i read hammerhead and hobgoblins are the best but i also read the caldari/minmatar are best so i have conflicting information help please
also, what's up with amarr drones?

The Gallente drones deal the most damage and use thermal what is most of the time a average or low resist on NPCs.
Caldari/Minmatar drones track better and are quicker, what can be, if that they hit the lowest resist on a NPC, preferable for overall performance.
The Amarr drones are just bad(low speed, low damage, em damage).

Check out the drones dmg types vs your rats resists.
Amarr Drones do EM dmg so unless you fight sanshas or amarr forget them.
Gallente Drones are usually considered best because of they have the highest dps but are also the slowest.
Minmatar drones are the fastest and are considered the best for pvp as they can take out tacklers in fast orbit.
Caldari drones do good kin dmg (nice vs guristas) and are a bit faster than the gallente so some consider that a better mix in comparison.

use the banana drones.. they come out at you, peel themselves back, and fly into your assailants mouth, emulating wang sucktion... their male egos blister.. u win.. altho this only works in theory.

Changing drones also costs time and gets old quick, so hammers/hobs are almost universally loved.

A lot of the NPC frigates are weaker to thermal than to their "standard" faction resistance hole. An example being Angel Vipers/Webifiers.
I would use just Hobgoblin lights for killing frigates of any NPC faction.
If you need medium drones for killing cruisers, then I would go with thermal medium drones against EM or thermal weak NPCs, kinetic (or thermal) drones against kinetic weak, and explosive (or kinetic) against explosive weak factions.
