is the best game EVAH. Seriously, if he made it multithreaded so I would not suffer FPS-death eventually, I'd easily pay...well...whatever he wanted Just get the Lazy Newb Pack and strike the earth !

meh the lazy noob pack is nice and all. dwarf therapist doesnt seem to be up to date with the latest version of DF, and its a ***** figuring out what immigrants can do without it, let alone actually managing the dwarf jobs.. esp hauling and crap

The Lazy Newb pack should be internally consistent, i.e. the Dwarf Therapist included in the package should be compatible with the DF version included. ----- Malevolence. is recruiting. Dive into the world of 0.0 !
